Lauren MabryArtist Statement 2015

My sculptures and dimensional paintings are made of glazed ceramic. They're abstract, emotional objects wrought with bold, colorful marks. I am an intuitive risk-taker with a keen attraction to movement and material. I exploit the intrinsically perplexing nature of glaze. It is lively and seductive.

The clay forms I produce to paint on are elemental cylinders and basic curves that allow the highly pigmented glazes to clash and resound with a kind of musical timbre, owing with movement, creating rich, hypnotic tones and textures.

I revel in the moments of uncertainty as I close and open kilns. Working with a calculated level of openness, I am aware of the transformative, capricious nature of ceramics.
