The Start of His Teaching• Jesus first began to teach
in synagogues throughout Judea.
• He frequently used the Book of Isaiah to emphasize that he was the messiah and brought the “good news”.
• People reacted shocked and confused at first.
His Message• Jesus called that all people
repent for their sins.• He often taught using
parables to help people understand his teachings.
• Jesus revealed himself through these teachings and his actions (healings and miracles)
Reaction• People from all
around came to hear his teachings however not everyone was convinced.
• People frequently called him out in public and on several occasions even tried to kill him.
Jesus’ Qualities as a Teacher• He was genuine: He backed
up what he said and practiced what he preached.
• He was available: He traveled to those he wished to teach.
• He was understandable: He used down-to-earth language that all could relate to.
Jesus’ Teaching Tools• Frequently used
metaphors and similes to convey a message.
• Used vivid imagery and description.
• Taught with authority and certainty.
• Great at debating and used this skill to his advantage.
Location of Jesus Activity• With a partner, complete the assignment titled
“Where Was It” on page 163 of your books.• Write out your answer in a complete sentence and
include the reference to where it is located in the Gospels.
• Turn in one paper for each pair, make sure both your names on it.
The Meaning of Parable• The word “parable” means
placing two things side by side to compare them.
• The parable Jesus told were simple and came from everyday life.
• They compare very familiar things to something not yet understood.
Why Parables?• They reveal a truth
in an interesting and engaging way.
• They are usually easy to remember.
• They instantly give the reader an image in their mind.
For Example….
• “The kingdom of Heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls. When he finds a pearl of great price, he goes and sells all he has and buys it.” Matthew 13:45-46
• What does this mean???
Messages of Parables• 1. The Kingdom of God is for
all• 2. Sinners are welcome• 3. Salvation has arrived in
the person of Jesus• 4. Repentance is required
before entering the Kingdom• 5. The Kingdom is for the
poor and lowly• 6. Kingdom should be
rejoiced over
Parables Assignment• In groups of 3-4 you will be given a parable to read an
interpret. • Together you will read your parable and each person
will write a summary of the parable and what are the messages and meanings of the parable. (each person will turn in a paper)
• Next you will come up with a way of teaching your parable to the class. Either reading it and presenting some sort of imagery to go along with it, acting it out while somebody narrates it, or any other way your group decides.
• You will present your parable on Monday!

• Parable Presentations and Discussion• Parable Review Assignment– 1. What is meant by the expression “Kingdom of
God”?– 2. What is a parable? Why did Jesus tell parables?– 3. Choose two of the parables presented other than
your own and describe them as well as explain their meaning.
The Sermon on the Mount• Matthew Chapters 5 and 7• Jesus taught to a large crowd
from a mountainside (very similar to Moses)
• The message is that Jesus is the New Lawgiver and that his instructions guide those who have accepted the Good News.
• The sermon includes Jesus’ blessings (beatitudes which means happiness)
The Beatitudes• 1. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the
kingdom of Heaven.• 2. Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be
comforted.• 3.Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the
land.• 4. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for
righteousness, for they will be satisfied.
The Beatitudes• 5. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown
mercy.• 6. Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see
God.• 7. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be
called the children of God.• 8. Blessed are they who are persecuted for the
sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.
Beatitudes Assignment
• Complete the activity on page 172 in the box titled, “ How Well Are You Living the Beatitudes”– Complete the self survey by righting the statement
and rating yourself from 0-10.– Then answer questions 1 and 2. Do not answer
question 3.
