2. SUMMARY

Innovation and creativity are two words frequently heard in research environment today. How can we encourage innovation and creativity in ourselves and our PhD students? Often the components of the innovation have been described as fun, creative, diverse, collaborative, and intuitive. Taking small steps to accomplish this goal is the way to go, but there needs to be support and encouragement. The innovation training was dived in three sessions: Unlocking Creativity, Innovation, Creativity & Entrepreneurship Challenge and Storytelling- Panel discussion with successful start-ups CEOs. The training was designed to nurture and develop the participant’s creative confidence and, enable them to practice creativity in a fun, safe & collaborative environment. It also focused on fostering entrepreneurial mind-set using collaborative problem-solving game tools. The training had the strong practical, teamwork and interactive aspects. As part of the Innovation, Creativity & Entrepreneurship Challenge, the participants learned how to use the Design Thinking human-centred approach to innovation. The exercise focused on reimagining an everyday object. The objective was to gain insights from discovery and empathy, define a problem-to-be-solved for the everyday object, create multiple solutions, make a rough-and-ready prototype and pitch the idea to the fellow teams. The panel session hosted two extraordinary speakers: Paddy Finn from Electricity Exchange, a leading figure at the forefront of Demand Side strategy in Ireland and James Ives – CEO Xocean, a successful Irish start-up who develops an innovative Autonomous Surface Vessel for the collection of ocean data. Being both the successful entrepreneurs, their paths have been entirely different. The participants had a chance to learn about two start-up showcases, compare the stories, challenges they faced, mistakes they made and goals they achieved. The Fireside Chat made this session dynamic and interactive. The training was given by Fergal Brophy, an entrepreneurial specialist at University College Dublin Innovation Academy. Fergal has extensive experience in facilitating and mentoring innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship for large Corporates, small to medium-sized firms (SMEs), postdocs and Undergraduates.
