Museum farewells Bet Nelley by Paul Campbell
More than 200 Kaipara locals and out-of-town visitors gathered to farewell Bet Nelley, the retiring CEO of the Kauri Museum, at a function in the museum’s Volunteer Hall.
“There were lots of tourism people, and supporters of museum events, like the Kaipara Arts Award, as well as community leaders,” said Matakohe local and museum supporter, Belinda Weber.
“There were notable speeches by Kaipara commission chair, John
Robertson as well museum board chair, Peter King, Shane Lloyd from Footprints Waipoua and also museum administration and finance manager, Colleen Glass, who made the observation that Ms Nelley was ‘all about people’.
“If you want to find Bet she can always be found in the museum talking to visitors, sharing her knowledge and passion for the place she loves,” said Ms Glass.

Caitlin’s Pentastic up to the challenge
Ruawai Kindergarten children join with new teacher Lisa Matthews (left) and head teacher Teresa Robertson to celebrate their new entrance way. It is called Whaia Te Maramatanga — which means ‘seek enlightenment’ and symbolises new beginnings for tamariki and their families. A blessing and celebration of the kindergarten’s second year of being in its new building will be held on May 28. Families in the community are welcome to join the fun.
Due to public demand, the closing date for entries in this year’s ‘Art N Tartan’ Wearable Art Awards at Waipu Museum has been extended until Friday, May 16, and artwork description should be in by May 23. The extension gives contestants more time to finalise their details and put in a few hours of extra work on their art piece. Demand and increased sponsorship means this highly successful show should be the best one yet.
Kenn Peralta from the winning Pentastic team makes a point during the BP Challenge at Dargaville High School. The winning team came up with the Pentastic, a pen with a microchip in it that keeps a permanent record of what it has written. Eight teams had their products and presentations assessed by a panel that included Kaipara District Council chief commissioner John Robertson and Dargaville High principal David Bargh.

Lower beach speed limits on the cards by Colin Patterson
Vehicles heading out onto Ripiro Beach next summer are likely to have to go slower with the likely implementation of a 30km an hour speed limit on sections of the beach adjacent to access ways.
Ripiro Beach is situated on the west coast between Aranga and Pouto. At 100km long it is New Zealand’s longest beach. Because it is a legal road, a 100km an hour speed limit applies on the entire length of the beach.
Following numerous reports of beach goers being endangered by vehicles being driven at speed, late last year the Kaipara District Council established a working party to look at setting new speed limits on the beach. The working party has representatives from the council, police, Northland Regional Council, Department of Conservation, local communities and iwi.
Council spokeswoman Barbara Ware says that following meetings with local residents, the working party has recommended that a 30km an hour limit be imposed within 1km of each of
six entrances to the beach at Aranga, Omamari, Baylys Beach, Mahuta, Glinks Gully and Pouto.
She says the recommendation that a lower limit only apply within 1km of the beach entrances was a result of police advice that applying a lower limit on the full extent of the beach would be difficult to enforce.
She says council officers are now drafting a bylaw which will then go out for public consultation. Public hearings are then likely to be held.
If the proposal goes through the full process, approval from both Police and the New Zealand Transport Agency will also be required before the limits can be changed.
Ms Ware says it is hoped that, if approved, the new limits will be in place from the start of the 2014/15 summer.
Museum farewells Bet Nelley“Marketing is something
that comes easy to Bet because of her love of the stories and people. Always willing to give her time freely to everyone. When you love something as much as Bet it is easy to promote it.
One of Bet’s favourite sayings is: “It is all about people.”
In her tenure, Ms Nelley oversaw the installation of the museum’s fire sprinkler system, the production of a DVD on the history of the kauri, and three books: Child of the Kauri, The Kauri Cameraman, and The Pioneering Life and the Kauri Tree. She also worked alongside scientist Jonathan Palmer with the Kauri Museum becoming the first museum in the world to be Carbonzero certified, and attaining Qualmark Enviro Gold.
Ms Nelley joined the museum as collections registrar in 1995 and three years later became collections manager.
In 2008 she was appointed to the position of chief executive officer, and in the same year was awarded a Museums Aotearoa Award for Individual Achievement.
Vehicles travelling on Ripiro Beach could soon be limited to 30km/h within 1km of any beach entrance

