What Goes Around, usually Comes Back AgainDear Readers,
Most industry veterans and self proclaimed “schmata” people could attest to the cyclical nature of our business. The old adage “what goes around comes around” is so true, especially when we relate it to our fashion styles and trends. Take a look through the pages of It’s A Kidsworld and you will see many styles of Fashion Past resurfacing for Spring/Summer 2014 by some of the most talented designers in the industry. From hippie-infl uenced fl owing, fl owery prints, the hi/low look and the must-have printed leggings. We are seeing so many products of past inspirations... only better!
With the wheel of fashion turning, could this old adage of what goes around comes around stand true for the growth and successes of our business as well?
Happy shopping!

snipits Easy breezy... Laman Blu
denver – Just as the summer heat is getting too much to bear, designer Holli Gibson brings light and airy children clothing to the forefront. With bright and fun butterfly prints, flamingo pink and lime green fishtail hem skirts, and smart shorts with lots of pockets, this season evokes Island Folk color schemes, where brighter is better. Add the cool brightness of melon and your color story is complete. Stripes make their way into this grouping as well, in a multi color stripe for binding and piping that ties all the colors together. Knits and wovens play in this theme, with the knits being the most eco-friendly ever – a blend of organic cotton and recycled polyester.
LamanBlu is known for its silky soft knits and Spring/Summer 2014 is no exception. Modal knits this season are in cotton candy colors of cherry blossom, lilac and baby’s breath and are mixed with floaty lace and floral heart appliqués. Perfect for every day play and even a flower girl. Wholesale prices for the season range from $15-55.
The company designs and manufactures their product entirely in the USA, much of it in Colorado. The collection debuted in 2009 to rave reviews and derives its constant inspiration from “laman blou” which means “blue sea” in Papiamentu.
LamanBlu will be showing their collection at the International markets of ENK in New York on August 5, 6, 7 and KIDShow Las Vegas on August 19, 20, 21 as well as regional markets in Atlanta, Dallas and Los Angeles.

intergalaCtiCThis high performance space age theme goes back to the future with tech-tailoring and technology. Designers draw inspiration from both future and nature where padding, quilting, zipper accent and modern closures go hand in hand with digital galactic graphics and stylish tech-savvy accessories.
Wonderous natureCreatures parade in the forest as they transform into little wild animals in this whimsical Fall 14 theme. Fluffy accents, mixed media, novel pockets, innovative zipper treatments, pop placements, foil prints and animal ear hoodies come together in an energetic color palette.
Monster storyTaking a cue from last season’s black humor theme, monstrous figures set the tone for this more lively interpretation. This theme has a brighter, more energetic feel with its artistic expression of furry creatures, quizzical one-eyed monsters, and fun costume driven silhouettes.

iCelantiC explorerThis Fall 14 season brings in the Icelantic Explorer, whose daily job includes braving the harsh winters whilst finding new adventures. Thick-layered silhouettes are seen in materials such as traditional jacquard, heavy knits, and bulky wool, while eco-fur compliments the look. Animal and camo prints make an appearance, while somber hues fog up this boundless theme.
Winter CaMpThis active theme is inspired by rock climbers, backcountry skiers, and travelers hiking through bush and across frozen lakes. Energized by the desire to trek to higher peaks, the winter campers are protected by outer layers, thermal, corduroy, sherpa and chunky knits, while the nature-like color story brings all these elements together.
sChool nerd Preppy Kitsch revisits the signature 50’s old school preppy vibe in synergy with a modern flair. Silhouettes such as classic letterman jackets, vintage polos, and tapered blazers serve as a canvas to the pop-like palette. At the 17th edition of Kleine Fabriek, Amsterdam, visitors enjoyed a presentation of appealing styles displayed in a pleasant atmosphere with a decidedly positive vibe. “True entrepreneurs have to stand out” was the widely shared view here, and “complaining about anything—even the weather—has become strictly taboo,” said a Kleine Fabriek spokesperson. This show’s unique combination of middle to high level fashion, accessories and home furnishings strives to be colorful, trendsetting and innovative. Visually compelling graphics and prints are a specialty here, with nature-related themes continuing to be the most popular motifs.
