Carpenters construct, erect, install and repair commercial and residential structures and fixturesof wood, plywood, metal studs and wallboard. They erect framework in buildings including sub-flooring, partitions and rafters, and install molding, wood paneling, cabinets, windows, doors andhardware as well as build forms for concrete work, build stairs and lay floors. Heavy & HighwayCarpenters build and assemble forms for concrete structures such as bridges, retaining walls, tun-nels, subways, drainage structures, hydro-electric developments, locks, dams and sewage treat-ment projects. Floor Coverers install, replace and repair floors of wood carpet and sheet goods inresidential, commercial and industrial buildings. Mill Cabinet Workers specialize in customizedwoodworking, designing and creating furniture, and fabricating and installing permanent fixturesfrom wood including cabinets, moldings, door frames and interior stairs. Millwrights are con-struction mechanics who install and maintain conveyor systems and large machinery for factoriesand shops. Pile Drivers build and maintain all types of piling and caissons, and specialize in foun-dations for buildings, dams and bridges.

Drywall Finishers seal joints between plasterboard and other wallboard to prepare wall surfacesand ceilings for painting, paper hanging and custom texturing. Glaziers cut and install all typesand sizes of plate, custom window, obscure leaded glass, mirrors and curtain wall. They also fitand install aluminum entrances, sidelight and show windows as well as plastic and porcelain panelsin metal and wood frames. Painters (residential, industrial and commercial) prepare surfacesand apply paints to walls and moldings, indoors and outdoors. Sheet Metal Workers build a variety of products from sheets of steel, aluminum, copper andother metals, and install the finished products. They are responsible for heating, air conditioningand ventilation of commercial buildings and homes. They also design and fabricate outdooritems, such as fascia, flashing, awning, gutters and metal roofs, as well as indoor kitchen equipmentand related exhaust systems.

The Builders Guild of Western Pennsylvania is a unique partnership ofbuilding trade unions and contractor associations which work togetherto provide the best value in construction services. Incorporated in1999, this non-profit organization today represents more than 40,000building trade workers and over 400 individual contractors.
To pursue a career in the building trades, interested individuals mayeither apply through an apprenticeship program or meet specialqualifications if they are currently a practicing journeyman.Generally, persons must:
• Be at least 18 years of age;
• Have a high school diploma or GED;
• Possess a valid Pennsylvania driver's license;
• Have suitable transportation; and
• Be drug free.
