Emerging Teaching Methods

Activating Prior KnowledgeK-W-L Chart – What do you

know about Investigatory Method?

What do you want to learn about this method?

Emerging Teaching Methods• This teaching methods are found equally

effective with the usual methods of teaching• It became doubly recognize because of the

advent so called “Era of Educational Technology”• Teaching methods not popular as

Discussion, Lecture, Reporting, and etc.

Emerging Teaching Methods involves:

1.) Laboratory Method2.) Self – Pacing Method

Filipino students are passive

They are not simply given a

chance to participate in a

class

They are inherently reserved

individuals

-attributed to their external premises

-teachers lack of confidence to share ideas

- teacher monopolize learning process

It is something about the students

Investigatory Method:Definition

Investigatory Method

Provides a lot of opportunities for the

student to participate in classroom activity

Focuses greatly on learner’s

active involvement

Experiments in investigation

uses Scientific Method

De-emphasizes the teachers authoritative role

in the classroom

Techniques of Investigatory

Method

Laboratory Technique

Problem – Solving Technique

Research Technique

Experimenting Technique

Field – Study Technique

A. Laboratory TechniqueStudents actively

manipulates and study a given upon which a given problem lies

Types of Laboratory Technique

1.) Laboratory Exercise2.) Laboratory Investigation

1.) Laboratory ExerciseDesigned to help

students to acquire fundamental knowledge

and skills

Example:Speech Exercises

commonly done in the Speech Laboratory.

2.) Laboratory Investigation

Deeper and more serious undertaking that requires careful planning

Example:A college student may

involve himself in a co relational study whether leadership skills and academic performance are directly related

Steps of Laboratory Technique1. ) Pre Laboratory – preparation, reminders and familiarization2.) Activity Proper – actual laboratory work is done by the students3.) Post – Laboratory discussion – answering of questions, giving of actual observation, analysis and comparison of data, discussion of the application

Teachers’ Role during the Laboratory work1. He allows students to learn for themselves by solving the problems they encounter in their work.2. After purposes have been defined and procedures outlined, the place of the teacher is in the background.3. He may move from group to group, giving encouragement, clarifying procedures, straightening out facts, and stimulating fast – working students to undertake new problems.4. He should try to avoid interrupting the work of his class with announcements.

B. Problem – Solving Technique

Requires a learner to work actively in the solution of a difficulty or an undesirable situation.

Steps in Problem-Solving Technique1. Identifying and Defining the problem2. Formulating a hypothesis3. Verification4. Collection and organization of

data5. Generalization6. Application

C. Research TechniqueIt is a careful and an

organized study designed to serve a specific purpose.

Types of Research Activities1. Interviewing a chosen subject2. Making a simple survey3. Constructing the historical episode of an individual, a community or an institution4. doing a simple experiment

Steps in doing a Research1. Preparing for the research work2. Collecting and Gathering data3. Organizing the data obtained4. Analyzing and interpreting the data organizedMaking formal report of the research done

D. Field Study TechniqueStudents investigates

a given situation by being a part or an integral component of it.

Steps of Field Study Technique1. Preparation2. Actual Investigation3. Making a formal report4. Class Reporting

E. Experimenting Technique

It is methodical trial and error procedure carried out with the goal of verifying, falsifying, or establishing the validity of a hypothesis. Experiments provide insight into cause-and-effect by demonstrating what outcome occurs when a particular factor is manipulated.

Steps in Experimenting Technique1. Designing an experiment2. Preparing for an experiment3. Conducting the experiment4. Obtaining the results of the experiment

“If the child is not learning the way you are teaching, then you must teach in the way the child learns.”
