KARUNA INSIGHT DESIGN Karuna ‘Insight design’ was specifically developed to demonstrate sustainable land management and low impact living as a way to heal ourselves, others and the planet.

The project is located in Shropshire, within an area of outstanding natural beauty on the upper fringes of the Long Mynd.

This 18 acre project designed through ‘Insight’, serves as a permaculture and forest gardening demonstration site. Previously low quality, overgrazed fields have been transformed into (probably) the largest forest garden in the country. Insight design is an uncommon approach using past experience and intuition as the main source of inspiration for action.

LearningVisitors, students and volunteers explore and experience some of the possibilities that exist to help revitalise the British countryside and to help the nation accommodate, feed and power itself in the most positive way.

Forest gardenAs a small family of four we planted an extremely diverse mix of over 10,000 trees, starting in 2006. Imagine, we planted and mulched 4,000 trees in a single season! Trees include traditional fruit trees and nitrogen fixing trees, plus there’s many other plants and herbs, thus laying the foundations for the practice of forest gardening, using permaculture principles as a guide.

“Karuna is a Sanskrit word meaning compassion.”

“On site energy at Karuna comes from wind & the sun. We grow as much of our own organic food as possible. Keeping ourselves fed with a staple diet all year round.”
