The Conestoga September Color Tour was actually October 1.There were 6 Studebakers and one brand X that met for the tour atThe Fort Restaurant. We headed towards Evergreen up Highway 74then over to Squaw Pass road. The colors were beautiful along theway. Once we arrived in Frisco it was not difficult to locate Tom andBeverly Wheeler’s home with his 1917 parked in the driveway. Withthe rest of the cars lined up, made for a really nice show ofStudebakers. A 1917, a 1957 President Classic, a 1958 PackardHawk, 1958 Golden Hawk, 1960 Lark, 1961 Lark, and a 1961 TrickHawk. There were several people that drove by and just stopped inthe middle of the street and got out to see the cars. Thephotographer from the local paper showed up and took some photos. The BBQ provided by Tom and Beverly was delicious, of course, allthe food was great. As I was the only officer to attend, there was nomeeting. On the way back to Denver there were some that took thejourney back to see the colors again. Others meet in Golden topartake in the Cruise. A perfect day for a drive in the Stude.
The official October meeting was the 30th at Aspen AviationCentennial Airport, hosted by Larry Ramsdell. There were 25members with 8 Studes on display on the tarmac. As always the foodwas delicious. The airplane ride was fantastic. Peggy Dietz was firstin line for the flight. Trish Price second and Joe Rink followed byRoger Zaner and then Lynn Metz. Just a beautiful October day for anairplane ride and Studebaker Show. The airplane was an CitabriaFabric Covered taildragger. A great plane. Thank you Larry formaking advanced arrangements with the pilot

Western Wheels
October 8th and 9th was the 25th anniversary of the MonumentMall in Scottsbluff where Western Wheels Studebaker Drivers Clubwere invited to display our Studebakers. There were 11 vehiclesdisplayed ranging from 1947 to a 1984 Avanti. It was good to beinside as it rained all day Saturday—much needed moisture butprobably affected attendance somewhat. All in all it was a goodshow. Thanks to all the members who participated and also for thehospitality of mall management.
The November 12th meeting will be held at the WhistleStopRestaurant in Scottsbluff. The program will be a PowerPointpresentation by Stu Tritt of some of the professional Studie people atthe 2010 meet in Arizona. December 3rd, Christmas meeting will behosted by Steinwart’s at their home. January plans are to meet atPrime Cut in Scottsbluff. More info on this next time.

Several classic Studebakers were line up on
Frisco Street in front of Tom and Bev Wheeler’s
home in Frisco Saturday. The cars and owners
are part of the Conestoga Chapter of the
Studebaker Club from Denver and the Front
Range. Most of the cars were from the late
‘50s and early ‘60s with the oldest being an all-
original from 1917.

Hello Conestoga Chapter Members, Pikes Peak Chapter Members, Western Wheels Chapter Members, and newchapter members, and yes, men also. I have been editor for Western Outlook over 10 years. I have enjoyed it, but
I’m burnt out!! My enthusiasm is going down the tubes!
I feel very strong that it is time for me to “PASS THE BATON.”
My last Western Outlook Newsletter will be March 2012.
E-mail is important because at least 25 percent of Western Outlook Newsletters are sent via e-mail to the threeSDC Chapters (e-mail addresses can be set up and put into special folders so you don’t have to type these e-mailaddresses each month, just the folder name), and the hard copy masters are sent to Stuart Tritt via U.S. Mail for
publishing/mailing. I will be glad to help in the transition period to help get you on board.
We could even do this in stages.
Most Important THE CURRENT WESTERN OUTLOOK NEWSLETTER FORMAT DOES NOT NEED TOSTAY THE SAME. YOUR OWN NEWSLETTER FORMAT DOES NOT NEED TO STAY 5 PAGES BACK
TO-BACK. I EXCHANGE WITH OTHER EDITORS AND MANY OF THEM ARE ONLY TWO PAGESAND MANY, MANY DO NOT HAVE PICTURES. YOU ARE OPEN TO CREATE YOUR OWN STYLE.

Conestoga Color Tour, by Carey Dietz
I loaded up the Packard Hawk & headed south to meet up with the Conestoga Chapter of the SDC.
After gassing up & a 40 minute drive, I arrived at The Ft. Restaurant in Morrison. I met up with 5
Studes & 1 Brand X. The Studebakers: Zaner’s ‘57 President, Sander’s ’61 Lark, Welle’s ’60 Lark
Convertible, Doerschlag’s ’58 Golden Hawk, & Petros’ ’61 “Trick Hawk.” We left The Fort & headed into
Morrison where we picked up the winding Bear Creek Rd. We traveled through the sleepy little
mountain towns of Idledale & Kittredge. Once we got to Evergreen, we found Squaw Pass Rd. This is
where we started to see the leaves changing along with the altitude! We stopped a couple of times for
photos. Of course, each time we were bombarded with questions from sightseers. After climbing to an
elevation above 11,000 ft., we descended into Idaho Springs where we got onto I-70. If anyone was
still sleeping, Steve woke them up when he opened the throttle on his Golden Hawk! Once we all caught
up to Steve, we continued up toward the 11,158 ft. at the Eisenhower Tunnel. After my car made it
through the tunnel for the first time in its life, we ended up in Frisco at the Wheeler’s for lunch.
Wheeler’s house was easy to find with their 1917 Studebaker parked out front! As we were getting
parked, a photographer from the local paper showed up & started shooting! Tom & Bev made some
great ribs while everyone else brought side dishes & desserts. After we gorged ourselves, Zaners, Ray
Petros & I headed for the Golden Super Cruise. After we drove through a couple of times, I headed
for home. 200 miles, one tank of gas, tons of thumbs up, & great BBQ! Priceless!
Cool fact from the Colorado Department of Transportation:
“The Eisenhower Memorial Tunnel” is located approximately sixty miles west of Denver, Colorado on I-
70. It is the highest vehicular tunnel in the world, located at an elevation of 11,013 feet at the East
Portal & 11,158 feet at the West Portal. The Tunnel traverses through the Continental Divide at an
average elevation of 11,112 ft. The facility lies entirely within the Arapaho National Forest & is
divided by two counties, Clear Creek County at the East portal & Summit county at the West portal.”
The Studebakers that made the trip:
Zaner’s ’57 President. Basically all original 4 door, 289, Flightomatic, interior looks to be Packard
pattern. Sander’s ’61 Lark. Jade Green, 259, 3-speed OD, no special features but all-original! Welle’s
’60 Lark VIII Convertible. Very nicely restored. Doerschlag’s ’58 Golden Hawk. California car,
restored in 1999, rust free, original single tone, Avanti pistons w/ R-2 cam. Otherwise, all stock
original. Petros’ ’61 Hawk. “Trick Hawk” Buick Grand National V6 Turbo, Corvette suspension, GM 4
Speed Auto Transmission, Ford Rear End, Disc Brakes, modern AC, electric windows and outside
mirrors, power seats, all black including bumpers, grill and trim, red interior. Dietz’s Packard Hawk,
painted in 2001, Vintage Air, 40,250 miles, missing a few things, but fairly original. Wheeler’s ’17. 7-
passenger 4 door Touring. 236, 4 cylinder, 3 speed with electric start! Very low miles!!! This car
looks like it came out of a time capsule! and, Joann Beldt & Maxine Beldt in Brand X.
