WHAT DO CELLS DO?October-26-2010

ENERGY ENERGY ENERGYEver wonder why you can’t fall asleep after

eating a bag of sugar before bed???

Your cells are CONSTANTLY PRODUCING ENERGY!

Ever wonder why you have to pee in the middle of the night after you drink a glass of milk before bed?

Your cells are CONSTANTLY PRODUCING WASTE!!!

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING ABOUT CELLS IS:

1. Cells produce energy2. Cells produce waste3. Cells are vital for life.

They literally DO EVERYTHING!

WHERE IS THE ENERGY PRODUCED?Where is the energy produced again?

Where is the waste stored?

Energy is required for ALL CELLULAR ACTIVITY related to digestion, transport, repair of damage, and reproduction.

Plant cells have chloroplasts which contain chlorophyll which is in charge of converting carbon dioxide, water, and nutrients from the soil into SUGAR!

But Miss. Corelli? How in the world do food/gases and waste get in and out of the cell!?!?!?

THE FLOW OF MATERIALS IN AND OUT OF THE CELLWhen it is wet and windy outside, what type of

clothing would you choose to wear?a. cottonb. plasticc. denim

Your choice will effect whether or not you will also be wet and cold. Certain materials will allow water and air to pass through easily, whereas others will not.

THE FLOW OF MATERIALS IN AND OUT OF THE CELLWhen it is wet and windy outside, what type of

clothing would you choose to wear?a. cotton permeableb. plastic impermeablec. denim permeable

None of the choices are correct.

Since plastic is impermeable, it may keep you nice and dry, but you will be very hot and sweaty inside.

You need a material that will let air out, but keep you dry.

Such material is SELECTIVELY PERMEABLE.

The cell wall/cell membrane is SELECTIVELY PERMEABLE.

Look at this strainer.

The cell wall and cell membranes will allow in certain substances in and others not:

Water Sodium (salt)Oxygen HydrogenCarbohydrates Potassium(SUGARS)

What other examples can you come up with?

MOVEMENTThe movement of substances in and out of the

cell is called: cellular transport.;

1. Diffusion: movement of gas/liquid particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration. (recall the bottle experiment)

2. Osmosis: diffusion involving water particles. This is more noticeable in plants.

DIFFUSION

OSMOSIS

CELL LAB ON THURSDAY!Please bring in a carrot stick/celery stick.

Exam questions:

1. Describe permeable in your own words. 2. Use the term “selectively permeable” in a

sentence that demonstrates its meaning. 3. When you put your groceries away, you forgot

to put the celery in the refrigerator. When you found it on the counter, it was soft and limp. How could osmosis help the celery? Explain what you would do and why it would work.

HOW DOES THE CELL MAKE ENERGY?Where does all the particles go after they are

in the cell?

The energy is made in the _________________
