The Impact Pathway of CGIAR Research-4- Development CRPs
Impact on ultimate Beneficiaries
(intends to produce impacts)
• Improved food security• Improved livelihoods• Improved health
Development outcomes(engaged in development
outcomes)
Research outcomes(co-responsible for research
outcomes)
Outputs(accountable for producing
outputs
• Increased agricultural production• Lower food prices• More efficient production systems
• Use of knowledge by partners• Adoption of technologies• Change in policy environment
• Improved Crop Varieties• Policy instruments• Water use strategies
Examples on Linking R with D
• Link with Developmental projects funded by International Development Organizations– IFAD- funded project Barani Village in Pakistan – WB-funded project Marsa Matrouh project in
Egypt – USAID-funded project in Baluchistan, Pakistan
(FAO and ICARDA)– IFAD-funded project M&M- Community approach/
CDP
Examples on Linking R with D
• Link with Governmental Developmental projects/initiatives – Scaling-up of raised bed in Egypt (IFAD,
Government of Egypt, Food Security project- AFESD, KFAED, IsDB, OFID)
– Scaling up of bio-pesticides in IPM of date plam in Iraq (IFAD and USAID-HSAD)
Examples on Linking R with D
• Link with Private Sector– Fabrication/local manufacturing of seeders for CA in
Syria, Iraq and NA (ACIAR, IFAD)
– Fabrication/local manufacturing of machines for mechanical raised be in Egypt (ACIAR, Government of Egypt)
– Rust-resistant wheat varieties in Ethiopia in partnership with local developmental authorities and private sector (USAID)

What is Next?• Engage in direct discussion between managers of research grants and
developmental projects
• Extend this annual coordination/consultation meeting between NEN/IFAD & ICARDA by one day and involve the Directors of IFAD’s Developmental Projects in NEN
• Document the experience of NEN/IFAD and ICARDA
• Take 2-3 case studies for piloting– 2-3 existing developmental project and grant (s)– 2-3 new developmental project (design phase)
