Diplomats in the Making
The room was abuzz with excitement and delegates were in whispered conversations. The auditorium
was packed with enthusiastic diplomats who were itching to get the conference started. The Director
General, Neha Prabhu and the Secretary General, Tejas Gopalan declared the conference open.
Following the introduction of the executive board members, the delegates broke into their committees to
begin two days of constructive debate on world issues. The delegates looked forward to the real life
simulation of the Press Conference on the second day of the MUN. They answered the carefully
formulated questions with unwavering tenacity and perseverance. Simultaneously every committee was
engaged in discussions ranging from political assassinations to the desperate situation of laborers. This
was followed by the much awaited award ceremony. The CHSVMUN was one of a kind, right from its
live streaming to its social night, planned and executed with utmost care each step of the way. It was an
absolutely delightful experience for all the delegates who had been a part of this year’s CHSVMUN.

The Patriotic Fervour
Patriotism - the multi-hued garb of a nation
Patriotism is a sensation so profound that rings in our ears, racing under our skin, through our blood.
In a diverse country like ours where an amalgamation of paradoxes confront us, our sense of unity is
what envelops us through thick and thin. Loyalty is a king among virtues and being devoted to one’s
motherland makes one no less than a king. The sense of innate pride on being an Indian, regardless of
caste, gender, colour, is an unparalleled joy. Being truly patriotic is the greatest way to pay our
respects to the mother who has nurtured and watched us grow. Being a true patriot is not about how
far one will go to prove his love for his country but how high in esteem he holds it. One might not be
able to leave an impact after the ticking of his clock, but his fingerprints on the walls of time will
prove his adoration for his country. As we salute the immortal martyrs of our magnificent country, let
us strive to hold hands with our fellow countrymen and march towards a better, stronger and united
India.
Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high, this is where our country has awakened.

Janmashtami or Krishna Jayanti, the
birthday of Lord Krishna, was
celebrated with much enthusiasm. An
Inter House 'matka' breaking event was
conducted with energetic students
forming a human pyramid to break the
pot. Blindfolded girls also had an
opportunity to prove their mettle. The
students of the houses designed clothes
and accessories for the Vrindavan
Krishna in the school courtyard.
Ganesh Chaturthi
Vinayaka Chaturthi was celebrated with great gusto and enthusiasm across all grade levels. Students
and admin staff sang shlokas and bhajans on Vinayaka to bring out the spirit of the occasion. The stu-
dents delivered speeches and presented dance performances during the assembly. The highlight of the
event was the arrival of children dressed as Ganesha, the harbinger of good luck and prosperity. The
whole school wore a festive look on the day.
Global Citizenship Programme
From Ambition to Action
Twelve students of grade X Desh, along with the teachers-in-charge participated in an NGO-organised
volunteer-driven effort to clean Chitrakulam, the water tank belonging to the renowned Kesava
Perumal Temple located in Mylapore.
The Chitrakulam, a sacred tank believed to be over twenty centuries old, normally fills up during the
rainy season and recharges the ground water table. However, this year, due to the failure of the rains, it
remains dry and barren, but for pollutants of all kinds that can be found inside.
With the continued effort of temple trustees, Non-Governmental Organisations, and countless
volunteers, the goal of clearing the tank of debris, wild vegetation and waste is well within reach.
The students of Chettinad Hari Shree Vidyalayam hoped not only to make an important impact, but also
inspire others to do the same. Considering the fact that many volunteers are now taking action and
spreading awareness through media coverage, it is only a matter of time before the hopes of these
students become a reality.

Painting my way to South Korea
Towards the beginning of this year I signed up for the InKo International Art Competition through the
school, as it seemed like a good opportunity to visit South Korea and learn about their culture.
Our topic was ‘Man and Nature’ and I painted a piece which described how every man is benefited
from nature and is a part of it. Yet, we humans decide to take advantage of the gifts of mother nature
instead of cherishing and taking care of it. I believe that it’s our turn to give back to mother nature and
be grateful for all she has done for us.
I sent in two entries and won the silver medal. The competition was held between Korea, India and
Japan. My sponsored 5 day trip to Busan gave me an opportunity to visit various museums,
art galleries and Buddhist temples and enjoy the native Korean food. Besides dressing up in native
Korean attire, we also learnt a little bit of Korean to communicate with our friends in Korea. Though I
could win only a consolation prize, the memories created during my trip to Korea would stay with me
for years to come.

Students’ Corner
Krishna Jayanthi or Gokulashtami is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Krishna. In Tamil Nadu, it is
celebrated with great joy and happiness. People offer sweets, beaten rice and butter, considered to be
Krishna’s favourite. Little Krishna feet are drawn as kolams throughout the house signifying his arrival
into the home. Flowers and sweets are offered late in the evening, the time when it is believed Krishna
was born.

Celebrations
Varalakshmi Pooja is celebrated to propitiate Goddess Lakshmi, the consort of Vishnu. It is celebrated on
a Friday before full moon in the Tamizh month of Aadi (July-August). It is an important pooja performed
by women across the four southern states. It is believed that worshipping Goddess Varalakshmi is
equivalent to worshipping Goddess Ashtalakshmi, the eight forms of Lakshmi, representing wealth, earth,
learning, love, fame, peace, pleasure and strength.
- Akshitha Y and Haritha B, Grade IV
Ganesh Chaturthi was first celebrated in Pune during the time of Chatrapathi Shivaji. A ten day festival,
it starts on the 4th day of the Hindu Solar month Bhadrapada, which typically falls in the Gregorian
month of August or September. The festival is marked by the installation of Ganesha clay idols both in the
homes and public pandals (temporary stage). The lord is decorated with sacred thread, jewels, new
garments and fruits, flowers and delicious sweets are offered to him. The festival ends on the 10th day
wherein the idol is immersed in the nearby water body.
