OLYMPIC SHOOTING
In 1995, the National Rifle Association
transferred responsibilities to USA Shooting
as the National Governing Body for United
States participation in Olympic Shooting
Sports. The organization implements and
manages development programs and sanctions
events at the local, state, regional and national
levels in order to build and maintain teams for the Olympic shooting
sports. Headquartered in Colorado Springs, CO, at the U.S. Olympic
Training Center, USA Shooting has a full-time staff dedicated to
furthering the sport and supporting athletes and members of the
organization.
In order to be considered for selection as a member of the USA
Shooting Team, shooters must: Be a citizen of the United States of
America; Meet the requirements set forth by IOC, USOC, and ISSF;
Compete and score well in a selection competition during the four
years leading up to the Olympics. There are Olympic trials conducted
in the final 18 months leading up to the Olympics where walk-ons
may be eligible to compete. For additional information, including

Similar to NRA’s Bianchi Cup, the U.S. Practical Shooting Association (USPSA) evolved from self-
defense, law enforcement and military people challenging the traditional standards of technique,
training and equipment. Competition evolved from "leather slap" quick draw events of the 1950's to
a sport requiring competitors to deal with constantly changing scenarios while shooting rapidly and
accurately with full power handguns.
Today, USPSA is the largest action-based practical shooting organization in the world. There are
over 400 local clubs within the U.S., and an ever growing number of affiliated ranges around the
world. With over 23,000 members, USPSA is growing every year. With exception of classifiers, the
stages in USPSA test all facets of a competitor's skill and are only limited to the rules and the stage
designer's imagination.
To find a club near you, please visit www.uspsa.org.

WORLD IPSC SHOOTING CHAMPIONSHIPS
TBD U.S. IPSC Nationals Frostproof, FL
The International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC) recognizes handgun, rifle, shotgun,
and action air shooting disciplines. Competitive IPSC-style shooting began in southern California in
the late 1950s and quickly spread throughout the shooting world to Australia, Central and South
America, Europe, and Southern Africa. As the sport attracted greater interest, the participants sought
a more structured competition environment. As a result, in May of 1976, the International Pistol
Conference was held in Columbia, MO, where sportsmen from around the world participated in
determining the organization of IPSC marksmanship.
Diversity is encouraged in IPSC shooting to keep the sport from becoming too formalized or
standardized. Typically, competitors do not know in advance what to expect in any given match. For
additional information, log on to: www.ipsc.org.

IDPA NATIONAL AND WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Oct. 23 IDPA World Championship Talladega, AL
Founded in 1996, the International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) is based in Berryville, AR.
IDPA was created as a shooting sport based on defensive pistol techniques and full-charge service
ammunition to solve simulated "real world" self-defense scenarios. Shooters competing in defensive
pistol events are required to use practical handguns and holsters that are deemed suitable for self-
defense use. Rather than using extensively modified guns, handmade ammunition and speed-draw
holsters, IDPA matches emphasize cover, self-defense techniques and practical firearms. For
additional information, log on to: www.idpa.com.

NATIONAL AND WORLD SASS SHOOTING CHAMPIONSHIPS
Feb. 18 Winter Range * Phoenix, AZ
Jun. 13 End of Trail/World Championship Founders Ranch, NM
- Cowboy Action Shooting
- Wild Bunch Action Shooting
- SASS Mounted Shooting.
* Winter Range is the Single Action Shooting Society's National Championship of Cowboy Action
Shooting, Encampment and Frontier Exhibition at the Ben Avery Shooting Range north of Phoenix,
AZ.
The Single Action Shooting Society (SASS) is an international organization that promotes Cowboy
Action Shooting. SASS endorses regional, national and world competition and seeks to protect its
members' Second Amendment rights. One of the unique aspects of SASS-approved Cowboy Action
Shooting is the requirement placed on costuming. Each participant is required to adopt a shooting
alias appropriate to a character or profession of the late 19th century, a Hollywood western star, or
an appropriate character from fiction. Regardless of a SASS member's individual area of interest,
SASS events provide regular opportunities for fellowship and fun with like-minded folks and
families. For additional information, log on to: www.sassnet.com.

and cowboy action shooters could enjoy the competitive nature of shooting sports while riding on
horseback. CMSA is an equestrian sport where mounted contestants compete in timed events using
two .45 caliber single action revolvers each loaded with five rounds of specially prepared blank
ammunition. The CMSA sponsors different levels of competition for everyone, ranging from novice
levels to the seasoned professional. For additional information, log on to:

NATIONAL BENCHREST CHAMPIONSHIPS
TBD LR Nationals Sacramento, CA
TBD SR Score Nationals Eaton, CO
TBD LR Score Nationals Huntsville, TX
Oct. 10 Group Nationals Phoenix, AZ
Benchrest shooting is a sport in which very precise rifles are shot at paper targets from a supported
position on a “bench.” In contrast with other shooting sports, benchrest shooters do not shoot from
prone, kneeling or standing positions. They rest their rifle on a rest, thereby placing emphasis on the
inherent accuracy of the rifle and ammunition. Benchrest shooters are notoriously detail-oriented and
constantly trying to further the accuracy potential of the rifle through experimentation. Much of what
we know today about ballistics and precision comes from this discipline. For additional information,

NATIONAL AMATEUR TRAP ASSOCIATION CHAMPIONSHIPS
Jul. 31 Grand American World Shooting Complex, IL
Trapshooting is one of three major disciplines of competitive clay pigeon shooting (shotgun shooting
at clay targets). The other disciplines are skeet shooting and sporting clays. Within each discipline,
there are variations. Trapshooting has been a sport since the late 18th century when real birds were
used. Artificial birds were introduced around the time of the American Civil War. Glass balls and
subsequently "clay" targets were introduced in the later 1800s. For additional information, log on to www.shootata.com

50
NATIONAL SPORTING CLAYS CHAMPIONSHIP
Oct. 29 National Sporting Clays Championship San Antonio, TX
Sporting Clays is the closest thing to actual field shooting of all the shotgun sports. The sport dates
back to England in the early 1900s when trap shooting used live pigeons. With the introduction of
clay targets, the sport began to take on the popular form known today. Rather than using standard
distances, target angles and target sizes, sporting clay courses are designed to simulate the hunting of
ducks, pheasants and even rabbits. Six different sizes of clay targets give the participant the
experience of actual hunting conditions. For additional information, log on to www.mynsca.com.
January 2019 www.ssusa.org
51
NATIONAL SKEET SHOOTING ASSOCIATION CHAMPIONSHIPS
Sep. 25 World Skeet Championships San Antonio, TX
The National Skeet Shooting Association (NSSA) is the world's largest organization dedicated to
Skeet. In 1920, a group of American bird hunters started shooting clay targets to practice wing
shooting, and thus began the game of Skeet. Skeet shooting is a recreational and competitive activity
where participants attempt to break clay disks automatically flung into the air from two fixed
stations at high speed from a variety of angles. For additional information, log on to

AMERICAN AIR GUN FIELD TARGET ASSOCIATION
Oct. 4 AAFTA Nationals Baton Rouge, LA
British Airgun Field Target shooting began in 1981 as an alternative to hunting. The American
Airgun Field Target Association (AFTA) consists of member clubs throughout the United States that
shoot and support Field Target in America. Its main goal is to promote Field Target shooting clubs in
the United States. AAFTA is responsible for establishing rules and guidelines so that participants
may compete in regional and national competitions in a manner fair to all. AAFTA oversees a
National Championship Match each calendar year. AAFTA Member Clubs put in bids each year to
