Letter from Dr. Moore
BLACK STUDENT-ATHLETE SUMMITThe Power of Race in College Athletics
Dear Colleagues,
It’s our pleasure to welcome you to the fourth annual Black Student-Athlete Summit, the most comprehensive national gathering on the issues related to the Black experience within college athletics. The theme of this year’s convening is “The Power of Race in College Athletics” and will include a number of interesting discussions including keynotes by Tommie Harris, former NFL defensive tackle; Olympian Sanya Richards-Ross; Imani McGee-Stafford, Texas Ex and center for the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream; and Caylin Moore, 2017 Rhodes Scholar and former TCU safety.
Allow me to be the first to thank all those who are presenting research and leading discussions over the next three days. I also want to take a moment to thank all of our returning attendees, especially those who have been with us since 2015. It is because of your feedback and word of mouth that we have seen our attendance grow each and every year. Without you, there is no Black Student-Athlete Summit and we are forever thankful for your continued support.
I also want to thank the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement’s African American Male Research Initiative (AAMRI) for its leadership and for all it does in support of our male students of color. As part of the Longhorn Center for Academic Excellence, and through our local and national partnerships, AAMRI is defining how best to create and maintain a culture of Black male excellence. Thank you to Dr. Ryan Sutton and the entire team for always putting our first-generation and underrepresented male students of color before yourselves.
Finally, I would like to thank our sponsors for their support, including Texas Athletics, The Center for Sports Leadership and Innovation, The Texas Program in Sports & Media, the Ross Behavioral Group, Texas Rain, and The College Athlete Magazine.
The Black Student-Athlete Summit has established itself as one of our university’s signature events. Like the DDCE, the Summit is committed to increasing student outcomes and unlocking the potential of our ideas. With the addition of our mental health pre-conference this year, I expect only greater things as we look forward to our fifth annual convening in 2019.
We are so proud to have you join us in support of student-athletes across the country. I hope that you enjoy all that The University of Texas at Austin and the city of Austin have to offer during your stay with us.
Sincerely,
Dr. Leonard Moore Interim Vice President for Diversity and Community Engagement George W. Littlefield Professor of American History
