The Motor City Shiners are pleased to announce that the Imperial Divan have signed up to be members of our Club. It is not only a huge honor for us, but it will also put Mighty Moslem in the spotlight at the upcoming Imperial Session in Tampa as we present the Imperial line with their Shiner shirts, membership certificates, and dues cards. To quote Illustrious Imperial Sir Jim Smith, “I would be most honored to be a member of the Motor City Shiners! As you know, I’m convinced that the future of our great Fraternity is based on Nobles beginning new, fun units and you have hit a home run! It would be a true honor to “Wear your Colors!”
In addition, Imperial Sir Chris Smith has specifically requested that the Shiners host a beach party for him in Daytona next year as he will be the Imperial Potentate at that time. Those that are attending the Imperial Convention in Daytona in 2017 are guaranteed to have a great time. We are looking at having the four other tap rooms there and any Noble and their Lady who would like to stop in. This will be another big public relations event for us and for the Temple.
For those that we will be in Tampa for this year’s Imperial Convention, there will be a Shiners / Shinettes outing. Once the full schedule for Tampa is released, I will send a note out to all members as quickly as possible specifying the date and the time. We are currently looking at going to the Hidden Spring Ale Works which is only a mile or so from the convention center. www.hiddenspringsaleworks.com
Please remember to pack you Shiners and Shinettes shirts both for the outing and for the presentation of membership to the Imperial Divan.
After our annual business meeting, it was determined that the Officers for the Shiners will remain the same. We are looking at continued outings amongst Moslem Shrine and to see what we can do to not only increase membership in Taproom 1 but, to see if we can get another five Temples to sign up before years end. For those that travel to other Temples, please spread the word about our Club and see if you can generate some interest.
Not already making your own? NO PROBLEM - we are beginning to set up tours at local establishments to not only better understand the process of home brewing, but to sample their products as well… Don’t have your own equipment? NO PROBLEM – we will point you in the right direction. Not interested in making your own? NO PROBLEM – we are happy to have members or guests that simply like to sample.
Don’t forget that our website is up and running: www.motorcityshiners.com
Come on in, the Taps are open…

MESSAGE froM our PoteNtAte
It is hard to believe it is June already. So, its time to take stock of our progress so far this year. So, how are we doing…well, on the events front, our Winter Sportsman raffle was another success, again thanks to Michael Zelmanski and his crew. The new Shrine Circus at Suburban Collection Show place was a success. For the first time in the past few years, this circus was profitable. We made money, established a new location and had a successful carnival as part of the circus. The new location at Suburban will only continue to grow this circus each year for many years to come. So, our first and second quarter events were successful, profitable and exposed our Shrine to the public in a very favorable light. There events should be not only a major source of income for many years to come, but also a great source of public relations for our Shrine and our mission.
On the Public Relations side, our Divan attended the East West Shrine game as a Divan for the first time ever. By all accounts we did a great job in meeting and greeting dignitaries and Imperial Officers. We made a great impression on Imperial and that was our goal, to get Moslem back in the fore front of Temples as one of the best. Both the Raffle and the Circus provided us an opportunity to get our name and what we do out before the public through our advertising and by the presences of our Nobles at these events. For the circus we had ads on 4 major radio stations, and one major television station. We were again supporters of Pennies for Power, which got our name out there on several additional radio stations and kept our name before the public as a sponsor of a great program. As a result, our clown unit and the Lady clowns have made several visits to local schools that supported the Pennies for Power event, again keeping our name out before the public. On another front, the majority of our Divan, made a trip to the Public Relations conference in Tampa, and made quite an impression both in quantity and quality of our attending members. Some great ideas were discussed and all of our attending Divan members brought back some great ideas for our use in keeping our name before the public.
We just wrapped up our first Ceremonial in a while. We had 17 new Nobles join our Temple. It was a great day for Moslem Shrine. It was fun, enjoyable, and very well done. My appreciation to everyone who attended. We have an outstanding 1st section, with everyone doing a great job, from the Dramatic Corps and Brass Band, to our Legion of Honor and Emcee, Mike Dib. To
digress here for a minute, a lot of us are going to miss you Mr. Dib. You have been a leader, a friend, a confidante to many here, myself included. It is certainly our loss and Traverse City’s gain. You and your family will be missed by many. Do not forget your friends, stop in a say hello once in a while.
