Q&A With DYSTROPOLIS

CC: Tell us A little bit about yourself? CC: How did you first realize that you wanted D: Born and Raised in Hong Kong, to be a designer? China, I have come to realize that my D: I seemed to have stumbled upon it. In my 4th year artistic medium is fashion. Once I of engineering school, I designed my very first piece found this perfect medium, everything to wear to my graduation since absolutely nothing in else came naturally. Fashion is a per- stores caught my eyes. In hindsight, I should have fect contradiction for an engineer such realized my passion for designing at a young age as I as myself and this is shown in my desi- always did fashion sketches back then. It is never too gns. late to become who you want to be. I took four years off from engineering work and enrolled in fashion My Brand , DYSTROPOLIS , is a look school. Here I am, and engineer by day, a fashion into the future- dystopian metropolis. designer by night. Nothing is impossible! DYSTROPOLIS is not post- apocalyptic; rather, think Brave New World, We, Nineteen Eighty-four and the likes. It is sophisticated in future tense with an und- ercurrent of chaos; it is Futursophistication. It is contemporary tailored clothing that com- pliments the body with a play on line and structures whilst electrified by sparks of dark- ness. It is an endless exploration in self expres- sion.

CC:What inspires you? CC: Can you give us any fashion tips? D: “ Fashion is not something that exists D: “ In order to be irreplaceable one must in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the always be different” - Coco Chanel street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” - Coco Chanel Be different, be yourself and feel great in whatever you choose to wear!! Inspiration comes from everything around me. from nature, architecture, people, music, movies to world events. As an example, take my last collection “Apocalypse of Black Venom” presented at [ FAT ]. It is an imaginary tale of wildlife surviving the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. I felt deeply sadd- ened by the tragedy, selfishness and carelessness that humans possess, and felt the need to express it in fas- hion.

CC: What are your hopes and goals for the near future and future? D: My hope is to be able to communicate my ideas to peo- ple through fashion. My immediate goal is to present an unforgettable show with DYSTROPOLIS my next collection “Pandora’s Pithos” at [ FAT ] Arts and www.dystropolis.com Fashion Week 2012. This collection stems from a chain of www.facebook.com/Dystropolis.by.wendy.ng?sk=wall personal events. It eventually evolves to become a comment- ary on the darker side of Humanity, where hope is a prisoner.
