Publisher’s Note
December 2011
It is with a great deal of excitement that I introduce the Holiday issue of Laura U | Mag. At Laura U we abso-
lutely love the Holidays: the crisp weather, spending time with friends and family, and gift giving of course!
Although the year is winding down and we are enjoying the slow pace of the holidays in our studio, we are
using this time to reflect on all we have accomplished this year and to look forward to 2012!
2011 saw the expansion of the Laura U Collection, both brick-and-mortar and virtually. Our new showroom
features many new and fabulous lines and we are able to showcase even more of our favorite finds on our
newly released www.ShopLauraU.com! The Laura U Design Studio won several awards for exemplary pro-
jects at this year’s ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) Awards. And after creating some of our
best interiors yet in 2011, we plan to keep the trend going in 2012! The Laura U | Mag strives to feature what
we see in the interior design and fashion world and the response to this year’s issues has been fantastic!
The magazine continues to be a creative space that inspires our interiors, forwards R & D for our boutique
and opens an avenue for discussion with you.
All of us at Laura U were thrilled at the creative challenges of producing the new showroom, designing interi-
ors for our clients, launching www.shoplaurau.com, and bringing it all together in a magazine. It is because
of your incredible support that we are able to do all of these things. Our plans are colossal for the New Year
and we can't wait to see what 2012 will bring! But in the meantime, we hope you enjoy our latest effort: the
December issue of Laura U | Mag!
Happy, Happy, Holidays and here's to an even more creative 2012!

Karee…
Letter from
t’s winding
down time at
Laura U. With
current pro-
jects in full
swing and new projects
on the horizon, we are
very grateful for this
year. Thinking of all the
food, shopping, family
time and cocktails al-
ways makes me nostal-
gic. It’s as if we just
started the year and it’s
already flown by. It’s
inevitable that with the
holidays comes a time of great reminiscing. When I look at
when we first started this magazine and how it has evolved, it
makes the saying “it just gets better with time”, so appropriate.
In this issue, we brought the festivities to you; filled with holi-
day décor, great art, our top picks for places to find great,
unique holiday gifts and yummy holiday recipes for you and
yours. But it wouldn’t be Laura U|MAG without an issue filled
with shopping, more furnishings, and fashion.
We have experienced so much in this very short time and we
are proud of what we give every month. We are grateful for
our community, thankful for organizations that care for chil-
dren, women and our lovable pooches and artists that inspire
us immensely. And, as I write this, I yearn for the season filled
with family, food and gifts to be in full swing, all while I gasp
with a deep sigh when I think of what the crazy Houston shop-
ping season will unleash.
Enjoy the holidays and we will see you again in 2012!!

Shannon Ables is the crea-
tor and editor of The Simply
Luxurious Life blog, as well
as a freelance writer and
high school English teacher.
Now living in a rural town
after moving from the met-
ropolitan life in Portland,
she has discovered that a
simply luxurious life is some-
thing that everyone can attain if indeed one is
seeking quality rather than quantity, deca-
dence rather than frivolity, personal style in-
stead of trendy fashions and a truly fulfilling life
instead of being led around by the nose. So
whether it be found in food, fashion, or home
decor, contentment, pleasure and a stylishly
fulfilling life can be cultivated.
Since she was introduced
to thrifting by her
late Grandmother and
Aunt, Tonia has devel-
oped a fascination for all
things vintage. This passion
led her to dabble in interi-
or design, decorating
and writing. A self pro-
claimed professional thrifter and stylist, there is
no singular title that encompasses all she
knows, can do, has done or aim to do. She sets
her own trends and styles without question. Be-
cause of this passion, she created Chic Modern
Vintage, an online place that connects her to
everything she enjoys. She loves rare vintage
treasures, creative people, good vodka, great
food, beautiful clothes, Prince, and old movies.

The mailbox and day calendar during the holidays quickly fill up as gatherings, parties and traditional festivities wish
for our presence. Let it sparkle and show either some leg or well-toned arms. A cocktail party is a prime occasion to
unwind somewhat and enjoy the mix of people, spirits and surroundings.

When attending the holiday office party, stick fairly close to what you would wear to work and don’t reveal too
much – remember, the goal is to celebrate, not obliterate the professional decorum that has been built up until this
point. Add an extra accessory or increase the height of the heels but remain professional and appropriate.

One of the loveliest compliments to pay to the hostess of an intimate dinner party during the holidays is to spruce up
your attire. Choose a beautifully draped blouse or dress in a design that is figure flattering and found in warm fall and
winter tones – browns, jewel tones and black is always a dependable option. Add a stunning accessory, an oversized
clutch, along with a gift for the host and the evening is sure to be a treat.

