RemovingPartsfromtheRosettaUnit.UsingthestandardPilotAwareRosettayouneedtoremovethetwoblackantennasconnectedtothegoldSMAconnectorsandtheGPSPCBdongleattachedtotheUSBsocket.TheGPSdongleislocatedundertheslideoffpanelattheendoftheRosettaunitandistheonethatdoesnothaveapigtailconnectedtoit.These3itemsarenotused in the installation so canbe set aside. (note thewill nothavebeen suppliedwithaRosetta+installationkitcombination).TheRosetta,orClassicunitshouldbeinstalledsomewhereconvenientintheaircraftandwhichhasaccessto5.2V,1.2Apowerusingthestandard1meterlead,theremoteantennas,theremoteGPSandcableaccesstotheintercomorheadsetsifrequired.(Thiscableisnotsuppliesascablelengthswillvary.AmazonBasicsareaverygoodinexpensivesupplier.)LocationoftheRosettaorClassicunitcanbebehindthepanel,undertheseatoranywheresuitable.Itwillbeattachedusingthetiewrapsprovidedorbyanyotherpreferablemeans.Thereisa¼inchscrewthreadintheRosettacaseifthisisusefulforsecuringtheunit,butdonotscrewintootightlyortoodeep.(i)InstallingtheGPSantenna.Firstly,theGPSantennashouldbelocatedsothatithasafullviewofthesatellitesinmediumearthorbit.Thisisusuallyonthedashboard.ItcanbeinotherlocationsbutbeawarethattheGPSsignalswillbeattenuated(weakened) by metal, water (human bodies) or carbon fibre. The GPS supplied is not weather proof andthereforeunsuitableforexternalmountingiftheaircraftisexpectedtogetwet.FindasuitablelocationanddrillorcutaslotfortheGPScableUSBconnectortopassthroughthedashboardforonwardscabledressingtowheretheRosettaunitistobemounted.3metresofcableissuppliedwiththeremoteGPSforthistobeaccomplished.(ii)InstallingtheRadioAntennas.Bothantennasareinstalledinasimilarway.ThelongerantennaisthePilotAwareP3i869.5MHzantennaandtheshorteroneisthe1090MHzADSBModeC/Santenna.TheantennasareMonopoleAntennasandthereforeneedagroundplanetoworkproperly.Metalaircraftwillprovidethisgroundplane.NoneMetalaircraftwillrequirealocalgroundplanesimilartothatusedforyourtransponderandorpermanentairbandradio.Thelocalgroundplaneifrequired,shouldbethinaluminiumorthincopper,aslargeaspossiblebutasaminimum25-30cmsquare.Drilla12mmholethroughtheouterskinofthefuselageandthegroundplane,iffitted.Astepdrillisveryusefulfor this. It may be desirable to use the thin stainless steel penny washers provided to spread the load,particularlyonplasticorfabricsurfaces.Itisimportantthatthereiselectricalconnectivitybetweentheantennacaseandtheaircraft/groundplane.TightenupthenutandapplyLoctiteasrequired.Alittlepetroleumjellywillprovideweatherproofing.Dothesameforthesecondantenna.Positioningoftheantennawillbedifferentfromaircrafttypetoaircrafttypeand issubject toavoidingthemassof theengineor thewater in thebodiesof theoccupants toavoidattenuation. (iii)ConnectingthePowerSupply.ItismostimportantthatthepowercablesuppliedwiththeClassicorRosettaUnitisusedintheinstallation.Avoidrunslongerthan1metrebetweentheRosettaunitandtheAnkerpowersupply.IncludedintheinstallationkitisanAnkerCigarettelighterchargerwhichhasbeenshowntoprovideanexcellentinexpensivenoise freeUSBsupply forPilotAware.ACigarette lightersocket isalsoprovided.This shouldbecabledtotheswitched12Vsupply(NOT24V)ofyouraircraftviaasuitablefuseorcircuitbreaker.PilotAwarewilldrawamaxof2.1ampsat5.2VfromtheANKERchargerwhichtranslatesto lessthan1Afromthe12Vsupply.A1-2Afusewillsuffice.Cableandfusesarenotsuppliedasthiswillbebespoketotheinstallationandtypeofaircraftinwhichitisfitted.Itisrecommendedthatlowsmokeandfumecableisused20AWG.TheAnkerChargerwillbeatightfitinthecigarettelightersocket.Acabletiecanbeusedforgreatersecurity.Theassemblyshouldbecabletiedinasuitablelocation,securelybutnottootight.Withthisinstallation,thePilotAwarewillbootupwhenthemasterswitchisoperated.ENSURETHATTHEREISELECTRICALFIDELITYANDTHATALLCONTACTSAREINSULATED.Ifyoudonotfeelconfidenttodothisyourselfgetaqualifiedengineertodothisforyou.Alternatively,youcoulduseaCharge2Charge4EASAapprovedUSBpowersupply.Thelatterbeingsuitablefor24V,aswellas12Vsystems.
