COMOX — St. Joseph’s General Hospital looks forward to realizing its new role in the Valley once VIHA’s new hospital
opens, according to president and CEO Jane Murphy.
Now that property at North Island College (2300 Ryan Road) has been announced as the chosen site for the
new Comox Valley Hospital, Murphy said discussions surrounding the future of St. Joe’s are picking up speed — and she’s excited about what its future role may be.
“Lots of people have
lots of ideas, which is really exciting, and over the next months and years, to have discussion and dialogue and form a plan around that, and talk to funding agencies, is all part of the work
we’ll be doing,” said Murphy.
St. Joseph’s is owned and operated by the Diocese of Victoria through an affi liation
with the Vancouver Island Health Authority.
Acute-care services at St. Joe’s are expected to transfer
to to the new hospital in 2017, which is the target completion date.

Shelley, age 30, came to me with Post Partum depression.
She was a fi rst time mom with a six-month old baby and overwhelmed by the experience. She had diffi culty with breast feeding to start but fi nally got the hang of it. She is sleep deprived and unable to fi nd time for herself.
Her husband works out of town so she is fi nding that she is experiencing not only depression, but anxiety. She feels guilty because she is beginning to resent the needs of the baby and is experiencing lack of interest in the baby, worrying about hurting the baby and lack of concern for herself.
These are the reasons she is now seeking professional
help. She wants to avoid antidepressants because she is breast feeding and is concerned about possible risks to the baby.
The majority of women with newborns often experience what is commonly referred to as the “baby blues” which dissipate a few weeks after the baby is born.
Symptoms include: moodiness, sadness, diffi culty sleeping, irritability, appetite changes and concentration problems.
The fi x for this mild form is normally lots of rest and more support from the partner and
family. In the case of
Shelley, she needed aggressive naturopathic care to get results in order to avoid the use of anti-depressants.
I reviewed the following strategy with her and made her commit to visits with me every two weeks to make sure was progressing well.
1. Secure a good support
network. I encouraged her to see a counselor and talked to her about asking for more help from her partner and her close family. She had been afraid to open up about her feelings with her loved ones. I suggested that a counselor could help her with this if she was not feeling safe.
2. Sleep: come up with a strategy where she could get better quality
and uninterrupted sleep. This included using homeopathic Rubimeds that help not only with anxiety and depression but also sleep. These remedies are safe with breast feeding.
3. Adrenal support: Pregnancy, delivery and breast feeding play havoc with the stress pathways in the body including the adrenal and thyroid glands. Adrenal support is addressed using the wonderful adaptogenic herb, Siberian Ginseng which is safe during breast feeding. I will have the mother take this herb for months to help with energy, stamina and well being. During pregnancy, moms will feel great because they are benefi ting from the babies adrenal function but when they give birth this stops abruptly, contributing to post partum depression.
4. Optimize the
thyroid: TSH, T4 and T3 blood tests help me make sure the thyroid is getting the support it needs and I will treat the thyroid before many MD’s will, using effective herbal remedies to start.
5. Covering the basics: Preconception care and prenatal care that I cover with moms before they get pregnant and deliver really helps prevent post partum depression. Basic nutrients help most cases of depression.
6. Hormone balancing: Some women benefi t from temporary progesterone supplementation to feel better but this can impact breast feeding so professional assessment is warranted.
Risk factors for developing post partum depression are: having a prior history, stressful events during pregnancy or birth, and women with marital diffi culties or general lack of social support.

In the month of May, halibut fi shing was very good in the Campbell River area and near Courtenay at Kitty Coleman. There are fi sh being caught in the 80 to 200 pound range, but many anglers keep the smaller fi sh around 20 pounds. Spreader Bar with Bait, Mudrakers and Power Bait with jig heads are catching fi sh. Point Wilson Darts are catching bottom fi sh like lingcod and snapper and They are also used for catching salmon. For salmon, the usual hotspots are Browns Bay, The Hump and Lighthouse. Some nice catches are coming from Kitty Coleman. A lure that is very popular is the Tomic plug or spoon. On the West Coast, Gibran White got out fi shing after May 11 and fi shed the areas that she wanted to get to. Due to changing weather patterns, the best fi shing was out on the reef and some small feeders were caught. On the cleaning table, the salmon were full of small 5-inch needlefi sh. Anglers are trolling at an average depth of 85 to 110 feet of water. I had the opportunity to fi sh at Moutcha Bay Resort a few years back during the kayak-fi shing derby. Dent Island Lodge is hosting a fi shing derby on June 15 and 16. The deadline to register is June 10. For information call Justin Farr 250-203-2553. The ant hatch is on and trout fi shing has been outstanding at the local lakes in both Campbell River and Courtenay. I use a black fl y number 12 or smaller and you can fi sh off shore using power bait . This year will be an excellent year to catch pinks in the Campbell River; pink, green or blue fl ies and lures will work when the action heats up.

