Dearemployees

ItwaswithamazementthatwesawtheTunisianpeopleuprise:Civilre-voltinaNorth-Africancountrywith-outIslamicparticipation.Nobodyhadexpectedthis.Neithertheworld’ssecretservices,northepoliticiansnorwe,eventhroughwearefamiliarwiththeregion.

Andthewaveoftheso-calledJasmineRevolutionholdsonviaEgypt,Yemen,andLibyatotheArabpeninsula,acceleratedandpromotedbyFacebookandTwitter.

Today,nobodyisabletosaywherethepathofhistorywilllead:Eithertoarealrevolutionwithgrowndemocraticstructuresortoahugeanarchy.

ManyofourGermanemployeesrememberthelegendaryfalloftheBerlinwall,theMondaydemonstra-tionsinLeipzigasasignalfromtheEast-Germanpeoplewhichledtotheendofthecommunistregimewithinaveryshorttime.Liketodayweallweresurprised.Peopletookmattersintotheirownhands;ourhistorytookanincredible,unhoped-forturn.

Moreimportantthanturnoverandprofitareandwereourlocalem-ployeesandtheirfamilies.Whenthemassesstartedmoving,Molotov-cocktailsflewovertheTahrirPlaceandthecivilwarinLibyastarted,wetookallmeasurestotakeourem-ployeesintoshelter.ForthispurposesweworkedcloselytogetherwiththelocalGermanembassies.

Ouremployees’safetyisstillourpriority,thusweareofferingabroadsupportandarecontinuouslystayingintouchwitheachofthesin-glebranchofficesintheneighbourcountriessuchasYemen.

WhateverwillhappenintheArabworldwetrulyhopethatourpart-nerswillemergeunharmedandstrengthened.Wewishthepeople

intheArabworldmorepersonalinfluenceinimportantdecisionsfortheirfutureandtheyouthareliableperspectivefortheirownlives.

WhatdoesthecurrentturnmeanfortheDorschGruppeandhowcanwebepreparedforchangesinthefuture?With80percentofourturnoverabroadandalion’sshareofitintheArabworldwecannotturnablindeyetothecurrenteventsthere.Libyaprojectsareputonhold;paymentsofEgyptcustomersarede-layed.WereckonthatwewillhaveaturbulentfirstquarterinacoupleofcountriesfortheDorschGruppe.

However,duetoourbroadrangeofservicesandourgreatnetworkofbranchofficesinmorethan40countries,thelosseswillremaininareasonableframe.

Thestrategytoextendournetworkintwoorthreecountriesperyearincombinationwithagrowingrangeofservicesisoneofthekeystonesofourriskprovisioningforfuturechanges.

OntheoccasionofthechangesweaskedourcolleaguesinEgyptfortheirpersonalopiniononthecurrentsituation.Theseopinionswillbepre-sentedinthepresentnewsletter.WewouldliketothankKeithBrookeandSamehMansourfortheirpersonalstatements.

Today,ourlandmarkprojectdescribesseveralsuccessfullycompletedprojects.Thearticleisaboutaprosperouslong-timeco-operationwiththecompanyRocheDiagnosticsGmbHinMannheim,Ger-many:alreadyinthe�990s’thearchi-tectureandstructuraldesigndivisionwasawardedthemasterplanningforallarchitectureandengineeringservicestobuildalogisticcentreandanextensionofitlater.

DIArchitectureinWiesbadenpar-ticipatesintheinternationalcom-petitionofAmericanarchitecturemagazineEVOLOcalled„SkyscraperCompetition20��“.

ThecontributionwasdraftedbyReinholdWeis(architecture),Dr.KlausIdda(structural),StephanEichler(mechanical)undJoachimErnst(CAD/3Dvisualization).Thefic-titiouslocationoftheobjectisCairo.

ThebuildingsculpturealignedinthedirectionoftheGizehpyramids,bowsvisuallytoEgypt‘shistoryandself-consciouslyopensthewayforthefutureofCairo,themegacitywithitsremarkableexterior“landmark”.

