LANDFORMSLandforms are parts of Earth not covered with water. Some landforms are high; others are low.

PLAINA plain is a wide area of low, flat land.

PLATEAUA plateau is a flat land on a high place.

VALLEY

A valley is a low land surrounded by hills or mountains.

MOUNTAINA mountain is a high landform.

It has a steep shape.

HILLA hill is also a high landform but lower than a mountain.

It has a smooth or a round top.

MOUNTAIN RANGEA mountain range is a row or chain of mountains.

They appear to be connected to one another.

VOLCANOA volcano is a mountain with an opening on top. The opening is called a crater.

Hot materials from inside of Earth come out when a volcano erupts.

ISLANDAn island is an area of land surrounded by water.

It may be small or large.

PENINSULAA peninsula is a long and narrow part of a land that extends out to the sea.

A peninsula is not totally surrounded by water.
