Lifti g Lives, Buildi g Futures… Lasting Change
As part of its mission, TCF provides a
loving and permanent home for 97
orphaned and vulnerable children at
the Rift Valley Childre s Village.
TCF also works to promote the well-
being of all children and address the
problem of systemic poverty by
providing access to high-quality
education, free healthcare, and
microfinance trainings and loans
for the entire community.
The Ta za ia Childre s Fu d TCF orks to eliminate poverty and improve the lives of
marginalized children and families in the Karatu
region of northern Tanzania.
The Rift Valley Childre ’s Village RVCV provides a loving home, family and community for 97
marginalized children.
TCF began a contract with the local government to
co-manage Gyetighi Primary School in 2007.
Gyetighi is now the #1 government school in the
Karatu District and in the top 4% of all
government and private schools in Tanzania.
Inspired by the success of Gyetighi Primary School,
in 2013, the government welcomed TCF to sign a
similar contact with another local school,
Oldeani Secondary.
We have already seen great improvements and
expect to match the success of Gyetighi and
become a top-ranking school in the coming years.
TCF employs a full-time Registered Nurse who
a ages TCF’s Rural Community Health Clinic. In
addition to the care and trainings provided by our
nurse, TCF partners with the Foundation for
African Medicine and Education (FAME) to provide
medical consultations and treatments for
those requiring more complex interventions.
Our Microfinance program currently empowers
over 600 community members by providing the
training, support and resources needed to operate
small businesses. These businesses provide clients
with the economic opportunity to improve the
well-being and quality of life of their families.

The faces of our girls and the openness of their hearts will stay with me
forever. And the thrill I got watching my daughter teach the young
children was unparalleled. We are planning to return the summer after
this one.

For the last 10 years, in a remote northern corner of the country,
hundreds of children in need of care have found refuge and protection in
a mountainside oasis called the Rift Valley Children's Village. It's not just a
safe haven, it's their home. It's run by an American woman, India Howell,
and Peter Leon Mmassy, her Tanzanian business partner. They're like "The
Odd Couple;" she's impatient and blunt, he's cool and diplomatic.
Together they are parents to 94 children and counting -- the biggest
extended family we have ever seen. When we heard of this extraordinary
place, we had to go see for ourselves.

It s not a traditional orphanage, Tracy said. The kids are adopted and given
a stable home for life, including having a place to come home to from
secondary school a d u i ersity.
…She s raised the bar to make a difference in the world, Tracy said.

Earlier this year, Hintlian and Rockport artist Eileen Mueller […] tra eled to the
village. But they found much more than an orphanage. The rural grammar
school the organization oversees, Gyetighi Primary School, continues to be the
No. 1 public school in the district, and was ranked in the top 2 percent of all
primary schools (public and private) in Tanzania, Hintlian and Mueller said. In
addition to education, the organization is at work at a larger economic
development piece to bolster the region — all this within one decade.

Your visit to Tanzania will be filled with hard work, early mornings, and
gorgeous views of the spectacular Rift Valley. The Ta za ia Childre s Fund is a home for orphaned children where everyone gets their hands
dirty. With wild animals outside the compound, and Mt. Kilimanjaro not
too far away, this is one unforgettable volunteer adventure.