Molo, from Denmark, presented intricate and vividly colored full-coverage prints on a huge range of styles from baby coveralls and swimsuits to cool tee shirts for teenagers. Designs of daisies, pandas and lily pads were rendered in vibrant palettes, while a group of striped garments were equally eye-catching. Amsterdam’s Wild featured an “Africa” collection, a theme also seen at several other companies this season. Gorgeous photo-real graphics of zebras, elephants, lizards and tropical birds were artistically interpreted on high quality tee shirts, dresses, legging and more. The line is attracting a loyal group of young admirers who add new collectable styles to their “Wild” wardrobes each season. The Oilily collection was especially lovely this season as the company celebrates their 50th successful year in business. The line featured all Dutch-themed looks with motifs including tulips, windmills, bicycles, road maps and lace patterns. These traditional motifs were recreated
into fresh, contemporary designs with a great deal of charm. Outstanding sportswear was seen at No Tomatoes, Tumble ‘n Dry, Mood Street, Stones & Bones and many others offering high quality clothes with creative styling. For those interested in organic fabrics, Froy & Dind from Belgium was a popular choice, while Denmark’s Fred’s World, Mala and Ej Sikke Lej showcased bold, simple prints on practical knit playwear.
In Florence, Italy, the 77th edition of Pitti Immagine Bimbo attracted 10,000 visitors, including a high attendance of international buyers coming from Russia, Spain, Germany, Turkey, France and Belgium as well as Middle Eastern countries. The show featured a slightly different layout this season, with the directional “New View” section conveniently located in the central pavilion, giving greater visibility to these highly creative smaller companies.
The generous schedule of runway shows included more companies than ever before. Il Gufo, Parrot, Fun & Fun and Twinset were among those companies presenting great fashions, adorable models and elaborate choreography which delighted the audiences. A group show including several children’s wear companies from Spain was a welcome addition. Spanish collections such as Boboli, Bambolina and others are consistently high in quality, value and originality of design. Quis Quis, the newest collection by the co-founder of I Pinco Pallino presented elegant, luxurious outfits for boys and girls including intricate embroidered dresses in ethereal fabrics. At several of the runway shows, boys wore outfits of casually chic striped blazers, shorts and straw Fedora hats, creating a mood of easy-going nattiness.
In the main area of Pitti Bimbo some of the season’s strongest collections were seen at Gaultier Junior, Roccobarocco Kids, Ermanno Scervino, Simonetta and Twin Set.
Generally, styling at the Italian companies was paired down and less frou-frou than sometimes seen, while creativity and consumer appeal was not diminished. Versace Kids made a
splashy statement with an energetic “Rock & Roll” and comic- book inspired collection while John Galliano Kids showcased ultra-creative graphic designs. Paul Smith presented a theme of earth and space travel inspired by the music of David Bowie. Their new, trendy “tween” styles interpreted from the adult line should be a big success. As always, Fun & Fun attracted a steady stream of buyers to their ambitious range of sportswear for girls and boys of all ages. Their exciting runway show was a great opportunity to see these fun outfits put together, including accessories such as fringed boots and flower wreath headbands for girls.
From jeans wear and street wear collections to the highest level luxury looks seen in the Apartment area, Pitti Bimbo continues to hold the position as the most comprehensive event for international children’s fashion.
Rounding out the Spring/Summer season were two important shows in Paris: Playtime and who’s Next. Playtime is steadily growing each season in popularity, attendance and the selection of exhibitors, firmly solidifying its reputation for high quality and original designs. Long established Belgium companies such as Zorrro and Gold presented especially strong collections, while Noch Mini, Whip Cream and Macarons created much enthusiasm with unique, avant-garde lines. At Who’s Next, a wildly creative “Mexico” theme filled the entire show with colorful décor and festive flavor. Although primarily a show for junior and young men’s companies, Who’s Next is an interesting and fun venue to inspire trendy children’s fashion design.
Picture-perfect weather set the optimistic
mood at the European kid’s fashion shows for Spring/Summer 2014. This season’s
collections offered a strong selection of fresh,
wearable apparel with clean, striking designs.