Custom car owners help Hospice by Colin Patterson
Some will be big and some will be loud but they’re all good looking and all will be raising money for a good cause.
They are the hot rods, vintage cars and other vehicles taking part on Hospice Kaipara’s Poker Car Run on Saturday. Pamela Barton one of the organisers says the event is open to all.
It is a drive from Dargaville to the Paparoa Hotel, with stops at Tokatoka, the Ruawai Rugby Club and at The Kauri Museum.
“It’s just a bit of fun. It’s not a race,” says Ms Barton.
At each of the stops participants pick up a card for a poker hand. “The person with the best hand wins a prize.”
Ms Barton says participants can register on the day, although she says organisers would prefer registrations in advance by calling Hospice Kaipara on 09 439 3330.
The event starts outside the Northern Wairoa Hotel with a safety briefing at 2pm. Vehicles head off at around 3pm and should arrive in Paparoa at about 5pm.
Ms Barton says Hospice Kaipara is grateful for the support of the Dargaville Rod and Custom Car Club, which invited the hospice to join its regular event and use it as a fundraiser.

One act wonders by Joanne Speechly
Otamatea Repertory Theatre will host the local round of TheatreFest this week.
Previously called the One Act Play Festival, Theatre New Zealand has rebranded the event as TheatreFest and it can now include all types of theatre, including one act plays and also excerpts from full-length plays and musical items.
The entries this year, include three original plays by Cal Lovell, Maura Flower and Deborah Steele and Dylan Hansen will make his directing debut with a farcical whodunnit.
The plays will be judged by accredited adjudicator, Lindsay Nash, and the audience can chose their favourite for the people’s choice award. Successful plays will go forward to perform at the regional and possibly national TheatreFest competitions.
Last year, ORT’s Joined at the Hip by British playwright, Joe Graham, was selected to perform at the national event at Toi Whakaari in Wellington and both Cal and Maura have previously won Best Script Awards for their writings.
Otamatea Repertory Theatre hosts TheatreFest as an annual event to encourage theatre in Northland.

Hearty arty initiative by Joanne Speechly
A community initiative in Paparoa is helping to ensure that no child goes hungry.
Community Connexions Arty Farties Incorporated is a charitable trust that not only teaches art and craft, as the name suggests, but also helps to feed 29 families in Paparoa and a great many more in Maungaturoto.
Paparoa’s community garden, which was established with the help of the Corrections Department and the community three years ago, is an integral part of ensuring that the two food banks remain well-stocked. Another food bank garden has recently been established on Hook Road.
“We want to be proactive in the community instead of inactive,” says volunteer Anne Shanks. “The
is about the kids and giving them the best start and it is working very well.
“We raise the money for the seeds but soil and time is donated on a regular basis. Because we bulk plant the gardens, we are able to help the food banks distribute produce to the people who need it.”
Anne says she is heartened by the way the community has gotten behind the project, adding that a baker in Wellsford, the Te Hana Orchard, several hatcheries and local shopkeepers all contribute to the food banks when they can.
People can contact Anne on 09 431 6229.

Milk is king at Maungaturoto School by Colin Patterson
Two years after Milk in Schools came to their school as a pilot, children at Maungaturoto School last week celebrated the completion of the programme’s nationwide rollout.
The occasion was highlighted when a Fonterra milk tanker turned up at school. Principal Shane Campbell says local Fonterra staff and farmers also heard from a few of the children who two years ago were part of a DVD that has gone nationwide explaining to children and teachers how the programme works and how milk benefits growing bones.
After a few games — including gumboot throwing — for the kids, lunch was served for the children and invited guests. And of course, it was accompanied by milk.
Fonterra’s programme manager Louise Aitken says the programme has proved a huge success and is now happening at 70% of the country’s primary schools. “This has been a real community effort and we want to thank everyone for their support. All of the Kiwi kids, school monitors, milkmen and staff have made Fonterra Milk for Schools possible. Our farmers, milkmen, and staff are really enjoying being involved in our communities in this special way.”