Our 2nd Section was also a hit with the crowd! We had a great pass and review with all the Units represented. Everyone did a great job of showing our new Nobles how we have fun and represent our Temple. The Directors Staff did a great job on the stunts and everyone had a great time. The pies were flying in all directions, with everyone on the Divan getting the most of it, me included. It was a great day and everyone involved has my deepest gratitude. Our Class Honoree, Ill. Sir John Thornhill, was grateful for the day and certainly deserving of the honor. John has given so much to our Temple and our Nobles. I am honored to call him a friend. As a Potentate, you always hope for a great class, to show respect to the Honoree, to bring our Nobles together for fun and fellowship, to enjoy the day and make it memorable for our candidates. We succeeded. To all those Nobles who brought in a candidate my heart felt gratitude. To all the Nobles and units that participated, my thanks for your time and efforts on behalf of our Temple.
We continue to improve each month. Our Moslimite has been out on time every month since January. Our finances are improving each year and now we are improving how we operate internally. We are currently working on improving our accounting system, rewriting operations and procedures manuals, and developing a new business model to insure proper planning, execution and
accounting for our operations, events and business for the long term. We have had a great first half of the year. My thanks to everyone who has participated in improving our Temple.

Supplies for our Troops – 2016 Mission CompleteHi all, I wanted to give a hearty thank you to so
many that graciously donated supplies and funding of items to the Afghanistan Troop Supply Donation Project this season.Numerous supply packages were donated from our nobility and received at the Temple lobby, as well as receiving donations from Clubs and Units, including two wheelchairs donated to Child-Care from the Highlanders.Moslem Temple set an all-time record in value in excess of $1900! My lady Teri and recently met with the kind folks at the Bay City National Guard Armory on behalf of Moslem Temple whereby we delivered the goods. These items will soon be shipped to our troops, which will surely put everything to good use! It was a pleasure and an honor to take part in this, and I would like to thank our Potentate, Illustrious Sir- Craig Stigleman for “green-lighting” the project this year, and High Priest & Prophet- Jeff Geske for launching this project a couple years back. Silver Gardens Spring Renovation Project is complete and we look amazing!! What a difference it has made and is making with our clients…many compliments. We have enjoyed the smiling visits from all of you and your guests that have taken a tour through the Ballrooms and Lobby to see our new look. Our Team is filled with many dedicated staff across the board from Front to Back of House. While many of you have come to know this over the years, it is nice when our client’s take the time to put their appreciation of our food and service in writing, especially in the form
of a testimonial for all to see. We have received several testimonials that have been published on both The Knot and Wedding Wire websites; two Wedding based social media platforms that we advertise through. These raving
reviews have given Silver Gardens the Couples’ Choice Award on Wedding Wire for 2016. It is recognition like this that proves to the community how fabulous we are at what we do. I am so proud of our team and this recognition.Another platform that we use for marketing is Facebook. If you have not done so already, please ‘like’ our page and follow us on Facebook. This gives Silver Garden’s extra exposure to your network of family and friends at no cost. We greatly appreciate your referrals and would be honored to assist you and your families with your special event planning needs. Call Carol or Kalli for assistance @ 248.569.2299.
Thank you for all of your support!!

Walk for Love
Hello NoblesAs a Shriner we all know of the great medical care the children receive at our Shriners Hospitals. The list of medical issues that our Hospitals treat is amazing. Our research programs and working with the many universities looking for new and better treatments is second to none. These things we all know and say with pride, but there is more to care then healing the body. Shriners Hospitals has a term that they use, Care Beyond our Walls. This idea takes our kids to explore and grow their potential inside and out of our medical centers. In the Hospitals the kids may see therapy dogs, musicians, magicians, sports teams, clowns. Activities and classes are provided at no cost. The kids can take Therapeutic recreation workshops and day trips from art projects and gardening, to adaptive scuba, sled hockey or golf.At Chicago there are SCI sports camps in the summer where spinal cord injury patients can participate in ten different adaptive sports venues in the Chicago area.At Erie there is adaptive sailing at the Bayfront Maritime Center. This program allows members primarily youth
with physical disabilities, to sail independently on Presque Isle Bay.Therapeutic horseback riding, patients with spinal cord injuries have a chance to go back to nature on a horse. Conditions such as spina bifida, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis or trauma are candidates for this therapy.Wheelchair basketball Erie host a six week wheelchair basketball event. The Erie Hospital wheelchair team the Erie Shriners Jammers who are Erie patients, take on visiting teams in competition. All of these programs are a result of all of us caring for kids, so be proud to wear your Fez, be proud to help so many kids live the most productive lives they can.I have highlighted Chicago and Erie events because on June 5th both Hospitals will be Hosting open houses and if you Nobles and your ladies have the opportunity, I would recommend taking one of our Moslem Shrine Trips to these Hospitals.
