Psalm 23:1-6

Introduction

• Song followed a tragedy–H.G. lost four children in a shipwreck,

only his wife survived

–Telegraphed him with the news

• Need for scriptural songs–Spiritual songs (Ephesians 5:19)

–Edifying (Colossians 3:16)

1.When peace like a river attendeth my way,When sorrows like sea billows roll;Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say,"It is well, it is well with my soul."

In Both Peace and Sorrow (v. 1)

• Source of peace–God through Christ (Romans 5:1)

–Passes all understanding (Philippians 4:7)

–Need to praise God (Psalm 29:1, 2, 11)

• Is it well in sorrow also?–Not as easy

–God is our helper (Hebrews 13:6; 1 Peter 5:7)

• Bible examples–Joseph (Genesis 50:20)

–Job (Job 19:25, 26)

–David (Psalm 23:4)

–Three Hebrews (Daniel 3:16-18)

–Apostles (Acts 5:41)

–Paul and Silas (Acts 16:25)

• Same for us today–Trying of our faith (James 1:2, 11)

• Can we say, “It is well with my soul?”

2.Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,Let this blest assurance control,That Christ hath regarded my helpless estate,And hath shed His own blood for my soul.

Though Satan Would Buffet (v. 2)

• Satan is real–Desired Peter (Luke 22:31, 32)

–Desires us as well (1 Peter 5:8)

• Christ’s regard for us–A way of escape (1 Corinthians 10:13)

–Need to resist (James 4:7)

–Died for us (Matthew 26:28)

• Intercedes for the saints–One intercessor (Hebrews 7:25)

–Faithful High Priest (Hebrews 2:17, 18)

–Our advocate (1 John 2:1, 2)

• And so, “It is well with my soul”

3.My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thoughtMy sin, not in part but the whole,Is nailed to the cross and I bear it no more:Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

My Sins Are Forgiven (v. 3)

• Can’t cover them up –Must forsake them (Proverbs 28:13)

–Separates us from God (Isaiah 59:1, 2)

–Disgraces us (Proverbs 14:34)

–Brings death (Romans 6:23)

• Died for my sins–Suffered for me (Isaiah 53:4-6)

–Died for sinners (Romans 5:6-9)

–Need to obey (Hebrews 5:9)

• Only then can we say, “It is well with my soul”

4.And, Lord, haste the day when the faith shall be sight,The clouds be rolled back as a scroll,The trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend,"Even so" it is well with my soul.

When Christ Returns (v. 4)

• Only true for faithful Christians–No hope outside of Christ

(Ephesians 2:12)

–No anchor for the soul (Hebrews 6:19)

When Christ Returns (v. 4)

• Love His appearing–Paul did (2 Timothy 4:6-8)

–Abide in Him (1 John 2:28)

–“Even so come, Lord Jesus” (Revelation 22:20)

• Will we say, “It is well with my soul?”

Conclusion