In Paris, Amsterdam and Florence, summer dresses were the definite choice for girls—very few wore shorts or jeans. Cotton sun-dresses were seen in white, softened brights and prints such as modern little geometrics, stripes, floral prints and the season’s prevalent butterfly motifs. Skirt lengths were usually to the knee or longer, while leggings worn under dresses offered a practical and fashionable option for all activities.
Boys enjoyed wearing twill shorts and tee shirts or polo shirts, usually loose fitting shorts with lots of pockets. Nature related prints and graphics were very popular for ecology-loving boys and girls. Tiger and zebra skin prints, camouflage prints, animal artwork, birds and butterflies were seen everywhere, and plush animal backpacks complemented the nature-themed ensembles.

PeRu ModA 2013
Peru Moda, the foremost Latin American trade show venue, offered a unique opportunity to view high quality children’s clothes, textiles and toys and also to develop business relationships for producing products in Peru. This 16th edition of Peru Moda, held in Lima April 10th-12th, saw an attendance of 8,000 visitors including nearly 2,000 international visitors. The show is of particular interest to children’s wear buyers and manufacturers, as the superior qualities of Peruvian Pima cotton and sweater knits are becoming ever more known and desired. Visitors ranged from high profi le companies such as Nike and North Face to prestigious fashion names such as Cacharel. The French edition of Vogue magazine paid particular homage to Peru this year: their entire April edition was photographed in Peru by famous Peruvian fashion photographer Mario Testino. The stunningly beautiful images throughout the magazine mixed Peruvian and international fashion with spectacular scenery—an impressive vehicle which further enticed visitors to attend Peru Moda this year!
The show’s well-organized layout grouped many of the children’s apparel companies in one clearly marked section. Collections made of organic fabrics were of great interest to international buyers, especially the Europeans. One such collection is UMA by Bergman Rivera, a sophisticated and tasteful line of children’s clothes made of 100% certifi ed
organic cotton that is grown without chemicals. Their baby collection featured simply styled cotton knit garments such as body suits and onesies, colored in soft, natural shades of tan, ecru and blue. Delicate hand sewn details such as edges and smocking added refi ned touches. UMA’s company philosophy emphasizes the idea of “making a difference in the world, not only as a children’s clothing collection but a way of life.” BBmio offered a full line of Pima cotton baby wear, including a smaller segment of organic cotton styles. BBmio specializes in hand done embroidery, crocheted edges and smocked stitching on baby garments colored in pale neutrals (favored by the European clientele) to bright shades of green and pink preferred by the Peruvian market. BBmio’s Brenda Chau says, “We are developing a line of pajamas for pregnant women… they are made of Pima cotton which is very comfortable. We would like to sell them as gifts and to offer them in hospital gift stores.” While the best selling size range for BBmio is 3 to 9 months, their popular pajama collection is available for boys and girls up to 12 years. Petit Voyager is an ultra eco-conscious company featuring high quality Pima cotton, baby alpaca and organic fabrics available for specifi c customers. Their inks used for printing are natural and free of chemicals and even garment snaps are nickel-free. Petit Voyager’s CEO Rosario Valle Lau explains, “This collection is inspired by the little world traveler, the true citizen of the world. We incorporate design inspiration from pre-Colombian Andean symbols, to Japanese design elements.” Many of Petit Voyager’s simply refi ned styles are reversible, mixing such fabrics as Pima cotton interlock, pointelle and waffl e thermal knits. Says Rosario,”Our garments allow free movement for babies, to give comfort to the babies and the mothers. We use very few snaps…we prefer tie closures.” Woven fabrics were also well represented at Peru Moda, including a line of lovely white and ecru cotton dresses by Claudia of Claudiatex. Understated, elegant designs highlighted the pure cotton fabrics that assure comfort to children’s sensitive skin. Eco-
conscious clothing by Roxan Lo showcased an extensive, highly imaginative collection for boys and girls including hand crocheted fabrics, nature-inspired embroideries and creative hand-worked trimmings. Roxan Lo presented an adorable runway show that delighted the audience.
Peru Gift Show, the home and gift exhibit hall adjacent to Peru Moda, offered a great variety of home furnishings, toys and accessories for children and adults. Manuela Ramos divided their collections this season, exhibiting knit apparel at Peru Moda and their popular line of crocheted toys at Peru Gift Show. Other companies offering everything from pillows to picture frames showed uniquely Peruvian fl air, highlighting natural materials and artisanal craftsmanship. Many of these products could easily be adapted for children and would make attractive gift items for all ages.
