Reading The teaching of reading is everybody’s business.
Over the last few years, our school community has been working together to support the
development of reading in every child. This will continue in 2019, as I believe that being an
effective reader is the key that opens learning in all other areas. While we as a school will
maintain our focus on the teaching of reading, this is not
something that we can do alone.
When a child is born, learning commences. A baby’s
brain starts to ‘fire’ and this is enhanced by a variety of
stimulus. By providing a colourful environment, using
correct oral and written language frequently and
demonstrating the importance of learning by providing
books, books and more books, you can help language
development.
I ask that all in our community (including parents, grand
parents, carers etc) join this journey to support reading
development and also to advocate why reading is
important. Always remember: Everybody reads at Logan Village!

Surf Awareness - Year 5
Year 5s are going to Tallebudgera SLSC to complete a day course aimed at
being safe in and around the water. Children learn how to use surf-skis,
learn basic CPR, rescuing with floats and swimming in the ocean safely. They
also learn some important life skills like reading the surf, identifying rips
and the importance of following life guard’s instructions.
Lockdown and Firedrills
Schools are required, under Workplace Health and Safety Policies, to have Lockdown and Fire Drills Procedures
in place in the case of a possible disaster situation requiring children to remain indoors. Such situations could
include accidents, toxic spills or emissions, unauthorised personnel on site or livestock running loose. Schools
are required to practice these procedures in preparation for such emergencies.
The signal for a lockdown is music played over the PA system throughout the
school. When the children hear this music they move to the nearest classroom and
remain there until receiving further instructions, the purpose of playing music is
twofold. It is calming for the children and easily distinguished from the fire drill
alarm.
The children will be debriefed and any arising issues discussed with class teachers.
If your child has any residual issues please feel free to contact the school on 5547 2222.
In line with our Lockdown Procedures, could we ask for your assistance in the following ways
o If you are in the school grounds when the lockdown signal is sounded, please move to the nearest
classroom and wait there until notified.
o If you happen to be entering the school grounds and you hear the Lockdown signal, please wait outside
the school gate until notified. Thank you for your assistance.

Music Notes Co - curricular music groups for 2019: JUNIOR CHOIR – YEARS 2 & 3, THURSDAYS 11AM (No cost but a folder is required)
POP CHOIR – YEARS 4 – 6, WEDNESDAYS 11AM (No cost but a folder is required)
BEGINNER UKULELE CLUB – YEARS 4 – 6, TUESDAYS 11AM (No cost but a folder is required)
ADVANCED TEAM UKULELE- YEARS 4 – 6, MONDAYS 11AM (No cost but a folder is required) Recap: information about the recorder for Year 3, 4 and 5 Parents: Sometimes people wonder or enquire why the recorder is the instrument of choice for primary classroom music. Below are some reasons why: The recorder has a similar tone to the human voice, so children can hear notes better when singing and then when playing. The recorder is cheap and therefore is affordable for all families (approximately $10). They are not easily breakable and don’t require large areas to store them. Recorders are easy to learn and lend themselves well to large group tuition. They are light and don’t require a specialised embouchure, making them a fantastic starting instrument for other woodwind instruments. The left hand is placed at the top of the recorder and thus has a similar hold and similar fingerings to other instruments. This especially allows a good progression into the instrumental program’s woodwind instruments (flute and saxophone). There are lots of pedagogical materials existing for recorder. It is good for fine motor development. There are many different sizes available and thus consorts and ensembles can be formed. If purchasing a recorder for your child in Year 3 or above, Yamaha recorders are the best brand.
Music Polo Shirt
Music polo shirts are available in the Uniform Shop. Students
that are in the instrumental program (Strings and Band) or those
that play ukulele or are in Junior Choir or Pop Choir are invited
to purchase a shirt. They are $38 each and are of a lovely
design. The kids love wearing them on rehearsal days and for
performances.
At the moment there are only sizes 12 and 14, however in a
couple of weeks there will be all sizes available from 6 - 12. Be
sure to get in quick to avoid disappointment. The Uniform Shop
is next to the tuckshop and manned by Michelle Wilkie on
Tuesdays 8am to 9.30am.
Any questions please don’t hesitate to contact Mrs Ram, Mrs
Gordon or Miss Wu.

Prep Year Level Transition Statements
We are currently collecting Transition Statements. Transition Statements are written for any
child who attended Kindergarten in 2018. While it is not compulsory to provide this to the
school, it does provide your child’s teacher with valuable information on your child’s learning
and development. If you are happy to share this with the school but have not done so yet, please
pass it on at your nearest convenience.
‘Parents approaching children in the school grounds’
Parents, the Logan Village Responsible Behaviour Plan defines the responsibilities that all
members of the school community are expected to uphold. It is
important that we all recognise our shared responsibility for the safety
and wellbeing of students in our school grounds.
If you see a situation happening that concerns you or you feel a
student may be at risk of being hurt, please remember to find a staff
member that can help you. It is not appropriate for parents or carers to
approach other peoples’ children. Staff should always manage those
situations.
