What is a layout?

Consists of the arrangement ofillustrations, texts, and graphics on apage which is to be printed

Includes the selection of font styles andcolors

Also known as “makeup”

How to plan a good makeup?

By headline and textarrangement

By way of text and photocombinations

PROPORTION Deals with the ratio of one part to

another and of the parts to the whole

Pictures must be sized properly to keepup with other shapes on the page.

A long story may ruin the proportion ofthe page.

Factors of an Excellent Layout

UNITY/HARMONY Refers to the agreement among the

different parts of the layout

Contents of a page must blend as aharmonious unit.

The headlines should complement eachother and pictures should not distract theeyes too much.

BALANCE Deals with the feeling of equality or

gravitational equilibrium in weight

Occult/Asymmetric Balance – visual units arenot identical but are placed in positions thatsomehow produce a “hidden” balance

Inside pages should be laid out as facingpage units

EMPHASIS Involves the differentiation between the

more important and the less important

News articles must be displayed according toimportance through its position, style, andsize of the headline

CONTRAST Refers to the blending of units as one

Every headline or photograph on a pagecontrast with adjoining materials

Contrasting adjacent headlines will helpemphasize the importance of each other

GRAY AREAS

SCREAMING HEADLINE (large headline for a short story)

HEAVY TOPS

FIT THEM ALL (headlines of the same size on a page)

PLACING SMALL HEADS ON LONG STORIES

EDITORIAL PAGES Should have a distinctive dignified

appearance

The masthead should be relativelysmall and may be anchored in anycorner

Titles should be of masculineappearance, not in italic or script type

FEATURE/

LITERARY PAGES Must have a feminine appearance

Italicized texts may be used

Fancy font styles are allowed

SPORTS PAGES These pages have bolder but livelier

appearance than the others

The makeup must suggest action,speed, and color

Large bold heads are used

Importance of a Good Layout

To give prominence to the news inproportion to its importance

To make the different contents easy tofind and read

To give the pages an attractiveappearance

To give the paper a personality of itsown

Rules on Typography

Use appropriate font style

Maintain or make font consistent

Do not over-emphasize headlines,

example, bold headline with underline

Kickers are usually in bold format

Avoid all caps headline

Usually headlines are in 14 font size andarticles or text are in 12 font size