Both buyers and manufacturers attending Peru Moda discovered a wealth of design inspiration and new resources for purchasing or developing products. Maria Whittingham, owner of Maria Luisa Boutique in Nyack, New York said, “I attended Peru Moda with the desire to establish business contacts for unique items to export to the United States. As a fi rst time attendee I left with a positive realization that I can develop direct relationships with Peruvian export companies, and to manufacture items that are unique to my boutique. The baby clothing and accessories that most caught my eye were selections of delicate hand knit and crochet clothing and accessories made of baby alpaca. I am currently reviewing a whimsical line of knit Pima cotton dolls for my shop’s baby department.” Trang Lio, co-owner of Marcia’s Attic for Kids in Englewood, New Jersey returned to Peru Moda this year after a very successful fi rst visit in 2012. Said Trang, “The kid’s market has increased so dramatically in Peru that we found it easier this year to make contacts with Peruvian vendors. They continue to produce amazing quality cotton products.” Romy Sophie Vinzelberg, product developer at Oh Baby London, was equally enthusiastic about her experiences in Peru. “I was impressed by the
quality of the products, especially the touch of Pima cotton and baby alpaca. The meticulous attention to detail and the pride in the product’s quality was great to see. I did a lot of networking during the show and made many suitable contacts which can be of great importance to our brand in the future.” this exciting annual event
brings together the best of Peruvian apparel, accessories, culture and contacts.

RetAileR Review
Marcia’s Attic for Kids, in Englewood, New Jersey was the host of a super-exciting two-day event: the premiere debut of the CCandy collection by Amber Sabathia, wife of Yankees’ pitcher CC Sabathia. The popular, long-established store was beautifully transformed to showcase colorful, baseball-themed sportswear. Balloons, dishes of candy and coordinating accessories complemented tables of bright graphic tee shirts, hooded sweatshirts, baby onesies, bibs and more. Designer and founder Amber Sabathia was on hand to speak to the delighted guests. Amber is the mother of four children who were her inspiration for this fresh, trendy alternative to the classic team logo sportswear for kids. Says Amber, “In a way, I’ve designed this line for myself, even though the clothing is for children. They’re for my children, who mean the world to me.” Fashionably dressed Amber understands the importance of incorporating the latest trends into her collection. “My girls are major divas!” she says. Foil printing and sweet candy hues give the girl’s items up-to- the minute appeal, while graffiti graphics and hot neon prints add a contemporary touch to baseball-themed graphics that all boys admire. The line is available for sizes newborn to 16-18. As for the name CCandy, Amber explains, “I was sitting in Yankee Stadium one day, when the cotton candy man came by and asked, ‘Who wants cotton candy?’ All of my four children said YES! Everyone loves cotton candy!”
On the second day of the event, Yankees’ pitcher CC Sabathia made a highly anticipated appearance in the store. He greeted his fans of all ages, who were lined up outside the store for blocks. The first 100 customers purchasing two CCandy items received a baseball signed by CC Sabathia. Marcia’s Attic co-owner Trang Lio was thrilled with the outcome of the event. “This two day event was a huge success all the way around,” said Trang. “People were lined up in the streets to meet CC after making their purchases. Amber spoke with the fans, handed out cotton candy, took pictures and answered their questions.” As for the collection, Trang says,” CCandy is continuing to do very well. It offers a twist to Yankee tee shirts by adding a splash of fun colors and great graphics that all kids would want to wear. Since it’s now summer, the short sleeved tee shirts are selling very well. They are a good price point for birthday gifts. The fleece sweatshirts are also doing well, and they’ll do even better for the upcoming Fall season.”
Trang adds, “It was such a pleasure to work with CC, Amber and her team. The Marcia’s Attic staff worked above and beyond to create a fun-filled day for all who attended. The little fans’ faces were the ones we loved to see the most. CC is a real role model to these kids, so it was nice to see them all enjoying the day.”
CCandy Event at Marcia’s Attic for KidsColorful, major league sports-themed kid’s wear by Amber Sabathia scores big.