Thisbuildingofaheightof378misenvelopedbyadouble-layer,rearventilatedfaçadewithintegral,framelessphotovoltaicceramictiles,enablingthebuildingtogenerateitsownenergyandtoreleasesurplusenergy.

Itisdividedintotheunitsretail,of-fices,condo,serviceapartmentsandhotel,anditsgroundfloorhasanareaofapprox.�5.000m².

Bynow,Mr.Welzelhassucces-fullyfinishedhisinternshipandhasalreadystartedtoworkonhisbachelor’sthesisaboutenergydissipationbehindwasteweirs.

Theenergydissipationtakesplaceinstillingbasins.Still-ingbasinsareconcretedbasinswhichareattachedtowaterengineeringstructuresaswasteweirsorfreefluteweirs.

Theexcessivehydraulicenergyistoberelievedcontrolledinthestillingbasins.

Thethesis’targetistoanalysethisenergydissipationinaflowchannel,whichtakesplaceasahydraulicjump,bymeansofmodelexperiments.

Intheflowchannel,wasteweirswithvariouswaterdepthswillbemodelledfortheanalysesperformedinthethesis.

Asaresult,findingsaboutthelongitudeofthehydraulicjumps(distancetothefreeoverfall)areexpectedasabasisforageneralcalculationformula.Inconclu-sion,theresultsaretobecom-paredwiththelocalsituationofcurrentprojects(e.g.GabelwehrLindenau).

Thesubjectofthebachelor’sthesishasbeendecidedbecauseofeveryday’sprojectchallengesoftheBDCwatersection.There-fore,wearecoachingthethesistillitsdefence.

OnFebruary24th20��,MinisteroftheFederalMinistryforEconomicCooperationandDevelopment(BMZ)Mr.DirkNiebelvisitedtheProjectinManshietNasser,Cairo,whichaimsatconvertingthisinformaldistricttoaregularpartofthecityincludinginfrastructure.

DorschInternationalhasbeenwork-ingastheconsultantfortheCairoGovernorateinthedesignandcon-structionsupervisionofthisinformaldistrictsince�999.TheprojectisfinancedbytheMinistryforEco-nomicCooperationandDevelopmentviaKfW.

Thisprojectfocusesontheparticipa-toryapproachandinvolvementoftheresidentsduringtheimplementa-tion.

Ontheotherhand,theaverageEgyptianhasgainedamuchhighdegreeofselfrespectanditisheart-eningtoseethecommunitygroupsgoingouttocleanthepublicareasandimprovetheirsurroundings.

TheEgyptianshavegainedtherespectoftheWorld,wearenowwaitingtosee,withhope,thattheirpoliticalwishescanbeachievedandthesituationstabilized.Onethingthatiscertain,changehashappened.

Revolution in Egypt – Viewed from the Inside

AlthoughHosnyMubarakbecameincreasinglyunpopularoverthepastfewyears,anditisnowknownthathisregimehadmanydefects,hebroughtalevelofstabilitytothecountryatatimewhenitdesperatelyneededit.

30yearsago,afterthewarswithIsrael,Egyptwasinabadstate.Itsin-frastructurehadnotbeenupgradedfromthe�9�0’s,wasinpoorshapeandheavilyoverloadedwitharapidlyincreasingpopulation.Cairowasknownforthesewerageflowinginthestreetsandtrafficjams(althoughthetrafficjamsarestillthereduetoincreasingnumbersofcarsdespitethehugeinvestmentinroadsandmetro).Theinfrastructurehasim-provedimmenselyandtheeconomyhasdeveloped.

However,therehasbeenanincreas-ingdiscontentwiththeunfairpoliticalsystem,humanrightsabusesunderthe30yearoldemergencylawsandthefeelingthatthesystemwasnotrespondingtothepredominantwish-esofthepeopleforfasterchangeanddevelopment.Therewasalsoafeelingandknowledgethattheregimewasusingthesystemforprofiteering,al-thoughnotmanyknewoftheextentuntilaftertherevolutionandtheinvestigationsrevealedthedetails.

