Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day
The 7th annual Eunice Kennedy Shriver (EKS) Day, to
be held on Saturday, September 24, 2016, will continue to
celebrate the theme of "Play Unified to Live Unified”.
Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day is an annual celebration of her life and an invitation for every-
one to "Play Unified to Live Unified!" This global call to action stems from Mrs. Shriver's
teaching that on the playing field, we forget about our differences and recognize our mutual
humanity. On EKS Day, we invite you to join us in playing unified and teaching the world to
live unified. We are demonstrating Eunice Kennedy Shriver's enduring vision by calling upon
athletes, families and friends to come together in a day of inclusive sport and play.
Visit www.eksday.org and www.eunicekennedyshirver.org to learn more.
Although Mrs. Shriver has been gone since 2009, the eulogy below penned by Oprah Winfrey
serves as a reminder to us regarding just how important Mrs. Shriver was to our movement
and the world.
Eunice Shriver lived as a champion, and I admired her so much. She was the first (and besides Barack
Obama, the only) person who ever inspired me to say, "If you run for president, I'll campaign for you."
This was in the 1980s. I believed then and still do that she
would have made a great president. She embodied the idea of
leader as servant.
In 2004 I was vacationing in the Caribbean when the cata-
strophic Indian Ocean tsunami hit. I was standing at the edge
of a pier overlooking the water when suddenly I heard a
strange commotion. Coming toward me was a woman wear-
ing a swimsuit, a bathrobe, and a pink bathing cap flipped up
around her ears; arms waving in the air, she was calling my
name loudly. It was Eunice.
She wasted barely a moment on the niceties of Long time, no
see, How are you, blah, blah. Instead, she dove right in: "I
know you're on vacation, but what are you planning to do
about the tsunami?"
"I...I...I don't have a plan right now," I stuttered. "I feel terri-
ble, though. It's just awful what happened."
"Everybody feels terrible," she said. "But you can do some-
thing. Call Maria. Set up a meeting. Make a plan. Meet with
Teddy. Do something."
This, to me, is the essence of Eunice Shriver. She was a woman who got things done.

LAW ENFORCEMENT TORCH RUN
This past Spring, the Law Enforce-
ment Torch Run hosted Strikes for
Special Olympics fundraising
events in Huron and Madison.
Both events were hugely success-
ful, with 217 new bowlers raising
over $28,433 for Special Olympics
South Dakota and our local pro-
grams.
This Fall, we are hoping to host
more bowling events in Mitchell, Sioux Falls and Aberdeen. Participants are asked
to pay or raise a minimum of $35 per person and in return received food and drink,
a T-shirt, three games of bowling and shoe rental. The event also included door
prizes, music, fun and prizes to the top scoring bowlers!
We are looking forward to bringing even more Strikes for Special Olympics events
to various bowling alleys across the state of South Dakota this Winter and hope
that everyone can join us for a bowlin’ good time! If you are interested in hosting
an event in your town or would like to participate, please contact the State Office
today!
2016 Torch Run
Thank you to everyone who came out to
cheer on our amazing Law Enforcement Torch
Run “Core Runners”as they carried the Flame
of Hope across the state of South Dakota
running through 27 communities raising
awareness for Special Olympics South Dako-
ta. It was a long four days, but knowing we’d
get to see all of you at our stops kept us go-
ing until we finally reached the State Summer
Games in Spearfish and were able to light the
caldron at the Opening Ceremony.
People always say “Thank You” to us for all
we do for our athletes in Special Olympics,
but we want to say “Thank You” to all of our
athletes for what you do for us! You bring
out everything that’s good in this world! You
give us back so much more than we deliver
and we don’t know what we’d do with out
you!

