Introduction and History Afterthetragiclossoftheirbeloveddaughter,Danielle,RickLennertandAdrianneDartnalldecidedtospend3to4monthseachyeartravelingtoS.E.Asiatoassistchildrenandfamilieslivinginpoverty.ForthepastfourteenyearstheyhavevolunteeredinIndia,Myanmar/Burma,Cambodia,VietnamandontheMyanmar/Thailandborder,helpingtocreatebetterlivesforchildrenandfamilies.Thepainandsufferingtheysawinspiredthemtomakeadifferenceinchildren’slives.Byraisingfundsfromfriends,foundationsandschoolstheyareabletoprovide:clean

drinkingwater,schools,educationalsupplies,medicine,clinics,aswellassupportlocalgrassrootorganizationsworkingtirelesslytoprovidehealth,education,trainingandhousingforwomen,childrenandfamilies.In2004KidsInternationalDevelopmentSociety(K.I.D.S.)wasformed.Asaresultofmuchhardwork,adedicatedBoardofDirectorsandagroundswellofsupportK.I.D.S.becameaCanadianRegisteredCharitableOrganizationin2009.Itisourbeliefthatwemustworkinpartnershipwitheachcommunity,familyandorganizationtoassesstheirneedsfromtheirownviewpointandreality.Wecanthenprovidethenecessaryresources,materialsandsupportthatcanimprovetheirqualityoflife.Theworkweareabletodoisonlypossiblebecauseofthededicatedindividualsweworkwithinthesecommunitiesandtheincrediblegenerosityofourdonors,boardmembersandvolunteers.

Message From the Co‐Founders and President K.I.D.S.continuestoassistchildren,familiesandcommunitieslivinginCambodia,andMyanmar.Ourfocusistosupporteducation,cleandrinkingwater,medicaltreatment,safehousingandvocationaltraining.K.I.D.S.isdedicatedtoworkingwithlocalorganizations,individualsandcommunitiesinbringingtheseessentialservicestothoselivinginisolatedareasaswellasurbansettings.Thankstothecompassionandgenerosityofourdonorswecontinuetoimprovethelivesofchildrenandhelpbreakthecycleofpoverty.Eachyearwefeelveryfortunatetoworkinpartnershipwithincrediblepeoplebothhereandtherewhoarededicatedtochangingchildren’slivesforthebetter.BesidesindividualswhodonatetoK.I.D.SwealsoappreciateotherorganizationsthatsupportK.I.D.S.ThispastyearCompassionateEyeFoundationagainsupportedK.I.D.S.inbringingcleandrinkingwatertotwoschoolsandgivinghundredsofchildrenthegiftofcleandrinkingwaterandincreasinghealthandwellbeing.Wethankthemforworkingwithustoassistruralpopulationswhoareverypoorandunderserved.WecontinuetoappreciatetheworkwedowiththeCWAsiaFundinbringingneededsuppliesandsupporttoTheAngkorHospitalforChildreninCambodiaandMedicalActionMyanmarinMyanmar.Weworkveryhardtoassessandaddresstheneedsofcommunitiesandworkdiligentlytoensurethatthefundsdonatedaremanagedandusedethicallyandresponsibly.K.I.D.SalsoworkslocallyinCanadatoraiseawarenessaboutpovertyandtheneedsofchildrenandfamilieslivingindevelopingcountriesbygivingpresentationsontheworkofK.I.D.S.andotherorganizations.ThispastyearwepartneredwiththeChildandYouthCareprogramatVancouverIslandUniversity.ThestudentsvolunteeredthroughtheirsocialjusticeclubtoassistkidsinCambodiawithsolarlightsandbikes.Anotherlocalhighschool,JohnBarsby,raisedfundsthroughtheirsocialjusticeclubtoassistwithschoolsupplies.Thanksgoouttotheteachers,boardmembersandparents

whoworkedwithustoraisefundsforK.I.D.S.andhelpraiseawarenessandcompassionforchildrenlivinginpoverty.WecontinuetohaveourannualWineandWrapfundraiserandthisisonlymadepossiblebythenumerouscommunitybusinesses,artists,artisans,boardmembersandvolunteerswhodonatetheirtime,skillsandproducts.AspecialthanksgoestoRBCDominionSecuritiesandWestJetfortheirgeneroussponsorshipanddonations.AsweheadintothisnextyearwewanttosincerelythankourdedicatedBoardofDirectorsandvolunteersandespeciallyourdonorsforbeingapartofK.I.D.Sandmakingsuchadifferenceinthelivesofsomany.Withappreciation,RickLennertandAdrianneDartnallCo‐founders

Projects and Program Highlights  

Samnang Home for Girls, Cambodia Somnang House was formed seven years ago to provide a safe, stable and loving home for 14 girls who were orphaned, abused or abandoned. The girls live together with a dedicated house mother/social worker, cook and four dogs. They attend both Khmer and English school, practise their cultural dancing and learn essential life skills.They are not only living a better life they are thriving. SafeHomeforBoysK.I.D.S.alsohelpstosupportahomeforboys.Thehomeprovides15boys,ages5to20yearsofage.Theseboyshavebeenabandonedororphanedandhaveexperiencedverydifficultlives.Theynowhaveanopportunitytoreceiveaneducationandliveinasafeandcaringenvironment.