Thecountrynowfindsitself,afteraverysuccessfulandcivilizedrevolution,inastateofchangeanduncertainty.Themilitaryhaveemergedashonourableandproud,buttheyarestillaremnantoftheoldregime.

TraditionalfrictionsbetweenCoptsandMuslimsaresurfacing,althoughitmustbeemphasizedthatthetrou-blesthatarearisingarenottypical,themajorityMuslimsandChristiansworkandlivetogetherinharmonyandhaveamutualrespectforeachother’sreligions,themediaisalwaysabletohighlightthenegativesidesoflife.

Thereisalsoanincreaseincrimeandlawlessnessnowthatmanyhatedsecuritypolicehaveleftthestreets.Thearmyisdoingitsbesttofillthegapsbutarenotequippedforcivilcrimecontrolandhaveinsufficientpeopleforthis.

Today,DorschInternational/DorschConsultEgypthaveemergedfromthistransition/revolutionaryperiodasacompetentengineer’sofficeabletohelpthecommunityandintroduceexcellentengineeringinasuccessfulcooperationwithallparticipatingparties.

ThemaininvestorsinEgyptarenowourpartners.WeformpartofconsortiumswithkeyinvestorstosupporttheirengineeringeffortsinmainBOTprojectsinroads,waterandwastewaterprojects.Wearealsomemberofaconsortiumthatisapplyingforamajorbarrageproject

andmasterplanprojectfortheRiverNile.Inaddition,DorschInternationalisprovidingconstructionsupervisiontoJabalAlAsfarWWTP,whichiscur-rentlyconsideredoneofthelargestconstructionprojectsinEgypt.

AsDorschConsultEgyptisoneoftheyoungestcompaniesintheDorschfamily,andasitiscelebratingitsfirstanniversarythismonth,wecanmonitorthedevelopmentofthisengineeringcompany.Itstartedwithoneengineerandonemanagerand,afterayear,thefamilynowconsistsofsixteenmembers(engineeringandsupportingstaff).

Egyptisdemandinginfrastructureprojectstosupporttheincreasingpo-pulationandrequireddevelopment.InDorschwearepreparedtotakepartinthatdevelopmentprocess.

Weconsiderourselvesacapableengineer’sofficetoparticipateintheawaitedprojectssuchaswaterrelatedprojectsandmoregeneralin-frastructureprojects.Werelyonourengineeringin-housecapacity,ourexpatriatesfromallovertheworld,ourvisitingexpertsfromGermany,andourrichdatabase.

ThewholeArabregionhasexperi-encedfreedominsuchanunexpect-edmannerandpace.TunisandEgyptwereluckierthanotherstoavoidextremeviolence.Therevolutionandassociatedchangesarefarfromoverbutthedirectionsarepointingtooptimism.

Delaysinprojectsandcontractsareadirectresultoftherevolutionarycli-matebutaftertherestructuring,weallwishtoseesteadyandstableeco-nomicaldevelopmentmainlythroughinfrastructureanddevelopmentprojectsthatwouldfulfilthehopesofmorethan300millionpeoplewhohavewaitedforlongdecadestoseeabetterfuture.

Keyelementsinenergysavingareanairconditionwithheatrecovery,low-eringthethermalenergydemandtoaminimum,andanautomatictechnicalequipmentofthebuilding,control-lingtherooms’atmosphereandthusalsosavingenergy.Becausethecoresofthebuilding(twomainstaircases)arelocatedintheSouth,overheatinginthesummerisprevented.

InMarch20�0RocheDiagnosticsGmbHcelebratedtheinaugurationofthenewofficebuildingatSandhoferStrasseinMannheiminGermany.Thissevenstoreybuilding,plannedaccord-ingtothelatestlowenergystandards,providesspacefor500modernwork-ingplaces.Theconstructiontookoneandahalfyearsandcost3�millionEuros.ThearchitecturedepartmentinWiesbadenwasassignedthemasterplanning.

