James Cook Boys’ High School
Term Four~ December 2013
We are about to bring down the curtain on another successful academic
year at James Cook Boys High school. Our school community celebrated
and acknowledged the wonderful achievements of our students during the Sports Presentation day, held on Tuesday 10th December, and the Academ-
ic & Citizenship Awards day, held on Thursday 12th December 2013. Con-
gratulations to all the students recognised for their excellence and every
student for performing to the best of their ability. The key to every perfor-
mance is consistency and a commitment to continuous improvement in all
areas of study. A special mention must be given to all the students receiv-
ing special commendations from their respective Year Advisors. Please refer
to the published list of students in each of the year groups.
A very special “thank you” to all the teachers and the school administration
staff for their commitment, dedication and tireless efforts throughout the
year. Their attention to detail ensured our students received all the care,
support and tuition required to fulfil their potential as they continue to de-
velop into productive members within our school community. All the edu-
cational opportunities presented to our students throughout the year are
due to the efforts and good-will of our staff working beyond the required
responsibilities of the classroom. Special thanks and mention to our Exec-
utive team of teachers that provide the strategic educational leadership to
ensure the quality teaching and learning within the classrooms; our Wel-fare team of Year Advisors for ensuring the wellbeing of our students; all
the classroom teachers for teaching their expert subject content and being
role-models for our students; all the SAS staff for ensuring the efficient
functioning of the entire JCBHS educational organisation and all the par-
ents / carers for their unconditional support of our students at all times.
At this point, our school community would like to acknowledge the wonder-
ful contributions of Mr Mark Richards (Science faculty), Ms Amita Kumar
(Maths faculty), Ms Susan Dunn (Library) and Ms Lesley Rae (Head Teach-
er CAPA) to our school over a number of years. Our school is very grateful
for the all the good work these teachers have contributed to their respective
faculties and the entire school community. We wish these teachers all the
very best in 2014 as they continue their respective educational journeys
within NSW DEC Public Schools.
Also, our school community would like to sincerely congratulate Mr An-
drew Green (Head Teacher TAS), Mr Howard Forrester (Careers) and Mr
Keith Chung (Librarian) for a wonderful and distinguished career in Public
Education. These educators have enjoyed a life-time commitment to teach-
ing and supporting students. Their individual and collective efforts have
contributed in making a difference to many lives over a number of years.
They deserve plenty of accolades and should be very proud of their

achievements as educators within NSW DEC Public Schools. We wish them all the very best in their
futures as they retire from their role as public educators.
Among the many thoughts, impressions and reflections of the year that comprised 2013 the most sig-
nificant are, our numerous mentoring programs; peer tutoring; Harmony & Multicultural days; anti-
bullying programs; wide-ranging excursions; sports competitions; BEACON work programs; hosting
international education delegations; CAPA exhibitions and the BAYSIDE Primary Partnerships. All of
these extra-curricular educational opportunities assist in the social and emotional development of our
students. These programs strengthen the core values within our students and promote safe, respectful
and responsible learning at all times.
In 2014, we will see the first of the Gonski funding model appear in schools. This will mean an addi-
tional $80 000 of additional funds available to support student learning. This will be the first instal-
ment of funding through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM). Also, our school will continue with its
commitment to focus on “Reading to Learn” through the National Partnership funding. The prioritised
areas will be to continue developing teacher capacity and sustainability of programs through intensive
professional learning and classroom support throughout 2014.
On behalf of the entire school community, I wish everyone a very safe, relaxing and enjoyable holiday.
We look forward to seeing everyone fit, healthy and ready for an exciting 2014 academic year at James
Cook Boys High School.

The 2013 school year has come to a close and I would like to take this
opportunity to wish all our staff, students and families a joyous Christ-mas and safe holiday period. It has been another productive year at
James Cook and we are all looking forward to a well-earned rest before
we return refreshed and ready to tackle the challenges of 2014.
Staff have been developing new teaching programs for the National
Curriculum which will be implemented in 2014 for Years 7 and 9 in
the core areas of English, Maths, Science and History. Along with
many other programs that we have in store for 2014, it already looks
like shaping up to be a successful year awaiting us.
Years 7, 11 and 12 return on Wednesday 29th January, with Years 8, 9 and 10 returning the fol-
lowing day, Thursday 30th January. I ask that you have your son prepared with the correct full
school uniform, proper black lace up school shoes and all equipment required for a successful start to the new school year. Lowes at Rockdale Plaza is well stocked with all uniform items and
has a special of $50.00 off School Blazers purchased between 12th January to the 12th February.
I urge you to make your uniform purchases early and avoid the last minute January rush.
James Cook holds a special part in all our lives and it with sadness that we farewell several staff
this year, which is always a difficult thing to do. I wish all those staff moving to new schools best
wishes and good fortune. Your colleagues and students will always remember you with fondness
and your commitment to all facets of James Cook will not be forgotten.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.
