What is a Fraction?

A fraction is a number that tells us

parts of a whole.

This is a whole,

one big circle!

These

are

parts!

THE TOP NUMBER OF THE FRACTION TELLS US HOW MANY SLICES WE HAVE.

WE CALL IT THE NUMERATOR.

The bottom number tells us how many parts in the whole pizza.We call it the denominator.

• ½ + ½ = 1• Two halves make a whole

What fraction of the square is blue?

Quarter of the square is blue.

One quarter of the square is blue.

A quarter of the square is blue.

Remember the ‘s’:

If it is any other number

•Greater than is when one number is BIGGER than the other number.

•Three is GREATER THAN one!

Five is greater than two.

Ten is greater than four.

How do I say this in English?

Four is greater than three.

•Less than is when one number is SMALLER than the other number.

•One is LESS THAN three!

Eight is less than sixteen.

•Proper fraction, the numerator is always less than the denominator.

•Improper fraction is when thenumerator is greater than or equal to the denominator

•Mixed number is when a whole number and fraction are combined.