TheservicesforthisprojectincludedtheHOAIphases:preliminarydesign,designforplanningapproval,finaldesign,preparationandcollaborationintendering,objectsupervisionanddocumentationforbuilding,structuralframeworkaswellastechnicalequip-ment.

Projectmanagementservicesincludedthespecialistcoordinationofexpertsinlandscaping,trafficplanning,ther-malbuildingphysics,noiseprotection,roomacousticsandsurveyingandalignmentservices.

Anothermainfocusoftheprojectwastheaspectoftimemanagement,

thus,inordertoaccomplishthetaskinanextremelyshortperiodoftime,aclosecooperationofallpartiesinWiesbadenandattheconstructionsitewasindispensable.Thisprojectrequiredmostadvancedknowhowofallpartiesinvolvedinplanningandconstruction.

Itsresultisabarrier-freeofficebuild-ingwhoseexteriordesignisdomi-natedbyaglassfrontmadeofbroadscreenswithupstreamsunscreens.Thisdesignconveysopennessandtransparencyandthussupportstheemployee’steamworkandexchangeandquickensdecisions.

Thisrectangularcubewithfullglassfrontisstructuredhorizontallybywin-dowlinesandhigh-qualityaluminiumsunscreensandbalconiesformainte-nance.

Theinsideisstructuredbyandacces-sibleviatwomainstaircases.Beyondtheentrance,thetransparencyiscontinuedinthecreationofaflexibleandinnovativeworkingenvironment.85percentofits�2,500squaremetersaredesignedasopenspacesandap-proximately�5percentarestructuredincells.

Ahighvoltagepowerplantsuppliedbytwo��00kVatransformersistoproducetheenergy.Afactory-owned20kVgridsuppliesthetwotransform-ers.Thelowvoltagesystemscomprisetelecommunication,buildingauto-mation,computernetworkandfirealarmsystem.

Atthis,thestockisplacedonlanesofhighstorageracks(40mhighand70mlong;air-conditioned,onanareaofaround�95,000m³grossvolume)whereastheconsignmentofthephar-maceuticalstakesplaceinapproxi-mately200,000m³grossvolume.

Rochehasinvestedsome95millionEurosfortheadditiontocapacityandgaininefficiency.RocheDiagnosticshastraditionallyappreciatedfunction-alitywhenitcomestoitsproductionplantsbutalsoarchitectureandcolour/paint.

DorschInternationalhasbeenas-signedthetasktoconsulttherepairandmaintenanceworksandtheenduringimprovementofthepublicdrinkingwatersupply,sewagesystemandwastedisposalinZimbabwebytheGermanAssociationforInterna-tionalCooperation(GIZ).

TheAssociation’shelpinneedaimsatminimizingwater-inducedillnessessuchasCholerabyensuringasecureandcontinuousdrinkingwater

oftheregion,iscontaminatedbydischargeofuntreatedwastewaterwhichcontainsfaecesandthereforerepresentsasignificanthealthrisktothepopulation.Currently,onlyabout80%ofthepopulationareconnectedtothemunicipalwatersupplysystemandabout50%areconnectedtotheseweragesystem.

Atthesametime,waterdemandisfartoohighduetoimmensewaterlosses(upto50%),illegalconnectionsandfrequentwasteofwater.

TheworksincludetheconstructionofapublicwatersupplynetworkforTunijce,andtheconnectionofKara-novactotheseweragesystem.IntheregionCaire,thesupplysituationwillalsobeoptimizedbymeasuresforthereductionoftechnicalwaterlosses.Constructioncostsareexpectedtoreachabout€��million.

ThereliabilityandsustainabilityofthewatersupplyandsewerageservicesinBanjaLukawillbeincreasedbythisproject.Thisincreasesthepub-lichealthandisthereforeamajorcontributiontotheimprovementofthelivingconditionsofabout230,000inhabitants–whichinturnpositivelyaffectstheeconomicgrowthoftheregion.

