Dante’s Life

• Born May 14 to June 13, 1265 in Florence, Italy.

Dante’s Life

• His family had loyalty to the Guelphs.

• Factions supporting the Pope and the Holy Roman Emperor, respectively.

• Emerged from the struggle for power between the Papacy and the Holy Roman Empire, which had arisen with the Investiture Conflict.

Guelphs and Ghibellines conflict

• After the Guelphs finally defeated the Ghibellines in 1289, Guelphs began to fight among themselves.

• By 1300 the Florentine Guelphs had divided into the Black Guelphs and the White Guelphs.

• the Blacks supporting the Pope and the Whites wanting more freedom from Rome.

Guelphi Bianchi & Guelphi Neri

• A new Black Guelph government was installed

• supporters of the White Guelphs, were exiled in 1302 when the Black Guelphs took control of Florence.

• Dante exiled from Florence and ordered to pay a large fine.

to Gemma Donati.• His children are Jacopo, Pietro, Giovanni, Gabrielle

Alighieri, and Antonia.• Antonia later became a nun, taking the name Sister
