gypsies and LAO HMONG

- Gypsies around different Paris tour-ism and my sketches of one of their facial expression

The first time I have ever met gypsies was in Paris last summer. I have met eight different gypsies in one day and they were all playing the gold ring trick on me. They are all around the city, but noone seems to welcome them. People told me they are thiefs and beggers, better to stay far and ignore whatever they said.

WHO ARE THEY? WHERE ARE THEY FROM?

WHY they are so different from the others? What is the reason behind?

Is this a single problem of paris society?

-News about gypsies forcd to leave their camp in Paris and the poor hygienic living area (image from book ‘mapping the invisible and Daily mail 28 Augest 2012)

EXPERIENCING EXTREME POVERTY and HomelessnessI have looked up online and books about the situation of EU- ROMA (gypsies). There are nunermous of news reporting the gypsies demolishment in Paris. One of the gypsies’s camp is located in eastern Lyon suburb, Saint-Priest. Hun-dreds of Roma gypsy families being forcibly sent from France back to their countries of origin in Romania and Bulgaria

This situation have explained why they maintain their live by fakement. The country and citizens are not welcoming them. There is no benefits, no job, no education. The demolishment of French government have draw my attention on the insignificance of multiculturalism and the misunderstanding between majority and minority.

-Photos of Dale Frm on the day of site clearance and demonstration on 19 Octo-ber yearly.

dale farm eviction Crays Hill, Essex.

At 7 am on 19 October 2011 the site clearance of Dale Farm began. Elec-tricity was disconnected. More than 100 riot police entered the site through the rear fence, and two people were tasered. About 200 bailiffs followed after 12 pm to begin removing citation needed] illegally erect-ed buildings. Some of the residents had to be forcibly removed, whilst others left voluntarily. Police spent most of that afternoon removing people from the 12-metre high scaffold tower on the front gate, with the help of cherry pickers. (The Telegraph 5:39PM 20 Oct 2011)

This action of UK gypsies and traveller has provided me a purpose of creating a collection to bring public awearence to the ethnic dishar-mony between locals and minority. This news showed ethnic cleaning is happening all around Europe, all around the world. Therefore, I am even more concern about the situation of oppressed minority from all over the world.

HUNTED LIKE ANIMALSLAO HMONG

‘Hunted Like Animals’ is an documentary about an ongoing, but un-known, genocide – against the Hmong people in the jungles of Laos. Coerced into joining the CIA’s anti-communist efforts during the Viet Nam war, this ethnic minority became a Secret Army. When the U.S. pulled out of Southeast Asia in 1975 and the Lao kingdom was over-thrown by the communists, the Hmong became targets of retaliation and persecution.

Since 2004, the crackdown has intensified and those who can escape seek refugee in Thailand. The traumatized refugees have not been promised protection or help. Instead, they are threatened with depor-tation back to Laos, the very place from which they barely escaped.(Film synopsis by Rebecca Sommer)

Every singel scene of this documentary has touched me, it is unbear-able to see how depress for Lao Hmong to face daily life threaten-ing. As a victim of ethnic cleaning, the human right of gypsies and Lao Hmong have been exploited. The society should really offer a helping hand to those who are suffering and advocate ethnic harmo-ny to all over the world.

ROMA PREVIEW Pavilion Venice(Lucy + Jorge Orta) September 2008

LUCY ORTA ROMA PREVIEW PAVILION

This set of artwork by Lucy and Jorge Orta is designed for Euro-pean minority. The pavilion focussed upon Roma as a global na-tion and centrates on the realities and specificity of ROma way of life and their everyday struggle to survive. With referencing of her pervious work’ Antarctic Village - Dome Dwelling’ (2007). It provided me a concept of combining Gypsies and Hmong together in order to promote ethnic harmony between na-tive and immigrate minorities.

‘Each dwelling is hand stitched by a traditional tent maker with sections of flags from countries around the world, along with extensions of clothes and gloves, symbolising the multiplicity and diversity of people. (Concept description from Studio Orta)

- I like the super oversized silhou-ette of this group of ROma. Thinking it would be interesting to be wear on normal size model.

DEVELOPEMNTSILHOUETTE

COLLAGE- a pirmary gathering of all my research photos, showing details, shapes and colours.

-From the 6 collages to making in real garments. All of them need to be make in a bigger size and add details later.

Collage line up with basic garment shape( first fitting)

The silver coins emboridery looked like a big sequin, It looks more modern if it could be replaced by different size of circle trimmings or sequins.

DETAILSZIG ZAG WITH COINS TRIMMINGS

Placing of the arrow se-quin pieces and thinking it could widly apply on different fashion items.

Flat ARROW POCKET

Arrow pocket could be used as a real pocket or a patch work section. And i like the heavy decorative style of pocket, it oculd be a focus point a gar-ment.

I am trying to project a messy feeling with diversification of texture. A mix-ture of glossy and matt, light and heavy. A layering of circle trimmings and tex-ture and creating the texture of hmong custume.