As part of Local Government Awareness Week, more than 80 students from Carihi, Robron Centre and Timberline attended an afternoon presentation at City Hall on May 24 – and got a chance to allocate funds to City services.
City staff representing different departments had one minute to sum up services provided to the community –
and request funding support. On behalf of the recreation department, Rachel Lim of Campbell River’s Youth Action Committee highlighted how local government services support Campbell River. Each student was given $700,000 in City Hall bucks to allocate to 10 departments, and in less than fi ve minutes, students had voted with their cash.
Compared against this year’s City budget, students had boosted funding support for the water department, environmental protection, parks, recreation and culture and land use planning. The presentation was inspired by the Sim City video game, where people play at building and maintaining a community.
“No other level of government has a
video game based on it,” pointed out Jerry Berry, a consultant who had a long career as a senior offi cial with a Vancouver Island local government.
Berry donated his time to give the students an energetic presentation about the history and role of local government.
He noted that the system of local government property taxation currently in place
in British Columbia is approximately 200 years old. And he talked about the importance of young people running for election to ensure their priorities are represented in local government decision-making.
“Jerry Berry always provides an interesting
perspective, and when the classes were leaving two teachers and a few students told me how much they enjoyed the session,” says City Clerk Peter Wipper. “They said it was informative, entertaining, interactive and fun – and we really appreciate everyone’s
participation.”A video of the
student presentation is available for viewing on the City’s website. Click on the link from the homepage at www.campbellriver.ca – or check it out under City Hall / City Government / Local Government Awareness Week.

QUINSAM LIQUOR
PROCESS
possibilities for the St. Joe’s site is a good thing, according to Murphy.
“We do have the time, which is very nice, to step back and really understand the needs of the community,” Murphy said, adding there will be opportunity for community input during the decision process.
“It really is about starting to look at the community and the demographics and the healthcare needs and start to identify potentially other roles that could be met by this site, because really there’s quite an infrastructure on this site.”
Services related to seniors’ care are a need in the community
now and in the future, according to Murphy, and more residential beds and various support services to help seniors are potential uses of the space.
There is “a whole continuum of services that our seniors need to support them, and some of it is day programs, some of it is residential care, a need for more respite care, bathing programs, it’s really a whole range of services, but certainly beds, residential care beds, yes, there will be a need,” said Murphy, adding these are just ideas right now and nothing is decided.
Murphy noted VIHA is updating its residential bed plan for Vancouver Island, which should give a good idea of how many VIHA-funded residential beds are
planned for the Valley in the future.
While she acknowledged St. Joe’s is waiting for word on this number, she said the hospital is proactively planning so it’s ready to submit a proposal if it decides to when VIHA wants to contract for these services.
The 125 residential beds at the Views — Eagleview Manor and Oceanview Manor — will remain on-site, and renovations will be considered as part of the overall redevelopment of the St. Joe’s site.
“One of the objectives would be to create more single rooms, which is becoming more of the standard, and that is something that we very much would look at,” Murphy added.
And St. Joe’s will continue in its partnership with the Comox Valley Hospice Society to add a 10-bed hospice/palliative care residence to the Views.
Murphy also said the transitional care unit of the hospital, which serves patients who are either returning home or moving into residential care, could be kept, though again, this idea is just something that’s being talked about around the hospital.
“That’s a type of service that, you know, can be provided very well associated with residential care, so (there’s) potential to look at that as remaining on-site and becoming part of a range of services here at St. Joseph’s,” she explained.

ECCE student Keosha Girrard designed a math fi shing game for an in-class assignment. She’s playing the game with Azelia, a regular visitor from the nearby Beaufort Children’s Centre.
“Working with children is one of the most rewarding careers that you can have. Just being with them while they’re making discoveries
and learning is really exciting,” said ECCEstudent Lindsay Mallette. “I’ve beenthinking about entering the programfor a long time. My only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner.”
You’ll also meet children and employersfrom the Beaufort Children’s Centre,an independent child care provider onNIC’s Comox Valleycampus. NIC studentsregularly invitechildren to their own classroom for uniquelearning opportunities, and complete workexperience therethroughout the year.
“NIC studentshave the opportunity to work in either of the 3 to 5 year old age groups,” said OceanKneeland, Beaufort’s administrator. “Many
of those students become substitutes, oreventually staff, at the centre.”
NIC’s certifi cate program trains a total of 40 new early childhood educatorsin the Comox Valleyand Port Alberni to fi ll demand every year. In 2009, the British Columbia Wageand Salary Survey estimated 44 per centof ECCE employers inthe Vancouver Island/Coastal region hadunfi lled vacancies.
“All of ourgraduates who want to be working willbe working in June,”said instructor VlastaGrant. “There is a realshortage of child care workers in the Comox Valley.”
The certifi cateprogram is availablepart-time or full-time
over 10 months in the Comox Valleyand Port Alberni. Students gain appliedknowledge and confi dence, startingwith fundamental child development, health and safety, andprofessional practice skills. Each term, they explore different work environments inpracticum placements.