Pigskin Madness The Law Enforcement Torch Run and SOSD are once again hosting Pigskin Madness! This fund-raiser combines two of our favorite things—football and raising money for Special Olympics South Dakota!
Tickets can be purchased for $20 and are being sold across the state by SOSD Staff, South Da-kota Law Enforcement and Special Olympics local groups. Ticket owners are assigned four randomly drawn teams each week. Total points scored by your four teams are added together to give you a weekly total. Each ticket lasts for the entire 17 weeks of the regular professional foot-
ball season.
We will be awarding prizes to the top eight highest scores this year, as well as to the lowest
score. Over $600 will be awarded each week! We are also adding a Grand Prize winner at the end of the regular season for the individual who has the highest accumulated score over the 17 week season. This winner will receive $500.00.
Please contact the State Office at 605-331-4117 if you are interested in selling a book or pur-chasing a ticket. Tickets must be purchased by 5:00 pm on Friday, August 26. For more infor-mation or to check weekly results, visit our web-site at www.sosd.org.

This annual holiday blood drive is a friendly
competition be-
tween the Sioux

who can recruit the
most blood donors.
Congratulations to
the Police Dept. for
winning this years contest! As their charity
of choice, a donation of $350 was made to

folks who receive this invaluable gift of life.
A huge thank you to the Police Department

DEVELOPMENT
Estate Planning
Are you aware of the many ways you can give the joy and pride of Special Olympics even when you are
gone? Leave your legacy and consider Special Olympics in your estate planning.
Contact Darryl Nordquist, President/CEO for more information.
The vision of the Unify Center was to help SOSD grow Unified Schools statewide. Special Olympics Unified Schools is built upon the premise that in order to have the greatest impact, the change process needs to start with young people. Unified Schools brings youth with and without intellectual disabilities together through education, sports and related initiatives that provide them with the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to create and sustain school communities that promote the acceptance, respect and hu-man dignity for all students.
This vision is now a reality! “We are inches away from building com-pletion. We need a little more tile in the gym and then some clean-
up, but we are basically there.” said SOSD President/CEO Darryl Nordquist. “The facility will have a multitude of uses.”
Special Olympics athletes will be the priority at the Unify Center. The facility will help eliminate the never ending issue of finding train-ing facilities in the area. From an athlete’s perspective, the Unify Center will give them the opportunity to excel in an environment
where everyone can be a winner and to build on life skills and social interactions.

SOSD is very grateful to the Knights
of Columbus for their love and sup-
port over the past three decades.
The state office as well as a number
of local delegations benefit from
their financial contributions. In the
first half of 2016, these funds to-
taled almost $10,000. Not only do
the Knights support us financially,
but there are a number of events
where they prepare and serve
meals while filling a myriad of oth-
er volunteer roles.
If you see a Knight today, give them
a hug…. they deserve it! Pictured Darryl Nordquist and Tad Ratterman

Bill Kazmaier is a former world champi-
on powerlifter, world champion strong-
man and professional wrestler. During the
1970s and 1980s, he set numerous power-
lifting and strongman world records, and
won two International Powerlifting Feder-
ation (IPF) World Championships and
three World's Strongest Man titles. In the
1980s, Kazmaier became famous for his
claim to be "the strongest man who ever
lived" by equaling and surpassing spectac-
ular and versatile feats of strength of fa-
mous strongmen of the 20th century. He is
widely considered to be one of the all-time
greatest competitors in strength competi-
tions.
Mr. Kazmaier and our Board President, Dr.
Mark Harlow, were both teammates and
classmates in middle school. Both went on
to be all state football players and both
earned scholarships to play football at Big
Ten schools - Dr. Harlow to Northwestern
and Mr. Kazmaier to Wisconsin.
It’s this connection that brought Mr. Kaz-
maier to join us this past May at our State
Summer Games in Spearfish. He shared a
few words with us at Opening Ceremony
and spent considerable time with our Pow-
erlifters.
Thank you, Mr. Kazmaier for your encour-
agement and kind words. We appreciate
you!
A huge “THANK YOU” to all crocheters and knitters from across the state and nation who carefully crafted these scarves with skill and love. You have touched us with your kindness and generosity and we are grateful for your support!