SupportingWomenandChildren,CambodiaIntheN.E.areaofCambodiaK.I.D.S.providessupportfortheStungTrengWomen’sDevelopmentCentre,wherewomenareabletodevelopskillsinweavingandbreakthecycleofpovertyforthemselvesandtheirchildren.Thisempoweringprogramsupportswomenwithhealthcare,child‐careandahomeforwomenandchildrenthatareindiresituations.K.I.D.S.providesthesalariesfortheteachersoftheon‐sitekindergartenprogramwhere50childrencanbetakencareofandlearnwhiletheirmotherswork.K.I.D.S.alsobuiltandfundsasmallschoolinSreyPohvillagebehindtheweavingcooperativewhereanother40childrenage3to7canlearnandreceiveanutritiouslunch.Thechildrenareprovidedwithschoolsupplies,clothing,nurturingandhealthcare.

TheLakeClinic,CambodiaK.I.D.ScontinuestosupportTheLakeClinicCambodia,whichbringshealthcaretopeoplelivinginremotefloatingvillagesontheTonleSapLakeandalongtheStungSenRiver.OvertheyearsK.I.D.S.hasbuiltafloatingclinic,providedsupportforotherfloatingclinics,fundeddoctor’ssalaries,helpedwithfuelforthemedicalteamstransportationandsupportedvillagehealthvolunteers.ThispastyearK.I.D.Sprovidedfundsformaintenanceoftheclinicsandfuelforthemedicalboatthatassiststhesededicatedteamsofdoctors,nursesandmidwivestotravellongdistancestoprovidecaretothoselivinginisolatedareas.Withoutthisoutstandingprogramthepeopleonthelakeandtheriverwouldfacesufferingandlackofaccesstohealthcareandmedicine.

MoatKlaElementarySchool,KIDSbuiltFouryearsagoK.I.D.Sbuiltaschoolforthe300childrenlivinginMoatKlavillageontheTonleSapLake.K.I.D.Sprovidessupportforthisfloatingschoolinavarietyofways.Thisyearwewereabletohaveasmallboatbuiltsotheteacherscouldcomeandgofromtheschoolaswellasanenginefortheirlargerboatwhichtakestheteacherstodistrictmeetingsandenablesthemtogohomeonweekends,astheyliveontheschoolduringtheweek.Wealsopurchasedschoolsupplies,uniformsandlifejacketssothelittleonescangettoschoolsafely.

AngkorHospitalforChildren,SiemReap,CambodiaK.I.D.Scontinuestosupportthisoutstandingchildren’shospital.InpartnershipwiththeC.W.AsiaFund,wewereabletosupport thehospitalbyfundingmedicalstaffsalariesandmedicalsupplies.BikesandLightsK.I.D.S.providesbothbicyclesandsolarlightsformanychildreninCambodia.Mostfamiliesdonothaveelectricityinruralareas,solarlightsallowchildrenandyouthtostudy.Bikesallowsthemtogettoschool.

MedicalActionMyanmarK.I.D.S,inpartnershipwithCWAsiaFund,supportsthisimportantandlifesavingprogrambyprovidingfundsforsalaries,andmedicineforverypoorchildrenandfamilies.Theprogram’sfocusesonHIV/AIDS,TB,MalariaandMalnutrition

CleanDrinkingWaterManychildreninruralCambodiahaveeithernoaccesstocleandrinkingwaterorareforcedtodrinkwatercontainingironandarsenic;whichoftencausesthemtobesick.ThisyearK.I.D.Saddedtwomoreschoolstothelistofschoolswesupportwithcleanwater.Over2000studentsandtheirfamiliesnowhaveaccesstocleandrinkingwater.AspecialthankstoK.I.D.Ssupporters:CompassionateEyeFoundationandtheJetter’sthroughMarinCommunityFoundation,fortheirassistancewiththesetwoprojects.

YouthEducationSponsorshipProgram,CambodiaK.I.D.S. continues to sponsor 40 children and young adults so they can attain various levels of education, from primary school to university. K.I.D.S. provides: school supplies, school fees, bicycles, english lessons, solar lights and other needed support to ensure these very poor children are able to attend school and do not have to work as child labourers. SupportforSchoolsK.I.D.Sgoalistoprovideschoolwiththebasicssothatchildrenhaveachancetobesuccessfulinlearning.Weworkwithruralschoolstoensurethattheyhavecleandrinkingwater,schoolsupplies,libraries(wherebookscanbefreelyreadandborrowed),communitygardensandfoodprogramsforthosechildrenthatareathighfoodsecurityrisk.Thisyearwealsosupportedahighschoolwithacomputerlabthatwillassistyoungstudentstolearncomputersandimprovetheiropportunitytoattenduniversity.
