LegionnairesdiseaseisasevereandpotentiallyfatalpneumoniacausedbyatypeofbacteriacalledLegionella.TransmissionofLegionellaoccursbymeansofaerosolizationoraspirationofwatercontaminatedwithLegionellaorganisms.SystemslinkedtothetransmissionofLegionellaincludepotablewaterdistributionsystems(shower,faucets,ect.),coolingtowers,humidifiers,respiratorytherapyequipment,whirlpoolspas,andevaporativecondensers.

Since2001,theCDCsurveillancereportshavestatedthatLegionellahasbecomethesinglemostcommonlyreportedpathogenassociatedwithdrinkingwateroutbreaksintheUnitedStates.Duringthe2005-2006CDCSurveillanceperiod,100%ofthewaterbornediseaseoutbreaksassociatedwithLegionellaoccurredasaresultofLegionellacolonizationinplumbingandpipesand80%ofthemoccurredinahealthcaresetting.Pseudomonas

Pseudomonasisanopportunisticpathogen.Thispathogenisnaturallyfoundinsoil,water,plantsandanimals(includinghumans).Itrarelycausesdiseaseinhealthypersons.Pseudomonasisthemostcommonpathogenisolatedfrompatients

The Problem

whohavebeenhospitalizedlongerthanoneweek.ItisthefrequentcauseofHAIssuchaspneumonia,urinarytractinfections,andbacteremia.InfectionscausedbyPseudomonasarecomplicatedandcanbelifethreatening.A2002studyconcludedthat36-42%ofhealthcareassociatedPseudomonasinfectionsarepossiblyduetocontaminatedtapwater.Additionally,itisthenumberonecauseofintensivecarerelatedpneumoniaandthenumbertwocauseofallhospitalacquiredpneumoniasTheseinfectionsareassociatedwithanextremelyhighmortalityrate,upto68%.Addressing Hospital Acquired Infections:

EvidenceofthesignificantproblemofHospitalAcquiredInfections(HAIs),intermsofbothlivesandhealthcarecosts,continuestogrow.Manyhospitaladministratorsbelievetheycannotaffordtotakethenecessarystepstoinstallapreventativesystem.Thetruthis,theycan’taffordnotto.HAIsdramaticallyerodehospitalprofitseachyear.Preventionstrategiesandtechnologiesaresavinghospitalsmillionsofdollarsand,moreimportantly,countlesslives.

The Equipment.

OurLiquidator®systemconsistsoffourmaincomponents:thecontrolunit,flowcell,flowmeter,andremoteengineermanagementsystem(REMS).All LiquiTech® components are NSF certified.

1. Control UnitTheLiquiTech®electroniccontrolunitcanbeconfiguredtocontrol output current levels bymultiplemethods,whichdirectly relates to the amount of ions released into thewater.Suchmethodsincludecurrentsetpointswhichwillmaintainthecurrentaccordingtoitssetpointindefinitely,internaltimerfunctionswhichcanbeprogrammedforeverydayoftheweektooperateonlyatspecificintervals,remotecontact input such as a flow switch, and analog inputsfromsources such as a flowmeter or a copper analyzer.Shouldanyuser-configuredtrippointsoccurorfailuresbedetected,twoindependent120volt10ampalarmrelaysareprovidedforremotefunctions.

3. Flow MeterThe LiquiTech® computerized electronic control units aresupplied with “closed-loop proportional control” whichautomaticallyproducespreciselevelsofcopperandsilverionsproportionaltoflowrates(waterconsumption)measuredbyaflowmeter.Itisinstalledinthecoldwatermakeuptotheheatsourceorthehotwatersupplytothefacility,whicheverismostpractical.Thecopperanalyzerisinstalledtosamplecopper levels inthehotwaterstoragetankorrecirculationsystem.TheflowmeterssuppliedareBlue-WhiteIndustriesSonic-Pro™S3CHybridUltrasonicflowmeters.

2. Flow CellThe flow-cells housing the copper/silver electrodes arecomprisedofhightemperature,highpressure,schedule80CPVC.ElectrodespacersarefabricatedfromDuPontPBT polyester resin. The flow-cells are supplied withLiquiTech®quick-connectstainlesssteelclampsforeaseofinstallation.Flow-cellsareavailableinvarioussizesandconfigurationsdependingupontheapplication.Standard150-pound flangeswith 304 stainless steel nuts, boltsand washers are also available. The entire LiquiTech®ElectronicDisinfectionSystemincludingController,Flow-Celland interconnectingwire isETL(UL-508and1081)certified.LiquiTech®productsconformtotheEuropeanUnion EMC Directive 89/336/EEC and the Low VoltageDirective72/23/EECandbeartheCEMark.

4. Remote Engineer Management SystemOurLiquidator®systemsarecapableofremotesupervisorycontrolviainternetaccessthroughalocalnetwork.Theseremote functions include real time display and alarms,system diagnostics, system configuration, remote datalogging,andallcontrolfunctionadjustments.

The Process.

Aswaterpassesthroughtheflowcell,adirectcurrentisappliedacrosstheelectrodestostimulatethecontrolledreleaseofions.Therateatwhichtheionsarereleasedisautomaticallymaintainedbyasolid-state,microprocessor-basedcontrolunitthatisbothreliableandeasytooperate.TheionemissionsoftheLiquiTech®ionizationprocessarecationic,surface-activeandapotentbiocide.Thedisinfectionactionisattributabletothepositivelychargedcopperandsilverionswhichformelectrostaticbondswithnegativelychargedsitesonmicroorganismcellwalls.Theseelectrostaticbondscreatestressesthatleadtodistortedcellwallpermeability,reducingthenormalintakeoflifesustainingnutrients.Thisaction,coupledwithproteindenaturation,leadstocelllysisanddeath.Theaccuratedose-ratecontrolsystemmaintainspreciseionlevels,providingresidualprotectionandpreventionofrecontamination.ItisthisresidualprotectionthatmakestheLiquiTech®systemsuperiortoallotherdisinfectionmethods.