Want to impress family and friends for the holidays? Well, try this
tufted, Chippendale French inspired chair. At first glance this uphol-
stered back arm chair, complete with a tufted upholstered back and
Chippendale legs, seems fairly traditional. But look closer: the
chrome finished nail head trim around the luxurious seat adds a
touch of modernity. Made by Century Furniture , this is a must steal
for the holidays.

porated! In addition to more seating, the client wanted to
use some of her original pieces. So key pieces were reuphol-
stered and refinished and were complimented by new, cus-
tom designs which completed the space.

Tell us about Haut Chocolat? Why the name Haut Chocolat?
The French word haute means elevated or high-toned which we believe accurately
describes the product offered in our store. The custom made chocolate is our signa-
ture gift to our clients at point of sale. Enclosed in each box of chocolate is a quote
that affirms the customer with our various empowering or amusing famous quotes.
Why did you start a boutique -clothing store?
I currently have two couture /bridge designer stores, one in Jacksonville, Florida and
the other in Houston. The Haut Chocolat idea is a venue for the company to explore
a more contemporary and flirty customer base with a range of price points for eve-
ryone. I also viewed this as an opportunity to put a twist into the retail experience
with the chocolate gifts and affirmation quotes.
What are your favorite things to shop for?
I love to shop for inventive items, novel prints and asymmetrical designs. I also enjoy
having the exciting chance to explore new designer sources and labels.
One of Houston's trendiest boutiques, Haut Chocolat, has delicious clothes with an
extra sweet Style. Linda Cunningham, owner of Haut Chocolat, makes sure that
this boutique is filled with gorgeous clothing, delicious jewelry, and fashionable
handbags and accessories. Linda gives us her thoughts and ideas on her concept
behind Haut Chocolat, as well as her passion for fashion.

Holiday Design with Regina of Twins Design
W ith the holidays approaching we
chatted with Regina Dorsett of
Houston-based Twins Design to
learn about her holiday decorating
business and some tips for turning your home into
a winter wonderland.
How did Twins Design get its start?
Janet, my twin sister, and I started in Interior De-
sign and decided to expand the business to dec-
orating for the Holidays. Janet was in charge of
the Interior Design Department and I headed up
the Holiday décor. Our first job was a 20’ Live
Christmas Tree in an outdoor shopping center.
Is there a story behind the name “Twins Design”?
Janet and I always wanted to work together as partners and once we finished our schooling, we
started our business together. Since we were identical twins, why not go with it. People always
seemed to remember us as the Twins, and it just seemed to work.
What are your five favorite things to use when decorating for the holidays?
1. I love Santa’s. I love old ones, new ones, collectible ones, antique ones. I love to group the San-
ta’s together and enjoy all the different shapes and sizes. One of my favorite places is a little an-
tique store in the Heights that puts out his Santa’s once a year. They are really inexpensive, a bit
dirty and “antiquish”, but they are adorable. Their faces are jolly and I just love them.
2. I love ribbon. I love the French Silk ribbon by Midori. It has all the freshest interior design colors
that compliments my clients décor. Most of my clients have hired interior designers to design
their homes and these ribbons compliment the designer fabrics and color combinations of a
room. I like to mix different ribbons with the silks for a variety of texture and pattern.
3. Burlap – I love burlap. Under a tree, Top of Coffee Table or Dining Table and just about any
where that one can imagine. I love the new Burlap ribbons available. They seem to really com-
pliment the latest trends in Home Décor.
4. Aged glass, silver, PINK, and lavender seem to be my favorite colors for the Holidays. Pink just
simply makes me smile. Purple is back, but I like to refer to it as Lilac or Lavender.
5. Organic – This seems to be the trend. My client asked my to decorate their home with an organ-
ic flair. What exactly does this mean was my first question. I used various woods, pinecones,
handmade crafts like ornaments, pearls, magnolias, branches, clear glass balls, white orna-
ments, stars made out of drift wood, and a bit of glitz of course. A little bit of Aspen, Colorado
with a bit of Houston Glitz.
Which holiday do you prefer to decorate for?
Christmas of course, but I have to say Halloween is really close. It is just simply fun, anything goes,
crazy and scary at the same time. I also love Valentine’s Day. Pink and red are such a great com-
bination of colors. Fresh flowers, rose pedals, pink and red toile.