Milk is delivered in recyclable cartons, while Fisher and Paykel has supplied refrigerators to every school.
Mr Campbell says children at Maungaturoto School look forward to their daily milk. “We are really happy with how the programme is going and so are our children.”

The public are invited to come along and to hear her address. Winston Peters will be speaking at the June meeting and we are waiting for confirmation of the guest for our July meeting. The age limit for Grey Power membership has changed and now mature persons are all welcome. The Grey Power Federation of New Zealand Association advances, supports and protects the welfare and wellbeing of all New Zealanders, though more particularly the 50+. Pink it up by Joanne Speechly
Friday, May 23 is Pink Shirt Day — an annual, international event that encourages people to talk about bullying and ultimately, take action against it.
The concept was born in Nova Scotia, Canada in 2007 when a group of students decided to defend a peer who was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. In a show of solidarity, many children showed up for school the following day wearing pink shirts, thereby declaring that they cared about what was happening and were prepared to identify themselves as allies.
Organisers of PSD say the most important thing is for New Zealanders to work together to celebrate people’s difference and promote positive relationships. Their key messages are speak up, stand up and stop bullying.
Speaking up recognises that giving voice to a problem is the first step towards addressing it, which means having conversations with friends, family, teachers and the wider community to come up with new ideas and strategies to address bullying. It is also about asking for help when needed.
Standing together means creating allies and one way of doing this is for individuals, schools and organisations to show their support for PSD on Friday, May 23 by wearing pink. The Pink Shirt Day website offers some great tips on how to get involved www.pinkshirtday.org.nz/get-involved/.
Finally, the stop bullying message is often the simplest and the hardest. However, although it is not always easy to change behaviour, standing up and speaking up are a great start.

Health, protect and promote health through the public health system. Social Services, all persons in New Zealand to have access to, and be accurately informed of, all entitlements, initiatives or changes that affect them.
Essential Services, strongly supports the development of a sustainable, secure and equitable energy industry. Electricity in particular must be made an essential service. Matakohe community pushes for defibrillator by Colin Patterson
The community of Matakohe is likely to get a piece of vital lifesaving equipment, thanks in no small part to children at the local school.
The year seven and eight children are fundraising for a defibrillator by making pizzas and pies to order. Matakohe School principal Margie Hutchinson says the school is asking for orders and then the children will make the pies and pizzas under the supervision of parent Nadine Hau.
The push for a defibrillator is an initiative of the Matakohe Community Group. “It’s been discussed for a couple of years,” says group member Karen Weber. “A few of us did a First Aid course at the school where a defibrillator was demonstrated and we saw what it could do.”
A defibrillator is a device that compresses the heart to circulate blood to all vital organs, and also supplies oxygen to people who have stopped breathing. It can be a lifesaver for people who suffer cardiac arrest, especially in the period before emergency services arrive.
Mrs Weber says although training is available, defibrillators are simple to use. “They prompt you and tell you what to do next.”
She says the combined cost of a defibrillator and a secure storage unit is around $3000. The plan is for the defibrillator to be located in the foyer of the Matakohe Community Hall.
Fundraising has started with a potluck dinner for people in the area to be held in the hall on June 14. Mrs Weber says a local band will

