Agenda

• What is server virtualization• Server virtualization current state• Server virtualization future state• Costs• What is desktop virtualization

What is server virtualization

Server virtualization allows for more than one server to operate on the same piece of hardware.

Example One physical server can host 4 Windows 2003, 3 Windows 2012 and 5 Linux Servers all at the same time.

There are many vendors Vmware, Citrix, Xen, Oracle, Microsoft…

Virtual Servers

ITS Current State17 VMware ESXi 5.0 Enterprise Servers on IBM Servers 6 Independent Clusters with 2 to 4 members7 IBM Fibre SAN Controllers125 Virtual Servers1 Management Console4 Different physical buildings, currently clusters don’t span buildings

Current State continued• All VMs are created by ITServices• VM management is primarily done by ITServices • Starting to delegate control to others (examples are reboots,

patching and remote console access)• ITServices handles networking requirements and security• Investigation for combining management consoles• Partnerships with others on Disaster Recovery Planning

Future State• Planning infrastructure as a service• Platform as a service• Building redundancy for availability• New hardware (Servers, SAN)• Explore new technologies (Better backup)• Upgrade Software

Current costsCosts this year have been reduced significantly.Typical VM costs per year• $50 per CPU• $25 per GB RAM• $2 per GB SAS disk (fast)• $1 per GB SATA disk (not as fast)• Add $1 per GB for backup

Typical machine cost1CPU, 4GB Ram, 40GB fast OS disk, 60GB Slow data disk with 1 network IP with backup1x$50 =504x$25 =10040x$2 =8060x$1 =60100x$1 =100Total cost =$390 per year

Desktop VirtualizationThree types of desktop virtualization1. Terminal Server (over 250 with DFM)2. Streaming (OS and application typical of Xen appserver or

Microsoft App-V)3. Virtual desktop infrastructure (VMware View) Working with

library and Stats Canada on a 15 station View implementation
