“Let him sing psalms”

Matt 7:15-20 “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing,

but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes…

Matt 7:15-20 …of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth

forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth

evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil…

Matt 7:15-20 …fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth

good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them”

1 Thes 5:21 “Prove all things; hold fast that

which is good”

1 John 4:1 “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many

false prophets are gone out into the world”

Prov 16:18 “Pride goeth before

destruction, and an haughty spirit before

a fall”

Prov 18:12 “Before destruction the heart of

man is haughty, and before honour is

humility”

Churches of Christlove music-

unaccompanied by mechanical instruments.

Singing is a prominent—and favorite part of each service.

Jam 5:13 “Is any among you

afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry?

let him sing psalms”

The church is taught in the New Testament.

Purchased on the cross and established

on Pentecost.

Matt 16:18 “And I say also unto thee, That thou art

Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not

prevail against it”

Acts 20:28 “Take heed therefore unto yourselves,

and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath

made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own

blood”

Hear Christ, not Moses

Matt 17:5 “While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud

overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved

Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him”

Preach gospel to all nations

Matt 28:18-20 “And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All

power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and…

Matt 28:18-20 …teach all nations, baptizing them

in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of

the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all…

Matt 28:18-20 …things whatsoever I have

commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even

unto the end of the world. Amen”

Old Testament was nailed to

cross

Col 2:14 “Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which

was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to

his cross”

New Testament was effective after Christ’s

death

Heb 9:16-17 “For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of

the testator. For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth”

Christ came to establish a new law.

Heb 10:9 “Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may

establish the second”

The Rule of Faith and

Practice: Word of God

2 Tim 3:16-17 “All scripture is given by

inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for

reproof, for correction, for instruction in…

2 Tim 3:16-17 …righteousness: That the

man of God may be perfect, throughly

furnished unto all good works”

1 Sam 16:7 “But the LORD said unto Samuel,

Look not on his countenance, or on the

height of his stature; because I have refused…

1 Sam 16:7 …him: for the LORD seeth not as man

seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on

the heart”

John 17:17 “Sanctify them

through thy truth: thy word is truth”

Matt 4:4 “But he answered and said, It is written, Man

shall not live by bread alone, but by every word

that proceedeth out of the mouth of God”

Churches of Christ today strive to be

identical to the church in the New

Testament

John 4:23 “But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship

him”

What pleases God?

God listens to our hearts

1 Sam 16:7 “But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his

countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man

seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD

looketh on the heart”

John 4:24 “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must

worship him in spirit and in truth”

Martin Luther, founder of the Lutheran

Church, called the instrument “an ensign of Baal” (Mc-Clintock and Strong’s Cyclopedia)

Churches of Christ believe strongly in

having divine authority (a scripture)

for all we teach and practice.

Col 3:17 “And whatsoever ye do in

word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord

Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by

him”

“Whatsoever” and “all” are comprehensive

words. To do a thing “in Jesus’ name”

means to do it by His authority.

Singing, however, is mentioned seven

times in the contest of worship.

Acts 16:25 “And at midnight Paul and Silas

prayed, and sang praises unto God: and

the prisoners heard them”

Rom 15:9 “And that the Gentiles might glorify God

for his mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy

name”

1 Cor 14:15 “What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I

will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the

understanding also”

Eph 5:19 “Speaking to yourselves in psalms

and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and

making melody in your heart to the Lord”

Col 3:16 “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and

admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual

songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord”

Heb 2:12 “Saying, I will declare thy name unto

my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing

praise unto thee”

Jam 5:13 “Is any among you afflicted?

let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing

psalms”

Singing is commanded

Eph 5:19 “Speaking to yourselves in psalms

and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and

making melody in your heart to the Lord”

We have examples of Christians

singing

Acts 16:25 “And at midnight Paul and Silas

prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the

prisoners heard them”

1 Cor 14:15 “What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and

I will pray with the understanding also: I will

sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding

also”

We Offer God the fruit of our

lips.

Heb 13:15 “By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God

continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name”

Jam 1:2-4 “My brethren, count it all joy when ye

fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh…

Jam 1:2-4 …patience. But let patience have

her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and

entire, wanting nothing”

1 Pet 4:11 “If any man speak, let him speak as

the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God…

1 Pet 4:11 …in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for

ever and ever. Amen”

“Let him sing psalms”

Jer 10:23 “O LORD, I know that the way of

man is not in himself: it is not in man that

walketh to direct his steps”

Isai 55:8-9 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,

saith the LORD. For as the heavens are…

Isai 55:8-9 …higher than the earth, so are my

ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts

than your thoughts”

Rev 22:14 “Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to

the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates

into the city”

1 John 3:22 “And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because

we keep his commandments, and do

those things that are pleasing in his sight”

Rev 13:9 “If any man have an ear,

let him hear”

Rom 10:17 “So then faith cometh by

hearing, and hearing by the word of God”

Matt 4:4 “But he answered and said, It is written, Man

shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that

proceedeth out of the mouth of God”

Acts 3:19 “Repent ye therefore, and be

converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when

the times of refreshing shall come from the

presence of the Lord”

Phil 2:11 “And that every tongue should confess that Jesus

Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the

Father”

Gal 3:27 “For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on

Christ”
