Chosen City

After growing attached to a few cities like Argia and Baucis, I felt I need to focus on groups of cities I hadn’t spent that much time on. That was when Esmeralda became a foreground city in my mind. Numerous cities had a connection to water in their descriptions, as cities based around and exaggerated features from Venice in Italy, but Esmeralda had based its’ whole system on society on the change of water.

My main inspiration for the design of most of the cities stemmed from the concept art of Alan Lee from The Lord of the Rings (2001-2003), of his depictions of several locations from the films of Gondor and Rivendell, which have a Mediterranean visual semblance, of cities or structures built in the Middle Ages, but kept at the height of evolution.

I wanted to age them, base every city slightly apart from contemporary influences, to give each city the feel that they are based on realistic influence but developed in their own unique way. For Esmeralda, I found myself drawn to the style of the Water Tribes in the children’s cartoon series Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005-2008), where the colour palette of bright blue jumped out, rather than the usually subtle colour of water. It took the form of Expressionism, with sharp contrasting shadows, there to represent Esmeralda’s darker side. In terms of composition, I explored using different types of balance: symmetry and then an offset angle, just to try and convey in a few of the thumbnails a slightly un-nerving feeling, but still a sense of whimsicality of city that is derived from the colour palette and the setting.
