We buy things.

When those items are no longer needed,

we throw them away.

What inis

our trash?

Our trash consists of…

• Paper

• Plastics

• Metal

• Glass

• Grass & yard waste

• Food

• Clothes & textiles

Getting Rid of Trash

70% of our trash is taken to landfills.

Tricloroethylene (a cancer-causing chemical), and over ten toxic gases are present in landfills.

Burying household garbage in the ground poisons our ground water.

Landfills pose enormous dangers to our health.

Toxic chemicals from landfills contaminate the ground and water sources.

Dangerous gas and chemicals from landfills contaminate our air.

Why don’t we just burn the trash? If landfills are such a

problem….

Toxins from incinerators are directly absorbed into the air we breathe.

Every day at P169...

we add to the problem.

• Every month, we throw out enough glass bottles to fill up the Empire State Building. All of these glass jars are recyclable.

•The energy saved from recycling 1 glass bottle can run a 100-watt lightbulb for 4 hours. It also causes 20% less air pollution and 50% less water polution than when a new bottle is made.

It takes a long time for garbage to decompose. An aluminum can that is thrown away today will still be an aluminum can 500 years from now.

•Recycling 1 aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for 3 hours.

•To make each week’s Sunday’s newspapers, 500,000 trees must be cut down. •Each ton of recycled paper can save 17 trees…380 gallons of oil…7000 gallons of water…and 4000 kilowatts of energy.