Thefirstphasefortheconstructionofthechannelontheprivatesitehasalreadybeenconcluded.Thesecondphaseofconstructioncanonlybeexecutedinexactcoordinationwiththeotherconstructionworks,asthechannelconstructionimplicatesacomplextunnellingmethod.

Thereplacementoftheexistingprestressedconcretebridge(depthdeckapprox.�.85m)builtin�959/�0isabsolutelynecessarybecauseofthecontinuousdegradationofthestructuralcondition(grade4.0).Dam-agesatthebaseplatesandtheboxgirders’floorslabs(exposedandcor-rodedreinforcement)inthemiddlebearingcanbefoundoverthewholewidthofthebridge.Inadamagesurveyreportithasalsobeenfoundthattheexistingshearcoverageatthecentrepierdoesnotsuffice.

Theprestressedreinforcementwascorrodedattheexaminedspots,thisiswhytherecanbenocertaintyaboutthebearingcapacityandthedurabilityofthestressedsteelreinforcement.

Accordingtotheplans,thelightsignalsystemhastobemovedtowardsNiddastraßeandthecurveprogressionattheintersectionhastobeadapted.TheseplanningservicesaswellasthecoordinationwiththeadministrativeofficesinchargehavebeenassignedtoDITransportandInfrastructure.

Thedesignofthenewbridgelooksslimandmodern,stretchingfarabovethecourseoftheriver,andthusreducingtheinterferenceinnatureatthewater’sedgetoaminimum.

Duetolocalconditionsthisstructureistobereplacedbythenewbridgeatalmostthesamelocation.Thus,theconstructiontimeconditionshadtobesurveyedinordertoenablethecontinuityoftrafficonthefederalhighwayB�85duringtheconstruc-tionperiod.

Mr.Schleusener’smajortasksinthishonoraryfunctionwillcom-prise–alongsidetheworkfortheVBI’sYoungProfessionals’federalboardofmanagement–thepreparationofaYPmeetingduringtheEFCAcongress(Euro-peanAssociationofConsultingEngineers)inBerlininMay20��aswellasthecooperationwiththeVBI’sworkinggroupPublicRelations.Thisworkinggroup,comprisingmembersandrepre-sentativesofVBIaswellastheagencyKircherBurkhardtfromBerlin,iscurrentlyworkingongivingtheassociationarede-signedappearance.Theresultswillbepresentedtothemem-bersduringthisyear’scongressinNuremberginOctober.

ThisyearMr.Schleusener,along-sidehisfunctionattheYoungProfessionals,hasbecomeapersonalmemberoftheVBIandwillfromnowonrepresentDorschGruppeattheVBI’sTransportCommittee.

Accordingtothetown’sobjective,atthebeginningof20��thepreliminarydesignwillbethebasisofthecon-tinuingplanninginordertobeabletosubmitalldocumentsforofficialplanningapprovalinthecourseofthisyear.

Atthis,BDCwasresponsibleforthetransportplanningpartofthecontest.

WiththesubmittedapplicationwewererankedthirdbytheprizecommitteeofthefederalcapitalKiel.

Inadditiontothecontestsubmittal,BDCiscurrentlyplanningtherecon-structionofthebusstationBerlin-MarzahnincludingtwobusstopsontheMarzahnPromenade.

ThebusstationissituatedintheformerEastBerlindevelopmentareaMarzahnasacentraltrafficjunction.

Inthesurroundingsofthestation,whichmanagesfourlinesoftheBerlinerVerkehrsgesellschaftBVG(PublicTransportAuthorityofBerlin),therearealsoanS-Bahnstation(sub-urbantrainline)andthreetramlines.

Afterthecompletionofthedesign,BDCBerlinwillalsoperformthelocalconstructionsupervision.

AllserviceswillberenderedinclosecooperationwiththeairportsdivisionofDorschInternational.

Withoperationsstartingin�974toaccommodatethepopularityofairtravelinthe�970s,BruneiInterna-tionalAirporthasundergoneseveralmajorfaceliftssinceitsopening.

Theairportwasupgradedinthemid�980sandin2000tohandletheincreasingnumbersofpassengersandcargo.
