Value Scale: Prepare the sky

• Create a 5 step value scale• Continuous tone is called a gradient• Use the side of your pencil to create a gradient

in the sky from a 4 value to a 0• Use a paper towel to blend the sky into the

paper• Use an eraser in a circular motion to erase out

the clouds. Do not use pencil outline

Add the Tree

• Use fast gesture marks to draw the feeling of leaves and mass. Think of overlapping masses as leaf clusters.

• Do not try to draw individual leaves (except for the edges of the form).

• Leave spaces where the sky can show through or branches can be seen.

Add grasses at the base of the tree by

using a flick of the pencil to

vary the pressure.
