This studio investigated the material qualities of concrete and truss systems, as well their implementation in building design. An explorative process was used to develop a ceramics showroom and adjoining factory.

Part one of this project focused on the ceramics showroom. My design took a layered approach that was inspired by the processes of casting the concrete.

Part two focused on designing an accompanying factory building. Using trusses as the new material, the challenge was to create a structure that related to the concrete showroom yet contrasted its heavy form. The result was a factory that continued the layering from the showroom but used much lighter frosted glazing for most of the façade.

This project used an iterative process that initially studied mass and void. After creating a series of underground chambers, we explored different lighting techniques and how light could be used as a material within a given volume.

We created a series of chambers and pathways that led visitors on a journey from dark to light. The intent was to create contemplative spaces of varied volumes and light qualities along a procession.

This project combined research with model making to explore a modern building’s structure and construction.

The Weisman Art Museum on the University of Minnesota campus was one of architect Frank Gehry’s first buildings in his signature stainless steel style. Built on the banks of the Mississippi, Gehry used an undulating steel façade to connect to the river.

This project explored the complex structure that makes the iconic building possible.

In this class, we explored different drawing techniques used to convey architecture.

Precise hand drafting was used to illustrate complex objects in a technical way. For this, machine parts and a chair by Gerrit Rietveld were chosen. White on black value drawing was used to explore the tonal quality of light. For this, spaces with unique lighting qualities were chosen.

This studio focused on creating a park pavilion on Lake Calhoun. The challenge was to relate the building to the dynamic qualities of the site.

For this, I proposed a focus on wind dependent sports that are prevalent on lake Calhoun. Grown out of a random field of masts inspired by the complexity of wind within the site, the different angles and directions of the park pavilion capture and engage the wind during different times and seasons. Outside, the complex of three buildings appears to ripple, animating the dynamic patterns that are otherwise unseen. By raising the pavilion above ground, the wind is able to flow underneath the buildings, animating the central grated courtyard and placing visitors up into the wind.
