Let’s find some e-books

• List of places to find electronic books: http://www.oit.edu/libraries/find/books/ebooks– Safari Techbooks– Netlibrary– Gale Virtual reference library

How does it work?

What if I want print?

• For students in Oregon and Washington –Summit– If you are near a summit school (

http://orbiscascade.org/map/) you may set up a “visiting summit borrowers account”

• For students outside those areas – Worldcat– Use worldcat to search for items, enter your zip

code to find out libraries near you with the item

Let’s see an example of Worldcat

Finding Articles

• Electronic resources by subject• What is the difference between scholarly and

popular journals?• How do I get the full article?

LET’S FIND SOME ARTICLES

Think of a topic while we open up a browser so you can follow along

What if I know the name of the journal?

Use e-journals in the quick search to see if we have it electronically.

What if full text is not available?

• Interlibrary loan– http://www.oit.edu/libraries/find/articles/borrow

/borrow-request– Articles, even those OIT owns in paper only, will be

sent to your OIT email• A library near you– You can use WorldCat to find out if a library near

you has a journal the same as we did for books

Where do I start?

• Find by subject: http://www.oit.edu/libraries/find/subject

• Electronic resources by subject: http://www.oit.edu/libraries/find/articles/subject

• Contact the librarian: http://www.oit.edu/libraries/distance/getting-help/contact-the-distance-education-liaison-librarian

Why can’t I just Google it?

• Google Scholar: http://scholar.google.com– In scholar preferences, set up OIT as your library

for instant full text• Google Books: http://books.google.com– Many titles are only previews– Under “Get this book” click on “Find in a library”

Other Questions?• What is my logon?

– The library logon is the same as your blackboard and OIT email, first.last. The password is the same too.

• What if my subject doesn’t have a guide yet?– Let us know what you want a guide on, we will build it. Until then try the more

general subjects under electronic resources by subject: http://www.oit.edu/libraries/find/articles/subject

• Where do I get more info?– The library has lots of pages to help you on your research. Browse the

website under Help! To find out more. If you don’t see what you are looking for, contact Dawn.

• How do I cite things?– We will go over this more Monday, October 18 at 5pm (PST) in Copyright

101. Until then try this page: http://www.oit.edu/libraries/help/citing
