Shaking Things Up Part III: Millennials Aren’t Fooled
Last week we met Mike Henry, owner and CEO of Paragon Media Strategies, a firm which provides consulting and research to content providers. Mike talked about a study he did for the NAB
ten years ago on millennials, and how radio was missing the boat with this key demo. Fast forward to today, and guess what? Radio is still losing this important group. Alt’s primary demo feels radio is more for their parents, not them, and they expect something different from radio. Let’s pick up where we left off.
Mike, it would seem millennials have strong BS sensors, so the normal “tricks” that radio tries just aren’t working, right? That’s an understatement! Millennials chastise music ra-dio for its lack of credibility and authenticity. Throw that
old smoke and mirrors playbook out the window, folks.
One of your suggestions is Alt radio needs to build a community beyond the station itself. How do PDs do that?Alternative stations are in a great position to build their own local social networks. Stations must get real and be real with their content, do things for the community and not just your-self, and give Millennials a brand they can embrace without being embarrassed by doing so.
Good point. Overall, what’s your advice for PDs who are reading this right now?Question everything. Question me. Question this research. Question the very existence of your format and why you do the things you do.
Excellent advice! On that score, what else do you recommend?Ask yourself: are you doing things the way you do for you, your boss, your company or for the

record labels? Or, are you doing it solely for your audience? It’s possible that many things you’re doing to target Millennials is incorrect and your strategy is ill-suited for their needs.
This conversation has been most useful Mike. Any final thoughts? Yes, if you can’t program a radio station without research, then you can’t do it any better with research. Programming radio is an art more than science. If you and your station are not having fun, then your listeners won’t either. A radio station is not a vase to put up on a pedestal and leave alone. Play with it, try new ap-proaches, do the unexpected. Make listeners do a second take when you surprise them with a bold move. Finally, and this gives me the most hope, most Millennials I’ve researched are selfish, single-minded individualists who only want what’s best for them and the things they care about most. That’s good news, because if and when radio does finally respond to Millennials with fresh approach-es that respond directly to their needs, then Millennials will absolutely use radio more than before. This is not a lost cause. But, the door is barely cracked with outdated radio formats and hokey branding. Millennials will only respond to bold operators who make smart moves in their direction.
E d Krampf was Live 105’s origi-nal GM, and has also overseen KROQ, among many other sta-
tions during his illustrious career. Ed is now Business Manager for one of Spanish radio’s most popu-lar syndicated radio programs, El Show de Piolin. And that gives him a refreshing perspective. He reached out to me to comment on this se-ries of “shaking it up” articles.
“Check the latest census reports for your markets and see what the fastest growing segment of the population is,” Krampf said during our phone conversation, advis-ing Alt PDs. He then quickly expounded upon this theme. “It will most likely be Hispanic, and they will be on average ten years younger than the rest of the popu-lation in the market. This new baby boom generation needs your attention, and attention to their culture.”
I had to laugh. Not because it was funny, but because this is something my own mother used to say to me when she would read about Alt ratings problems in The Sands Report. Of course, she was in Los Angeles, which is about one half Hispanic, so she had a close-up look at who is out there. Ed

and I had a good chuckle when I noted the country isn’t all white anymore, although when listening to Alterna-tive radio you wouldn’t ever know that. Alt radio isn’t that progressive, I guess.
Ed maintained that programmers would be smart to tap into Latino culture, much like KROQ has done with their Weenie Roast y Fiesta, which has a “ranchero feel” according to Ed. And forget about just focusing on Cinco de Mayo promotions at bars. “That’s insulting,” he enlightened me, saying it would show a lot more sensitivity to the community if you instead celebrated Fiestas Patrias or Mexican Independence Day.
He had several more suggestions for programmers looking to shake things up and improve their ratings. “Speak ‘Spanglish’ and go find your own local Mexican Alternative bands. Their music is fantastic, whether in Spanish or English. Get Latinos in your research, and over-sample them as they’re probably telling Nielsen they are English dominant. Bring Latinos in your build-ing from other departments into your strategy sessions, and get out in high density Hispanic parts of your market and promote yourself.”
Krampf concluded our conversation by saying that before you slit your wrists because you’ve wracked up a bad book or two, ratings problems could be as simple as one or two families who didn’t get a meter this time, and not programming issues at all. And that is a comforting thought, indeed!

Alot of hot tunes in the news, so let’s hit it. First, The Head
and The Heart was most added this week, followed closely by Bastille. “Blame” picked up WKQX, KTCL, WBRU, and many more. Third on the leaderboard was the new Spoon, which went on in Chicago, KC, SD (91x) and tons of oth-
ers...Next, RCA’s Dennis Blair and Artie Gentile are super-stoked because this Missio record (added at KROQ, Live 105, WRFF, X96, et al) is reacting like crazy across the Alt world with instant sales. James Howard helped discover it, and says, “‘Middle Fingers’ matches the mood of the country. It’s dark, but optimistic. Authen-tic, yet catchy. Missio has captured the moment—don’t miss it!”...Congrats to Rob G., as Green Day score their 11th #1 with “Still Breathing”...Rag ‘N’ Bone Man is over 100,000,000 video views (yes, one hundred million)!...Billy Burrs is helping bring guitars back to Alt and we need it! He tells me that Highly Suspect is outselling 16 of the Alt Top 20. “My Name Is Human” (here) is a hit!...More sales: The xx had an enorm0us #1 Soundscan debut. “On Hold” is such a killer song...Marian Hill on the strength of the Apple ad synch is rolling. “Down” is Shazaming like crazy everywhere in the US...LP is a stand-out song. Jon Manley at The End is an early be-liever of “Lost On You”...Want more rock among the mid-tempos? Lower Than Atlantis to the rescue. Already on WROX...The Strum-
bellas “Young and Wild” impacts this week!..So do The Shins...As does The Heydaze...WSUN adds Sigma...WRDA, The Point and
KCJK all hop on surging Mondo Cozmo... Kevin Zinger sent me this cool link to the new Saving Banksy trailer with Common Kings...Hey, I gotta go. Thanks for stopping by today! —Richard Sands
