Notes to the teacher:
This activity is designed to help students practice their rhythm reading skills and to read
the notes on the music staff.
We do this activity as a class for a couple of lessons. I usually divide the class into four
teams. Throughout the lesson I will call students up to roll the dice and place the bugs
on the game board. Once they understand how to play, I will add it to my centers.
I have provided 4 levels of playing cards.
Level 1= q Q n
Level 2= q Q n h H
Level 3= q Q n h H w y T m M
Level 4= all line and space notes on the music staff
Materials needed for the game:
1. 2 1” wooden cube to make the dice (stickers for the dice are included in this
packet) I purchased my cubes from my local teacher store “School Banks”. Lake
Shore Learning has 1” color cubes for around $20 www.lakeshorelearning.com
2. 80 Small plastic bugs. I purchased my bugs from Oriental Trading Company. I
bought two sets of 48bugs. You could use other materials for markers on the gameboard (e.g. buttons, beads, bingo chips, etc.)
3. Bug Tongs. These are not necessary, but they make it fun. I bought mine from
Oriental Trading Company www.orientaltrading.com
4. Flip Frog Game. I purchase this from Oriental Trading Company

These are the sckers for the dice. Each row is for one of the dice. Just cut and glue them onto the
wooden cube, then use Hodge Podge to seal it on. You can get Hodge Podge at your local cra store (e.g.
Hobby Lobby, Michaels, JoAnn’s)

Materials Needed:
1. 4 player cards
2. Flip flop game pieces
3. Bugs and 4 Tongs
4. 2 Wooden Dice
Step 1: Each player will need 1 player card, 1 bug tong, 1 flip frog
Step 2: lay the bugs out on the floor in the middle of the group. Also set the pond in the middle.
Step 3: The first player roles the dice.
Let’s say you rolled a 2 and an eighth note. You will place your bug on row 2 under the eighth note
Don’t forget to use the tongs to pick
the bug up. You only need 1 bug.
You need to read the rhythm in the square before you place the bug down. If you fail to read the
rhythm, you lose your bug. Another player can steal your bug if they catch you not reading the rhythm.
If a player catches you reading the rhythm wrong, then they can steal your bug.
Step 4: Try to earn an extra bug by flipping your frog into the lile pond. If the frog makes it into
the pond, you earn an extra bug that you can place anywhere you want on your board. If you miss,
it’s me for the next player to roll the dice.
The goal of the game is to collect the most bugs.
If you get a Splat, then you can
take a bug off of 1 player’s board.
If you get two Splats, you can take
1 bug from two players.
If you get a Wild, you can
place the bug onto any spot
on your board. It doesn’t
maer what the other dice
has.
