Porous Pavement • Historically predominant use• Benefits well documented

• Stormwater BMP• detention• retention• treatment

• Parking lots – “most bang for buck”

• 2013 Study• Masters of Construction Capstone Project

• Stacy Turner, P.E., USACE • NPCPA Participation

• Supplementary Research 2013-2014• Michael Hein, P.E., Professor

“I am doing a research project on Innovative Uses of Pervious

Concrete. Does anyone have any examples?”

Literature Review/Methodology

• 90% of material was found through internet sources

• Main difficulty – differentiating innovative uses

1. “pervious concrete”: 1550 results.

2. “porous concrete” -“pervious concrete”: 4090 results

3. “no fines concrete” -“porous concrete” -“pervious concrete”: 464 results

Greenhouse Floors

• Eliminate ponding water• Control weed growth• Solid surface for equipment

transport• Heat storage & exchanger for

plants• Must vacuum to prevent

clogging from soils and nursery materials

Reasons:1. Community Relations Tool2. Volunteer friendly – children, seniors3. Supply Parks Dept. with plants

Concerns:1. Clogging with soils & nursery materials2. Severe freeze/thaw winters.3. Prevent moss from growing in the moist environment & creating "slippery” working surface.

Solutions:1. Being careful to NOT drop soils2. Vacuum often (its working)3. So far no moss or other organic growth

Precast pervious concrete slabs• Better material quality control• More uniform dimensions• More uniform density and infiltration• Faster Installation• Easier replacement• Requires super

level subbase

Retaining Walls• No-fines concrete backfill• Set concrete exerts no

pressure on wall block• Minimal settlement behind

wall• PC attaches to block &

extends wall mass• Excellent drainage reduces

lateral hydrostatic pressure • Taller walls with less

excavation• Higher production rates
