Interlocking History With ModernityJan Achilles Miller

Learning to integrate new architecture into a historical context is a very complicated challenge. This challenge is only heightened, when an architect is faced with integrating their work with a historically significant piece of architecture, such as a portico designed by Brunelleschi. Preserving the original intent of the design, while attempting to incorporate modern aesethics and notions, often bring about many conflicts that require imaginative solutions. By preserving the building’s original design, in this case the town’s library, and inserting a modern addition to the building, a new experience was incorporated into the town of Lastra A SIgna. This sliver of modernity in the center of the town was intended to attract locals, as well as visitors, while encouraging a sense of pride and community within Lastra A Signa. Through the interlocking of the new and historical, a new kind of excitement, learning and interaction can occur within the town helping to restore the town to the thriving character that it was during the Italian Renaissance.