Professional advice from your
local paint specialists.
Top tradespeople ask us for advice – you can too!
The industry has changed over the last couple of years in some major ways, but the core message from our local qualified tradespeople remains the same. Do your homework — only enlist the best — and make sure you are covered for any eventuality further down the track.
This is all the more pertinent now, with the knock-on implications of hiring unqualified and unlicensed workers being felt across the country. Landmark cases in Christchurch and Auckland have revealed that those who have illegal additions and ‘suspect’ plumbing and wiring may struggle with insurance claims — or even with selling their home. Buyers are becoming more canny, and as councils crack down on non-compliant ‘cowboys’ the onus is definitely on the customer to ensure a job well done.
It all starts with a simple question. Many Kiwis are quite shy about asking to see trades people’s qualifications, or even asking for references before they allow them to take the saw and hammer to their biggest asset.
The escutcheon of a top trade organisation like the Certified Builders, or the endorsement of a trade body such as those which govern glaziers or plumbers, goes a long way to ensuring peace of mind. That’s not to say that those tradies who aren’t part of an over-arching organisation are any less skilled and qualified.
Top tradespeople offer peace of mindBuilding may be booming in the South Island as christchurch rises like the proverbial phoenix. But renovations, upgrades, refurbishments and repairs are all go here in the Kaipara as well, as homeowners rush to beat winter storms and chills.

In all cases, ask about the qualification, certification and history of the folks you’re dealing with.
Another vital point arises when the job you want to undertake is a big one. Some people are now hiring project managers for residential builds and add-ons. Years ago, a project manager would only have been used on a large construction site — but today a PM’s seal of approval means that they have vetted all subcontractors. Hiring a top builder in the same role offers potentially even greater benefits — if your builder has full faith in the subcontractors he needs to see the job through, you can bet he will have their numbers on call to make redress should anything go wrong later on! As the PM or builder in charge of a project is responsible for any
flaws, a process of natural selection is already starting to take place, with poor quality ‘subbies’ simply not receiving work, should they not be up to the overseeing authority’s standards.
To put it simply — the rules now state that it is illegal to knowingly hire an unqualified tradesperson to work on your home. Paperwork must be kept above board, or problems can arise when trying to value or sell your home. And if work undertaken doesn’t come with the correct certification, insurance companies may be unwilling to cover your home against some kinds of accident and disaster. Better to be safe than sorry, then, and hire the ‘good guys’ first time round!

Honda to showcase in Dargaville by Andy Bryenton
By now many readers will have seen Honda’s award winning ‘hands’ advertisement on television — the quirky, animated story which literally unfolds the Japanese company’s progress through the years.
The message is simple, even though the animation is beguilingly complex — curiosity and innovation have driven Honda to dream big, and to achieve in equal measure.
Now the chance to sample the wares of the international auto giant is coming to Dargaville residents, with a ‘road trip’ of exclusive test drives scheduled to touch down in the riverside town. It’s an opportunity for Kaipara folk to reconnect with Honda’s product range, sampling the fruits of their research and development labours. And it’s also a chance to see how far automotive technology has come, with Honda quietly confident that they have, at the present moment, a world-beating range of vehicles on offer.
First out of the gates will be Honda’s flagship sports utility, the CR-V. Every
effort has been made with this latest generation of the popular SUV to combine safety with comfort, power with precision, in a recipe which challenges European elite marques like Audi’s Q series and BMW’s X5.
The first impression of the CR-V’s fourth generation sets the tone — because, unlike the fussy over styling of some competitors, this machine appears slick and consummate, with a bold stance and clean lines. High and roomy, the glasshouse tapers back to accentuate the CR-V’s roofline, blending a subtle door crease with a neat cluster of tail lamps. Inside, luxury levels multiply, and the addition of a multimedia touch screen of generous proportions enhances the feeling of command sitting in the drivers seat.
The key to this vehicle is not mud-slinging, hardcore off road power. Like the Accord, Honda’s SUV is subtle and compelling, offering space for the whole family and a five star safety rating for peace of mind.
Honda tout the CR-V as having the ability to transform from a sleek executive sedan to a weekend adventure machine, and this would appear to be no idle boast, with ample power delivered by a 2.4L petrol engine mated to either a modern CVT or manual six-speed box. This is one of the legendary i-Vtec series, successor to the original Vtec engines which powered Honda’s flagship Prelude and Accord ranges in the 1990s. It’s only gotten better with time.
Combine this performance with a smart selection of AWD options, and the new CR-V is well worth a test drive. Honda will be bringing their latest evolution of the SUV to Dargaville this Friday, and in successive weeks, and they invite anyone who wants to experience the CR-V to book an appointment for an obligation-free demonstration.
Curiosity, after all, is the driving force behind Honda’s innovations. So if you’re curious about what Honda have accomplished, make a booking to find out first hand.