INTRODUCING JULIE BRIGGS Julie Briggs has recently accepted the
position of Vice Pres-
ident - Outreach for
SOSD.
Julie’s interest in
working with people
with disabilities is a
personal one. When
her son Scotty was
born with Down Syn-
drome she changed her focus from retail
marketing to a passion that hit close to
home, helping others. In 1997, Julie began
working for the Birth to Three program
for Minnehaha County. In 2001 she as-
sumed the position of Director of Training
for SD Parent Connection, traveling
throughout SD providing training about
special education laws and advocating for
children with special needs. Julie then had
the opportunity to work for Sanford Chil-
dren’s Miracle Network as a Development
Director, raising funds to help kids and
their families with special needs. Prior to
coming to SOSD, Julie was the Executive
Director of the Sioux Falls Business Re-
source Network (BRN), a nonprofit corpo-
ration promoting the hiring of people with
disabilities. The Sioux Falls BRN worked
with the public by fostering an environ-
ment that assists businesses in improv-
ing their production and efficiency.

BITS & PIECES
O n March 2, 2016 we
participated in our 6th
annual SOSD spon-
sored ‘Spread The Word To End
The Word’ activities and pro-
grams across the state.
The goal of this Special Olym-
pics initiative is to educate the
public regarding the casual use
of the hurtful and degrading
word ‘retarded’ while encour-
aging adults, teens and
children alike to take the
pledge to stop using the
word ‘retarded’, and to help
promote the new R-word:
RESPECT.
A record number 98 schools
and a number of businesses
displayed posters, hung
banners and distributed
various pieces of messaged
swag to thousands of students
across our state. The impact of
this program is illustrated
through this testimonial by
Chrissy Peterson:
Meade School District has done
the Spread The Word To End
The Word campaign for the last
three years. It has become an
expectation among the staff
and students. As in past years,
six of my office co-workers
divided up the schools and
created age-appropriate cam-
paigns at each site.
Teachers at each building wore
bracelets and their lanyards
with their school ID card and
modeled their pledge to the
students. Additionally, the
STWTETW campaign was fea-
tured in the In Touch Meade
School District newsletter that
is sent to approximately 4000
email accounts as well as on
the district’s Facebook page
which reaches even more peo-
ple. The school board was edu-
cated of the campaign through
an information sheet as well.
At the three elementary build-
ings, (approximately 1300 stu-
dents), the guidance counse-
lors did classroom talks about
STWTETW. All elementary
students who wanted to elimi-
nate the R-word and replace it
with respectful language
signed the banner. The counse-
lors asked the teachers to con-
tinue to hold the students ac-
countable in their daily lan-
guage use. At one elementary
school, the counselors said
many of the students identi-
fied their parents/family mem-
bers using the words, retard
and retarded, in disrespectful
ways. Because of this, the
counselors decided to put to-
gether a STWTETW article for
the school’s April newsletter
for parents to hear the mes-
sage too.
I conducted personal cam-
paigns at the middle and high
school with 1150 students.
This year, a high school student
said, “Hey, are we hanging up
the signed banner right next to
the one we did last year?” I
was filled with pride because
this meant the banner had
meaning and the students
knew exactly where it was
hung! While signing another
banner, a middle school stu-
dent coolly said, “Like, I signed
this last year, too!”
Unfortunately, I also had a mid-
dle school student ask if she
could buy some extra
STWTETW bracelets for her
family because of their contin-
ued use of the R-word. I was
shocked, dumbfounded, and
messily put a dozen bracelets
in her hands. Daily, I work with
school age students of all ages
and 99% of them are accepting
of people with disabilities; like-
ly because they have grown up
with their classmates that have
some sort of challenge. They
have known each other since
Kindergarten and have accept-
ed their peers as they are on
every level; smart, athletic,
disabled, clownish, etc. I didn’t
realize until this year, that my
campaign needs to ex-
tend to the older gener-
ation; my students’
family members.
We could not continue
to conduct these awe-
some campaigns if it
wasn’t for the wonder-
ful materials. We, at
Meade School District,
most appreciate them
and have a lot of fun promot-
ing STWTETW.
Chrissy Peterson - Special Ser-
viced Director (Meade School
District)
Without the dedication
and expertise of these
amazing volunteers,
this important mes-
sage would not have
reached almost 28,000
South Dakota
students.
THANK YOU!
