Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering with thirty-three years of experience in the chemical and

The blends exhibited a max. in toughness at intermediate compns. along with an accompanying max. in PAEK crystallinity. The chem. resistance of I is significantly improved with the addn. of a PAEK. In org. chems., the improvement was expected when tensile stress was plotted vs. log time to rupture. However, in aq. bases, the resistance of the blends was much greater than anticipated. Sci., Part B: Polym. Phys. (1987), 25(2), 311-23 AB Blends of various poly(aryl ether ketones) showed a range of miscibility and isomorphic behavior depending on mol. wt. Isomorphism was shown by only miscible blends. The dependence of the glass transition temp. vs. compn. exhibited a min. deviation from linearity whereas the melting temp. (Tm) vs. compn. exhibited a pronounced max. deviation from linear behavior. The cryst. Tm vs. compn. for isomorphic blend plots were considerably different than for random copolymers with isomorphic units. Homopolymers and random copolymers exhibited Tm that was a linear function of ketone content (increasing ketone content increased Tm). For blends, Tm was essentially the same as that of the higher-melting constituent until high levels of the low-melting constituent were present. The obsd. Tm vs. compn. behavior was interpreted using classical theory to calc. the components of the liq. and cryst. phase compns. As a miscible blend was cooled from the melt, essentially pure component of the highest Tm crystd. out of soln., as predicted by calcd. solid-liq. phase diagrams. This occurred until the crystn. was complete owing to spherulitic impingement. At high concns. of the low-melting constituent, low Tm values were obsd. because the highest-melting constituent was depleted before the crystn. was complete. In many miscible blends involving addn. of an amorphous polymer to a cryst. polymer, the degree of crystallinity of the cryst. polymer increased. Multiphase Syst.), 43-58 AB Miscible blends of bisphenol A-epichlorohydrin copolymer (I) [25068-38-6] with aliph. polyesters were studied by m.p. depression anal. and sorption to obtain the Flory-Huggins polymer-polymer interaction parameter (B). The B values obtained agreed well in sign, magnitude, and variation with ester repeat structure and the B values measured calorimetrically for mixts. of low-mol.-wt. compds. with structures which were analogous to those of the polymers. These comparisons suggested that the same mechanisms were responsible for the exothermic heat of mixing measured directly for the analogous compds. and indirectly for the miscible polymer blends. H bond formation between the OH group on I and the ester moiety was probably responsible for the exothermic interactions and polymer blend miscibility obsd. The comparison demonstrated - that within experimental error all three methods gave consistent magnitudes for the interaction parameters.