DRIVE SAFE THIS WINTER
52 Beach Road, Dargaville – Ph 09 439 6395BR Vincent LTD
Putting winter auto worries on ice by Andy Bryenton
Winter is here, with thick fog, slippery tarmac and driving rain delivering a triple-threat to motorists in the Kaipara.
But there’s an easy way to make sure your journeys are safe as you hit the road over the next few months — a little bit of pre-planning goes a long way towards ensuring you arrive alive when the weather turns foul.
First port of call should be where the rubber meets the road — your tyres are all that stands between you and a nasty accident in slippery, wet conditions. The tread of your tyres is designed to eject water and prevent hydroplaning, so tyres with worn tread are a literal killer. Your local tyres pros can also check wear patterns, tyre pressure and alignment to make sure your car stays on a nimble footing.
The electrical systems of your car take a hammering in the cold, with window demisters, aircon, heaters, and those all-important lights and fog lamps playing a vital role. The health of your alternator and battery are key to this whole system — and remember, modern vehicles need power for their computerised ABS and traction control systems too.
Your battery has to be up to the challenge — with plenty of all important cranking amps to spare. Nothing’s worse than getting ready for work on a cold morning and then finding that the car won’t start!
Brakes and suspension help you to tackle emergency situations such as having to stop suddenly in poor conditions. For these, and for everything under the hood, its a good idea to book a pre winter service, giving your car a clean bill of health and making sure you don’t break down in the pouring rain!
Another thing to consider is security. Winter is the number one time of year for keys to get lost, or electronic alarm fobs and transponders to get wet. If you don’t have a copy of these ‘keyless’ technologies, you could be stranded — with a huge replacement bill. A good auto locksmith can make you a ‘clone’ before it’s too late, saving big hassles in the long run.
Driving in winter conditions can be a little daunting, but it need not be unsafe. With a vehicle that’s been serviced and
DRIVE TO THE CONDITIONS
ROAD SAFETY
upgraded where it’s needed, people happily head off to work in conditions of ice, snow and monsoon rain, all around the world. Here in the Kaipara
our winters are mild by comparison, but a little automotive smart thinking can still mean the difference between calm confidence and dismal disaster.

Pink Ribbon breakfast time by Joanne Speechly
The Pink Ribbon Breakfast is back with a number of events planned around the Kaipara to support the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation.
Lorraine Downes, NZBCF ambassador and former Miss Universe, is the face of this year’s campaign, after her mother was treated for cancer. “Research is vital for better treatments to improve survival of this very complex cancer, and ultimately for prevention,” says Lorraine.
“The foundation is funding several world-class projects right here in New