Buy quality. It lasts and you will appreciate it year after year when pulled out of storage.
Change your ribbon every year or every other year. This way you feel like you purchased all new dec-orations but simply changed the ribbon. It costs a lot less to do this than buying all new decorations.
Buy something expensive each year. Accessories like Santa’s or Angels are great ways to embellish your home for the Holidays. It is expensive to purchase everything at once, but if you buy something special from your favorite store each year, you will have quite a collection before you know it.
Decorate your kitchen – This is the room families spend the most time in and often over-looked when it comes to decorating. Chandeliers, pot racks, and counter top trees are fun ways to embellish the kitchen. Some of my clients have slim trees in their kitchens that are crazy colors that they might not put on their designer tree.
Light everything if possible. At night, the decorations are not noticeable, but lights are. They reflect in the home and create a wonderful holiday mood.

1 tsp salt
1 tsp pepper
2 tbsp Italian seasoning
1 – 1 1/4 lb ground turkey
1 lb box whole wheat penne (doesn’t need to be whole wheat)

2) Toss the squash, peppers, mush-rooms, and onion with olive oil, 1/2 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp pepper, and 1 tbsp italian seasoning
3) Roast for 15 minutes.
4) Meanwhile, cook pasta for 10 minutes (I cooked mine long be-cause it’s whole wheat and I like it really soft) and drain.
5) In a pan over medium-high heat, cook the ground turkey with 1 tbsp italian seasoning for about 10 minutes.
6) In a large bowl, toss the pasta, tur-key, roasted vegetables, sauce, cheeses (save a little of both for top-ping), peas, 1/2 tsp salt, and 1/2 tsp pepper.

Garlic-Roasted Chicken
Eight years ago, Ginger Wheless needed to decorate her
newly purchased West U home. She had a defined vision
for her home and fortunately had very talented design-
savvy friends to draw inspiration from which gave her the
confidence to try her hand at decorating her own home.
Being the founder of REDNews, a Commercial Real Estate
Marketing Directory, she knew the power of word-of-mouth
marketing and began asking her designer friends for the
inside scoop on where to buy and who to hire. The process
inspired The Red Vault where she married her marketing
mind and the interior design community into an online re-
source to market members of the Houston design elite.
TheRedVault.com was launched in September of 2009 as
a forward thinking marketing vehicle to connect the local
design community with the discerning buyer. The website
provides the trade with a platform to display their design
talent, art and unique inventory with resourceful clientele in
a more personal, accessible way than traditional print ad-
vertising. TheRedVault.com keeps Houston’s design aficio-
nado and the trade informed about local events, shares
one-of-a-kind inventory finds in a searchable database, and
writes content exclusively about their member’s talents
through the weekly newsletter, blog posts, and social me-
dia. This summer Ginger took the next logical step in clos-
ing the gap between the design community and the client
by hiring Sara Cooney to be the Director of Marketing.
Sara’s design background and keen eye for color and inte-
riors proved to be the perfect fit for the position. Sara’s vi-
sionary approach to The Red Vault concept has injected
energy and passion into this powerful

Ginger’s ability to understand and relate to members
and fellow design professionals allows her to bridge the
gap between the consumer and the trade resource.
Sara is not only passionate about the fabulous mer-
chandise and services her members are purveying, she
also has a unique understanding of their business chal-
lenges. For over 10 years she has worked to educate
design consumers about making choices reflecting their
own personal voice, as well as their own unique taste,
and she sees The Red Vault as a natural step in the
evolution of the designer and client relationship. The
goal of this outdoor design was to enjoy a gorgeous
view with the ability to relax. Kettal’s Landscape, Vene-
zia and Atmosphere Collections are shown here and
gives homeowners a great range of ideas from which to
choose for their outdoor living space. Wicker furniture
has become increasingly popular with a more refined
look and an appealing taupe shade. Decorative pillows
and cushions with varying designs are used to add col-
or and give the space a comfortable homey look and
feel. It’s all about taking the inside out now, and this de-
sign does it well with the use of the outdoor sofa and
fire pit. While the design is a very important part of any
area, the view here is what ties it all in. You can see
how the design was done for the view, placing the furni-
ture to strategically take advantage of the beautiful
views in all of the spaces.

Giving Back
This November Laura U is giving back to a great
cause; The Children’s Fund, Inc. The Children’s
Fund, Inc. has been a helping hand for children in
need since 1972. This volunteer organization with
no over head and no paid staff runs thanks to the
individuals who give their time and money without
getting anything in return. As of 2010 the annual
fundraising has gone up from $4,000 to more than
$600,000. The main goal of this great charity is to
give back to the children who are in need of their
services; The Children’s Fund has become a staple
in Houston’s community as a charitable organiza-
tion helping Houston’s children. 100% of the dona-
tions go directly to the kids, and it is a great chari-
ty to get involved in!
