Mr Russell Barlow
Hello Everyone
I would like to thank all Parents/Carers who helped out with travel and have
helped out in caring for our students at the various events across the district this
term. It has been a hectic start to the term and it’s through your hard work and
love for our students that leads to our school’s success.
What a blast it was to see kids having the time of their lives at U8’s Day! Thanks
to Mrs Atkins for organising this event with parents and helpers. Students in P-
2 had a fantastic time as we can see on all the photos we have to share. Also,
last week was the District Community Athletics Day and it was great to see all
our students that were participating having a great go at all the events. Well
done to you all!! To top it all off ….Julatten State Schools marching at Carnival
on Friday Night…WOW!! Is all I can say… the boys and girls that turned up made
for a wonderful and energetic experience I won’t forget …again WOW!! and
Thank you to all those that participated or were involved !! WOW!!
I wish to clarify again that Ms Molly Bendle will not be returning next term and
Mrs Maddison Atkins has agreed to stay at Julatten as her replacement.
Just a reminder about bike safety – we have had a report of some children who
were lucky not to be seriously hurt while riding and not following road safety
rules. Please talk to your children about the dangers of riding on the road and
how to stay safe. Our staff will also be reminding students about being vigilant
when riding their bikes.
Walking into classrooms I can see staff teaching and working with students on
their assessments. I can see our students are responding, showing great work
and achieving success. Keep up the good work everyone!!
NAPLAN ONLINE contrary to National News reports was a great success for
Julatten State School. We had no issues with any of the testing that occurred
over that particular week. Job well done to all our students. There was not one
student in year 3 and 5 who started a test that did not finish it. Awesome!!
For parents who would like to know more about helping with their children’s
reading at home please contact me. I have some tips that may assist in your
child’s reading development.
Til next time Mr B

Year P/1/2
From Mrs Maddison Atkins
In prep / 1/ 2 we have had a great 2 weeks. On the 22nd of May we went down to Mossman to the under 8’s day. Everyone had an amazing time. There was so much to do including face painting, animals, beading, twister, bubble blowing and lots lots more. Under 8’s day was about celebrating learning through play and interactions well as enjoying being a child and having a great time. We also had a busy week getting ready for carnival last week. As a class we were in charge of coming up with something silver. We decided that big silver fish would be fun and effective. The students helped paint all the fish and made different types of scales so each one was unique. The fish looked amazing on the night. In class we are getting close to completing our assessment for all our subjects for this term. We have all been very busy reading a lot of different cultural stories in English, designing boats that float in Science, looking at time and shapes in Maths and learning about different technology and what we use it for in Digital technology. We have a busy few weeks of assessment ahead. Mrs Atkins
Years 3 & 4
From Mr Kilfoy
Wow, how time flies, week 6 already! We have been super busy in the short amount of time we had together. We had a major Science focus learning all about how day and night occurs, including shadow investigations so we can use all this knowledge to create a power point presentation to demonstrate our understanding. In English we have been focusing on procedural texts, in particular, looking at the difference between written and spoken dialogue. We are also reading Fantastic Mr Fox and analysing the main characters. This will help us create and present a dialogue between two characters from a story, where one character is telling another character how to do something. Students will present their dialogue with a partner using appropriate interaction skills. To help support your child, getting them to explain a simple task such as making toast and discussing formal and informal language can assist them understanding this form of language feature.
Years 5 & 6 From Ms Warburton
Building Futuristic Colonies in Space
We participated in an online presentation about constructing colonies on Mars and Venus in the future. Jeremy, William and Hugo, the presenters, explained their ideas about how this could happen. Koah: I learnt so much information about making new colonies in space. It may even be possible to build a chicken farm on another planet. Chase: I listened and watched some presentations about futuristic space colonies. The farms would have to have a dome over them as animals can’t use oxygen tanks. Elijah: Today I learnt so much about traveling to Mars and Venus in reusable rockets and building new colonies. We may need them in the future in case we can’t live on Earth any longer. Elijah, Koah, Chase: It was interesting, educational and exciting to hear the ideas.
P & C News Hello to Parents, Students and the Community, On Election Day the P&C held a sausage sizzle at the school to raise money for school facilities. Parents/Carers this is a great opportunity to get your child’s hearing and eyesight tested. Australian Hearing does hearing tests at the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre, you can contact them on Ph: (07) 4099 5518 or you can ask your local GP. To find local Optometrists in the region, just look online. They are available between the townships of Mareeba and Port Douglas. We ask that you also share the resulting information with the school. This is so, that if required we can assist your child with their educational needs.