wine, dine & entertainmentKick-starting Kiwi music successMay marks the return of New Zealand Music month, and across the Kaipara there are plenty of opportunities to appreciate the wealth of talent on display.
As winter weather bites, try this spicy, summery dish from winterless Thailand — stir-fry chicken with cashew nuts.
From garage bands getting their first break to artists high in the charts here and overseas, this region has music to cater to every taste.
In just the last year we’ve seen big acts like Soljah, Katchafire and the Black Seeds rock Kaipara venues. Local up and comers 5K have forged a reputation for themselves doing the pub circuit at the Northern Wairoa Hotel and the Maungaturoto Hotel, while local Jazz veterans the Joe Carberry Trio have delighted patrons at the Aratapu Tavern’s New Orleans style mardi gras. The avant-garde acts at the Funky Fish have also proven supremely popular, as was the second annual Tokafest at the Tokatoka Tavern.
But this is just the beginning, and local venue owners are always keen to foster local talent. John Collins of the Northern Wairoa Hotel echoes the sentiments of many entertainment entrepreneurs in the region when he encourages budding bands, djs and
singers to come forward and audition. Huge names from Kiwi music royalty — like Dragon, Split Enz and Hello Sailor — all cut their teeth in local pubs and clubs, and NZ Music Month is the perfect time to step up and play.
All this month venues across the region will be featuring live music from Kiwi bands, so get out and show your support!
Authentic Thai recipe
Cube 500gm boneless chicken breast. Heat one tbsp of oil and add a teaspoon of crushed fresh garlic.
Add the chicken and cook until golden brown (3 mins).
Add a selection of chopped fresh veges (onion, capsicum, broccoli, courgette, carrot etc — anything fresh and healthy for that 5 plus a day!) with 2 tbsp of water.
Add in a teaspoon of sugar, a squirt of tomato sauce (yes — Watties kiwi tomato sauce!) and a little chicken
seasoning powder / chicken stock. Stir in chili paste to taste (some like it hot!), 2 teaspoons of oriental oyster sauce and a dash of soy sauce.
Cook, stirring constantly, on high heat for 7 mins.
Garnish with cashew nuts and freshly chopped spring onions, and serve on a bed of boiled, fluffy jasmine rice.
Recipe brought to you from the ‘secret cookbook’ of Raan A Haan Thai Aroi Dee restaurant.

I have recently arrived to the area from Switzerland to join my partner. During my life I’ve cycled the world visiting very poor places, large metropolitan cities and even places where crime and poverty prevail. Never once have I been the target of theft.
I have volunteered to coach the Dargaville youth Soccer team, offering my time, soccer knowledge and help. This Saturday was my first away match with the team so I cycled to town and locked my bike to a wooden post. Members of the team then took me to Whangarei and back to Dargaville by early afternoon. This will be the first and, now apparently the last time I will leave my bike unattended in town. While I was away somebody broke the wooden post in order to steal my bike.
I really enjoy contributing and helping the local community and I would do this anywhere in the world. It’s very disappointing and frustrating to me and I guess embarrassing to my friends and the soccer club that this would happen.
My ambition was to organise a cycle group that would meet on a regular basis, to enjoy rides with locals and promote the sport.
My good impression of Dargaville has now been tainted and my motivation to help very much reduced.

Local author weaves tale of hope by Andy Bryenton
It’s a hard road from first rough draft to publishing for any novelist. But when the subject of your masterpiece draws on a tumultuous past, the process of editing and recounting events takes on an even more personal aspect.
It has indeed been a long and winding road to publication for Kaipara author Janet Balcombe. Her new book ‘Take a Walk on the Wild Side’ details events from her own past, a self-confessed trip to ‘rock bottom’, and the means by which she found new hope and strength.
Already garnering popular support and great reviews on worldwide bookseller’s site Amazon.com, ‘Take a Walk on the Wild Side’ has found a wide audience and a readership who sympathise with Janet’s tribulations.
Online critics have called it “A very raw and human story of redemption. A must read for anyone caught in addiction and for those already healed.” Now those who eschew the modern Kindle and iPad for traditional paper and bindings can also get their hands on a copy
of Janet’s work, with an official New Zealand launch date set for the 17th of May.
The author herself will be at Ellecee’s Cafe, Ruawai from 11am to 1pm, so it will be possible to grab a copy or even have it signed before enjoying coffee and brunch.
Above and beyond high hopes for the sale of this breakout personal memoir, Janet hopes that others will find guidance as well as a gripping story in ‘Take a Walk on the Wild Side’, which deals frankly and openly with issues such as drug addiction, adultery and grief, tracing a pathway from darkness and into hope.
‘Take a Walk on the Wild Side’ is available via Amazon, or in hard copy via www.wildside.com.mx for $29.95.
