Lifestyle diseases affecting women• They are non communicable diseases that occur

as a result of changes in one’s lifestyle.

Occurrence of disease• Examples affecting women

• Cardiovascular diseases (heart attack and stroke)- 1in 2 women in USA 1• Cancer – 1 in 26 women in USA 1• Diabetes• Cirrhosis (alcohol)

• Causes• Habits such as poor eating, inactivity or smoking• Factors that we cannot control such as age, gender and heredity

Diabetes • Affects 26 million people in USA. In Kenya, the rates are

also increasing. • This is where the pancreas insulin production is not

enough to clear the glucose from the blood stream (type II diabetes) or when born, the pancreas does not function (type I diabetes)

• Gestational diabetes- high blood sugar levels during pregnancy

• Pre-diabetes (metabolic syndrome) – high blood sugar levels but not having diabetes due to bad eating habits

• 1 in 26 women• Abnormal overgrowth of cells

– Benign tumors – non-cancerous– Malignant tumors – cancerous

CAUTION!!• C – change in bowel habits• A – a sore that does not heal• U – unusual bleeding or discharge• T – thickening or a lump• I – indigestion or difficulty swallowing• O – obvious change in a wart or a mole• N – nagging cough or hoarseness

is suitable) so as to detoxify the system• When taken with other foods, it causes fermentation and
