Open space & transit near campus
OHSU as a continuation of Portland open space network
Oregon Health and Science University is planning to expand its medical school to the South Waterfront District along Portland’s waterfront. The campus will be-come home to education and research spaces for the school. The location will be a new addition to the Portland open space network with the expanded waterfront park connecting downtown through the campus and on to the South Waterfront District. The campus concept links all transportation modes on its edges into a central space. Within the campus interior will be smaller divisions of spaces that will have unique programs and forms. With all the parking in structured decks, the opportunity arises for a purely pedestrian campus and a unique space for the city as a whole to use.

Plaza meadow creates a pleasant campus environment and visual connections to the waterfront.
Light rail and transit station connects OHSU to the cities transit systems.
Promenade connection to future development
Strong connections are made to the Willamette greenway and surrounding contexts.
The campus promenade can access all open and social spaces as well as each building.

Large scale stormwater garden to treat water from two buildings and nearby campus spaces
The main plaza is the primary social space with connections to student functions within the buildings and the other campus landscapes.
Vehicle drop off loop allows cars to access the campus parking garages and for people to enter coming from the North.
Using the basic campus organizational diagrams the spaces between programmed buildings can take form. Outdoor social spaces for use by users or the public are situated near highly active building programs of each campus building. The campus promenade creates a major spine through all spaces and connects the light rail station and the bus station. Each of the major spaces off the promenade such as the plaza, meadow and grove are interlinked both in form and materials. The waterfront terraces provide opportunity for stormwater treatment as well as access to the waterfront park below.

Building the Elements of Industry CityNew York City is seeking to host a world clean tech expo in 2014. The expo will feature new technologies from science, industry, and as well as specific industries. The focus of this project is on Industry City, an expo area with 11 pavilions that include agricultural, chemical, transportation and other related industries. The challenge is fitting 1.1 million SF of expo pavilions onto vacant land for the clean tech expo. Finding suitable sites for the expo pavilions is the first step. This competition also looked at water as the 6th burrow of the city, and a potential transportation system the uses the river and bay for everyday use.
Industry City is designed with 10 pavilions for the expo that represent clean technologies: energy, agriculture, building, water, transportation, waste, chemical, textile, consumer, and info tech. Each pavilion type was organized into how they related to each other. The program diagramed was assigned colors and given 3-D form to create the framework for the design.

Within the network the connection to existing modes of transportation helped strengthen the concept of this system.
At each end of the transit network are large floating water hubs that allow water craft to dock and transfer passengers, each hub also contains educational, community, and ecological functions.

I-5 High Speed Rail
Visioning The High Speed Rail DistrictHigh speed rail will change the way Oregon moves. Looking at a possible scenario of high speed rail lines on the I-5 corridor suitable sites in Albany were found by creating desired criteria for a station and ranking candidate sites. The most suitable site within Albany for this project is a greenfield in an industrial area. The majority of the studio focused on this selection process, with the end focused on creating a vision of how a HSR district could work. The district had a few challenges such as connecting to neighborhoods and integrating a station district into a semi-agricultural area. The requirements for an HSR station are parking facilities, access to the station for cars and transit, and ample public space to create a social/transit hub.

Garden station is built around an agricultural framework for food production and emphasize the farm aesthetic of the original site.
Along I-5 are the dense housing clusters and the greenway buffer strip that connects the district to the HSR station.
Within the mixed use area are gathering spaces and smaller squares in between the buildings. Small pedestrian alleys connect these spaces to the main streets.
Zingonia Italy is a modernist new-town that suffers from a lack of central district and town image. Looking at the main street called Corso Europa this workshop, a small team of students designed a master plan and vision for a denser social district. The street is plagued with problems such as aging industrial buildings, lack of lighting, no eyes on the street, and an auto dominated space that is not appealing towards pedestrians. The vision looks at creating more opportunities for livable streets while building on existing infrastructure.

Street/Urban Design
The human scale between buildings takes inspiration from traditional Italian cities with strong pedestrian market & retail districts
At the terminal end of the street is where the dense commercial and mixed use zones are located, each with small pedestrian streets and courtyards
Life Between Buildings
Dense Core The street Corso Europa incorporates separated modes of transit for safety. Traffic circles area modeled after existing ones found in modernist Zingonia, and serve as nodes for ease of circulation
Multi-Modal Street
Multi-family courtyard villas
The plaza is the center of the district and serves as a confluence of the agricultural context and the urban fabric of the district
The New PlazaThe district lowers in density as it borders the nearby farm fields. A park serves as a recreational and transi-tion space between city and country.
Townhouses and traditional sub-urban development border the street and create a different feel to the district in terms of density of activities.

Raleigh Union Station
Located in Raleigh’s warehouse district Raleigh Union Station will serve as a true transit campus with all the amenities and experiences of modern transit hubs. The warehouse district is envisioned to be Raleigh’s premiere space for innovation and vibrant urban culture. Union station will play a critical in this transformation and as a catalyst for transit related changes in the Triangle region. The project has four major components; station building, parking/circulation, civic plaza, and stormwater garden. All the spaces on site have similar design elements to create a cohesive, functional, and beautiful design. The project also represents a collaborative process and very positive acceptance by the city and public. Cities like Raleigh are now looking inward to the previous under used spaces for transformation. Large projects like this one speak to a future of sustainability and vibrant cities.

Raleigh’s next public space will be highly programmable and functional. The linear paving pattern is a surface on which several large seating elements will float. Great attention is paid to the design and form of these benches as industrial inspired elements for the enjoyment of the users. The long serpentine bench will be a social focal point while shaded from a large overhead canopy.
The stormwater garden represents a large scale approach to the infrastructure of a city. This will serve the station and future nearby development as district
amenity. From the station roof terrace, visitors will be able to see a vibrant and rich color palette of native species as a seasonal display. The stark forms will
accentuate these changes all year.

Market & Exchange PlazaDowntown Raleigh AnalysisImages courtesy of Surface 678
The first step in the process for designing the plazas was to gain insight to how Downtown Raleigh functions. These diagrams and maps helped illustrate the importance of the spaces to the current and future needs of the city. Information for these were drawn from online mapping and existing downtown studies. The events diagram modeled after the one used for Union Station helped program the plazas based on areas in existing used that could be enhanced.

Market & Exchange Plaza
Surface 678, has been challenged to redesign existing plazas in Downtown Raleigh from under used spaces into flexible and vibrant spaces to align with the downtown vision for spaces. The existing plazas were once part of the downtown pedestrian mall which proved to be a failure. The two plazas are littered with cluttered relics leading to unusable and unsafe spaces. The design for exchange plaza focuses around saving two existing trees while running a granite seating element as a thread through the space. The seatwall provides grade transition as well as an element when lit at night. Market plaza focuses around multiple elements such as space for farmers markets, and permanent shade structures to be programmed. Each of the plazas uses a similar palette of design materials while maintaining a unique program and function.

Student CenterNCAT State UniversityGreensboro, NCRole in project - Construction Documentation, Model buildingImages courtesy of Surface 678
A new student center designed by Vines architecture has enlightened me to high levels of detail and craft. Much of my experience with this project is late stage of design development and through construction documentation. An extreme amount of detailing has been put into the design of the monumental stairs on the front plaza. My other role in the process was the construction of a presentation model of the front plaza and renderings of the northern fountain that leads to the student center.
