Brainstorming Magnet Poetry: The links below can be used to wake up student brains and help them plan for writing. Each of the sites have their pros and con, and let you manipulate words a little differently.

BrainstormingPicture Prompts : Using the dual page display, the class can discuss the picture prompt on the left, then student volunteers could write their ideas on the handwriting page to the right using the pens. The teacher could also use a picture prompt to start a class story. A student volunteer could begin by writing the first sentence, then another volunteer could continue to story.

Brainstorming
Picture Prompts : For upper elementary students, picture prompts can be effective in teaching voice and perspective. Using the picture on the left, students can brainstorm the story each of the characters in the photo might tell. A student volunteer could write one scenario using the child's voice, another volunteer could use the pens to write a sentence using the police officer's voice.

Sequencing
Writing Backwards: To aid students in planning for the writing SOL, students read a model passages and then use the four square on the following page; taking turns with the Smart Pens to write out how the author may have planned for the passage.

Word Work: Using the dual page display, drag the letters needed from the alphabet master template to the blank slide on the right. Students can come to the board and manipulate the letters chosen to make words.

Word Study: Students can manipulate the words on the screen (taken from Word Journeys) and sort into different spelling patterns. After the sort is complete the pens can be used to circle, underline, or highlight the spelling patterns.

Word Work: Using the screen shade the words underneath can be revealed slowly to play "Guess the Covered Word". Once the word is fully revealed a student can come up to the screen to trace using the pens for handwriting practice.
