Where are you now? Where is your life
today? Where is your business today?
How does it rate on a scale of 1 – 10—1
being miserable and 10 being euphoric?
If you were to go back five short years
and think of what you had envisaged
your life (and your business) to be to-
day, would you say you have everything
you wanted (Be honest)?
Have you today achieved every-thing that you wanted and thought of five years ago?
Most people, after spending a bit of
time reflecting and being honest with
themselves, come to an unfortunate
and rather shocking truth. Most have
hoped to be in a better place compared
to where they are today. By not setting
themselves up with a target, they have
planned to fail.
What about you. Did you even think about setting a target for where you are today?
Don’t feel bad, you are not alone
(though that doesn’t make it better). It
may sound ridiculous, but most people
are inadvertently planning to fail. Why
do I say that? I mean, you don’t hear
people coming up to you and saying,
“Oh by the way, I have just finished
planning how I can fail this year and do
a good job at it.” You would never hear
someone actually say that, yet nine
times out of ten, we know of people
who have ended up getting that failed
result. Why is that?
Although many never plan to fail, they
fail to plan the route ahead. They fail
to plan their road map, their strategy
in order to win the game. Most people
spend more time doing their hair in
the morning or planning their sum-
mer holidays than thinking about what
they truly want out of life. By failing to
plan they have, with complete inten-
tion, planned to fail. Could this be true
of someone you know? Could this be
you? Most people have a “sit and wait
approach”. That is their plan and it cer-
tainly isn’t a winning one. Others have
a last minute approach to things. They
may have thought very briefly of a five

ForwardSmarterThis is a great time of the year to take a moment and think about how you would like this year to work out for you moving forward.
It is a good time to reflect on all that was, all that could have been and all that should have been. It’s a time to look at what resources were utilised best and how much more could have been done. It may be tough to make a good judgement call when in the mo-ment, but looking back now, can you say it with all honesty, that more could have been done?

year plan because it was the in thing to
do, but only decide to implement ev-
erything in the last quarter of the final
year. All with the hope that they scrap
through their five year goals mark. I am
not only talking about planning for the
big things. Planning is important for all
aspects of your life and business—from
the big goals to the smaller, day-to-day
occurrences.
I’ve found that when I am coaching
and consulting clients, they (all) realise
how much more they could have done,
how much more efficient they could
have operated, how much talent they
allowed to go to waste and how much
better they could have planned for their
growth, prosperity and dealing with
challenging situations. In short, they
all look back and see how much money
they have left on the table. They see
gaps in where they failed to make the
most of situations by not having had
and worked planned for say develop-
ing their people to become resourceful
when times are tough.
I will make an audacious statement and
challenge you by saying that the same
applies to you. If you reflect back on
the year that you have just had, there
are areas where you have left money on
the table- money that could have been
yours but was left on the table.
Now you can spend time crying over
spilled milk, or you can learn from your
past in order to operate and move for-
ward smarter.
For if you continue to do the same things
over and over again without change,
the picture will remain the same. This
year will just be like the last. You can
hope and wish for it to be different, but
it won’t. As common sense would dic-
tate, for things to change, your (and the
individuals that make up your teams)
thoughts, decision making process and
actions must change.
Plan in advance. Plan for what you
want to achieve this year and even five
years from now. Start taking the ac-
tions today. You can’t achieve what you
want in five years, if you leave it all to
the last quarter of the last year.
Think like a Winner. Plan like a Winner. Decide like a Winner and Act like a Winner.
This is the time to begin moving for-
ward smarter.
This is the time to make your plans and
work on it.