Later this summer our Cincinnati Hospital will be holding their annual open house and a trip will be setup and dates posted.

Shrine Lancers by Todd Wyber (Piper T)
Hello Lancers,June is here!!!!!! This is my favorite month of the year. June represents warm weather, fishing, parading, parks, trips, golfing, and the best of all, the end of another school year! Vacation time is here. I once heard an old retired teacher say, “The three best reasons to become a teacher are June, July and August”. Well, there are many other reasons to be a teacher, but those three and definitely in the mix.As I’m sitting here on May 10th, typing the article for June, I’m thinking of all the fun we are going to have had by the time you read this article. We will have had the Grosse Ile parade, the Lincoln Park parade, the Sterling Heights parade, and perhaps even the Belleville parade, depending on when you get the Moslemite at your house.Having not done any of those events yet, I can only imagine that we had a great time at each one of them. We probably will have had a car break down along the way. We probably had a few good lunches afterwards enjoying each others brotherhood and camaraderie, and are still working on a really cool farmers tan. I can’t remember not having a farmers tan. Even in the middle of the winter, you can still see it faintly. With this being said, please keep track of future events this summer and please call someone if you have any questions about any of them. We need all Lancers to show up. The more that show up, the more fun we have. So far, 2016 has been a lot of fun!I have not heard of any health issues within the unit, so no news is good news, as they say.I would like to congratulate Jim R. for his wonderful service and dedication behind the bar at our monthly meetings. He does and great job and only ever has nice words and kind gestures to share with us. Perhaps we can persuade him to get a lime and tonic once in a while though, hey Jim? Either way, keep up the good work Jim. We are behind you 100%.Below is an updated schedule of parades and outings for the summer. Please try to make as many parades as possible. We need at least 5-6 cars per parade to have a good showing. We should be able to easily field around 10 cars for the parades, so please do your part and come out with your cars. Please advise as soon as you can about which parades you are able to make or not make. We would like to have a list of Lancers able to make these parades in advance so we can plan accordingly. Remember, we aren’t selling tickets this summer, so parades are the main focus and we should all be able to participate.
MEMBERS! If you know of a city that would like to hire the unit for their parade or function, please let myself, Matt P. or Dave T. know about it and we will pursue it. We would like to add some new parades to our schedule this summer. So, please let us know if you are aware of a parade or driving opportunity for the unit to be in. Thank you.Below is a list of dates/events coming up. This list will change as we get closer to the dates, so please keep current of changes each month. Upcoming events:6/18 Belleville – Show up around 9:306/26 New Baltimore – TBD (call to find out if you haven’t already heard something by now)7/4 Wyandotte – Show up around 8:307/30 Yale – TBD9/4 State Fair – Labor day weekend9/8-9/11 GREAT LAKES Convention9/18? Richmond parade – TBD9/25 Clinton – same as alwaysDon’t forget about Royal Oak and Grosse Pointe in November.Dave T. has sent out emails with specific times, parking instructions and other things for the above parades. Please call if you need any of that information.Until next time, enjoy the rest of June and we hope to see you at the July Lancer business meeting at the Temple. The first Monday of every month at 7pm is when we hold our monthly business meetings and the food has been great. All Shriners are welcome to come to our meetings to ask questions and to see what being a Lancer is all about. To all NEW and Experienced Shriners, here is your chance. If you have been looking for that one unit that you would like to belong to, look no further. Come to the Lancer room on the first Monday of each month and meet the guys. You will have the time of your life driving a Lancer car in the parades. Contact myself, Matt P. or Dave Talbot for information and make a decision that I know you won’t regret. Come join one of the fastest growing units in Moslem and become a Lancer today!Until next time, keep your engines runnin. Todd Wyber
