Short introduction to City of Bydgoszcz

Bydgoszcz has approximately 357 000 citizens and is the 8th largest city in Poland. Bydgoszcz is the capital of Pomerania and Kujawy voivodeship. The city is located in the north-central Poland at the crossing of Brda and Vistula rivers. The old town is close to the historical Bydgoszcz Canal, which connects Berlin and Kaliningrad through the waterway E-70 . Bydgoszcz received urban city rights from the King, Casimir the Great in 1346.

2023 self produced electricity 105 GWh/year 2020 demand for electricity 65 GWh/year

ACTIONS

Energy and Water Cost Management System

Is a web application enabling monitoring and processing of data on media consumption costs, including electricity, heat, gas and water. The application allows to identify adverse media consumption trends, track incident events and take steps towards achieving financial savings. The main feature of the application is to calculate, forecast and create databases of costs and volumes of media consumption in periods. The application allows to import data from municipal entities, generate various lists and reports.

Data for 2016 (education buildings):

Utilities Cost %

Thermal energy 15 352 203,24 zł 64,79

Electricity 4 993 484,03 zł 21,07

Water 1 694 231,67 zł 7,15

Gas 1 655 737,72 zł 6,99

Total: 23 695 656,66 zł 100,00

Increase of electricity cost 2017/2019 - 77%

Increase of electricity cost by 30% between the last procurement

The first biogas plant and the production of energy in cogeneration with the heating capacity of 0.5 MW and the electricity production capacity of 2.5 GWh was created already in 2005 at the sewage treatment plant.

ACTIONS

Incinerator plant (ProNatura) with the energy capacity of 30 MW. 60 GWh/year electricity -65% of the City’s demand

Increasing the energy efficiency through the reconstruction and thermal retrofitting of the heating network in the city of Bydgoszcz

Modernization and construction of new heating networks in the area of the City enabling the use of thermal energy generated under high-efficiency cogeneration conditions

14

3 cogeneration gas plants each with the energy capacity of 2MW 18 GWh/year -20% City’s demand

ACTIONS

15

Investments in renewable energy sources (RES) 37 installations on 37 buildings - 500 KW (2020) 25% of the building’s energy demand

ACTIONS

Biogas plant near the incinerator (Pronatura) Energy capacity 4 MW – 2023

26 GWh/year - 30% City’s demand PLANS

„in house” model NEW entity

The missing energy will be purchased on the balancing market, however the final decision as to how the transaction will be secured will be made after a detailed analysis including the actual energy production in the hourly system and the anticipated technological shutdown in September,

The surplus energy will be sold on the balancing market or another - alternative market, however the final decision as to how the transaction will be secured will be made after detailed analysis taking into account the actual hourly energy production and anticipated shutdown in September.

BALANCING ENERGY CAPACITY

How to cheaply balance lacks of energy?

Has any City already delt with this problem?

What are the alternative ways to use locally produced energy in the city?

Any good practice?
